Does American Airlines Charge for Luggage?

Out of all the airlines, American charges the most fees when it comes to checking luggage. This is becoming more and more common among all airlines, but American is above and beyond the competition in most areas. That being said, these increased fees are allowing the company to increase revenue.

Traveling American on a domestic economy class ticket will result in a charge of $15 each way for your first checked bag. For your second bag, the fee is $25. For bags three, four and five, the fee increases to $100 per piece. For bags six and above, the fee is $200 per piece. As you can see, if you are flying and need to take a lot of luggage with you, the fees can and will begin to mount.

Bags that exceed 62 inches will be assessed a fee of $150 per piece. Those larger than 115 inches cannot be checked. Size is calculated by adding the length, width, and height.

They also charge for overweight bags. Luggage weighing between 50 and 70 pounds are hit with a fee of $50. Bags between 70 and 100 pounds are charged a fee of $100. Anything heavier is not permitted to be checked. If you need to carry more than 100 pounds, call American in advance to discuss your options.

American does charge for luggage, and at this time their fees are higher than any others in the airline industry.
