There are a few destinations in the United States that as such must see locations that almost everyone decides to visit at least once in their lives. Orlando is one of those cities that is just so full of fun and excitement it’s a place that needs to be experienced to be believed.

If you’re looking to pack a variety of adventures and excitement into a weekend getaway in Orlando then you’ve come to the right place. We’ll provide you with a number of exciting activities in Orlando and you can pick and choose to create the best weekend getaway in Orlando ever.

Major Attractions and Theme Parks

Of course Orlando Florida is probably most noted for its incredible theme parks and major attractions, Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando, are probably the two biggest theme parks in Orlando and the ones most people think of when they want to plan a trip to the area. Walt Disney World is the largest and most visited recreational resort in the entire world with four theme parks, two water parks and 24 themed hotels. Disney’s four theme parks include Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, each of which is a huge destination in its own right. In addition Disney’s hold on the Orlando area, Universal Studios Orlando also has its share of attractions for visitors as it’s the second largest resort in the Orlando region, only behind Walt Disney World Resort. Universal Orlando is a theme park that is jointly owned by NBC Universal and Blackstone Group, so the attractions in the park are based on NBC television shows and movies produced by the Blackstone Group. The real attraction in the park, in addition to the movie memorabilia and sets are the rides. Elaborate rides are designed around the themes of popular movies and they change frequently enough to keep things exciting.

Golf in Orlando

While many people think of Orlando as a mess of theme parks they’re missing some of the most exciting things the city has to offer and one of those things is golf. Florida is a great state for golf and the Orlando area, with its large tourism trade, is fortunate enough to have a huge number of private and public golf courses for people to explore. Golf packages can be arranged that allow you to visit a number of courses during your stay, or you can stay at one of the beautiful golf resorts in Orlando and play a high end course again and again. But if you really want to experience Florida golf and not break your budget then the public golf courses are the way to go with their well kept and reasonably prices courses.

A Natural Look at Orlando

Getting out of the rat (or mouse as the case may be) race is almost essential in Orlando. The city is crowded and such an overload to the senses that communing with nature on your Orlando weekend getaway is almost essential. Luckily Orlando has almost as many parks as it does roller coasters, each park offers a different experience for its guests. Orlando’s park system features parks that are small and quaint offering a momentary escape for a stroll or a picnic or they can be elaborate like the 4,000 acre Lake Louisa State Park with four different lakes, horseback riding, and camping. To experience the natural flora and fauna of the region Lake Louisa is a good place to start. Rock Springs Run State Reserve is also a great stop as the black bears don’t hide from strangers. Blue Spring State Park is a refuge for endangered species namely the manatee. Blue Spring is also a wonderful place for swimming, snorkeling, SCUBA diving and camping.

Cultural Tourism in Orlando

Orlando actually has some cultural highlights that give you a different perspective of this vibrant city. The Orlando Museum of Art is a great place to start your cultural tour with its focus on local artwork. The 10-12 on site exhibits are always changing and often supplemented by presentations, lectures, and outreach programs that provide more background about the pieces of art or the artistic movement under inspection. The Orlando Repertory Theatre specializes in family programming that everyone can enjoy. There are even camps for young ones who want to learn a little about the business of theater. For music fans the Orlando music scene is always happening. There are a huge number of clubs featuring top acts, in fact it is possible to find a top national act every week. But for music with a little more of a cultural bent, the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre is the place to check out. The Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre brings in some of the top Broadway touring companies and performers. It also is home for the Orlando Ballet, Orlando Opera, Orlando Philharmonic and the Festival of Orchestras.

Orlando Shopping

A town that is based on tourism, like Orlando is, often has shopping that is to die for. Orlando is an incredible shopping destination with high end shopping, traditional shopping malls and outlet shopping. For those who love outlet shopping there are about a dozen outlet malls in and around Orlando, it’s almost hard to miss them. For something a little more high end the Mall at Millenia is a great place to shop, beginning with the valet parking and carrying through the incredibly built mall you’ll find it a unique high end shopping experience that’s everything you could imagine and more. But for the ultimate in Orlando shopping that’s all packed into one location you’ll want to go to International Drive. This shopping strip has everything from designer boutiques to outlet malls, but everything is supposed to be priced reasonably. There are almost 500 stores on International Drive covering just about every item you can buy.

