Sightseeing Highlights of Melbourne

Although Sydney might be Australia’s most recognizable city, Melbourne is a popular destination both for locals and tourists. Famed for being a multicultural city with a high proportion of immigrants, as well as being known for less than perfect weather with “four seasons in one day”, Melbourne is the place to go for dining, shopping and meeting all kinds of people, but there are also some great tourist attractions, including:

  • Federation Square, the sometimes controversial modern architecture opposite Flinders Street station, where exhibitions or festivals are often held.
  • The Fitzroy Gardens, close to the city center, where you can stroll through the beautiful National Trust-listed gardens.
  • Get on top of Melbourne by visiting the 55th floor of the Rialto building and enjoying the view from the Melbourne 360 observation deck.
  • The Melbourne Aquarium located on the river is full of local and other sea creatures.
  • The National Gallery of Victoria has ever-changing exhibits of art from all over the globe.
  • A cruise on the Yarra River to see Melbourne from the water.
  • A tram trip to the beachside suburb of St Kilda, which could include a vist to Luna Park.

Alternatively, you can take a day trip out of Melbourne to enjoy the Great Ocean Road or to see the Penguin Parade at Phillip Island, too.