There is so much to do during a weekend getaway in Orlando that you couldn’t even fit it all in in a year of weekends, but if you’re found the time to escape to Orlando for just one weekend you’ll get the most bang for your buck by engulfing yourselves in your favorite activities or by sampling a little bit of everything.

San Francisco is one of those incredible destinations that is loaded with activities for a variety of interests, activity levels and personality types. This is why it’s a perfect city to escape to for a weekend. You can pick and choose and fill a weekend with one specific activity that you love, or you can mix and match activities and taste a little bit of everything that San Francisco has to offer.

Alcatraz Island

San Francisco is known the world over for a few of its historic landmarks, Alcatraz Island is one of those famed locations. Originally home to the first lighthouse and U.S. fort on the west coast it gained its notoriety for the notorious men who lived on the island. Alcatraz served as home to some of the most famous and infamous criminals in U.S. history. Affectionately known as The Rock, it was first transformed into a prison during its service as a military base, Civil War prisoners were held on the island and then Spanish-American war prisoners also served time on Alcatraz. During the 1906 earthquake civilian prisoners were transferred for their protection and soon the prison expanded. Some of the more noted inmates were Al Capone, the noted Birdman of Alcatraz, James “Whitey” Bulger and Alvin Karpis. In addition to the prison tours you can learn about Indians of All Tribes who twice “liberated” the island in an effort to establish tribal rights in the United States. But beyond all of the struggle and terror on the island there is an incredible beauty to this island with the natural rock gardens, tide pools and the bird colonies.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is another one of those noted landmarks. Known as one of the most beautiful suspension bridges in the world, the Golden Gate Bridge spans the opening of the San Francisco Bay onto the Pacific Ocean. The 1.7 miles draw an estimated 9 million people annually and visitors can either drive, bike, or walk across the famed span. Construction on the bridge began in 1933 under the supervision of Joseph Strauss. Strauss had been working on the bridge, at least conceptually, since 1916. The bridge was finished in 1937 with an opening ceremony that lasted for an entire week. On an entirely different note, the Golden Gate Bridge is the most popular place to commit suicide in the United States and one of the most popular in the world. No accurate number of suicides is reported as many of these events aren’t witnessed but it 2005 it was estimated that there was one suicide or attempt every two weeks.

Aquarium of the Bay

The Bridge is not the only way to enjoy the bay and it should really take center stage during your weekend in San Francisco. The Aquarium of the Bay is a wonderful way to learn more about the bay and the life within it. It is a 65,000 square foot facility with acrylic tunnels that wind through 700,000 gallons of Bay water. Visitors get to experience more than 20,000 aquatic animals including sharks, bat rays, skates, octopus, jelly fish and many more. The Aquarium of the Bay is organized into three different environments, Discover the Bay, Under the Bay and Touch the Bay. At Discover the Bay you are introduced to the environment and the marine life that is most prevalent in the region. Under the Bay takes you beneath the bay to a unique view of life above the tunnels. Touch the Bay is an interactive lab with local and exotic land animals.

Boats at Fisherman

Fisherman’s Wharf

Another way to take in the beautiful coastline is by visiting Fisherman’s Wharf. Fisherman’s Wharf is one of the most popular tourist attractions in San Francisco and Pier 39 is probably its most popular destination. But the wharf is a lot more than just a wharf, it features a number of exciting attractions including Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum, the Musee Mecanique, the Wax Museum at Fisherman’s Wharf, Forbes Island and a number of stores, restaurants and excitement for everyone. A streetcar runs through the area and two of the cable cars run close so you can combine this visit with a trip to the cable car barn. No matter what you do, make sure you stop to have some fresh seafood at the wharf, it’s some of the best in the world because it’s so remarkably fresh.

Cable Car Barn

Think of San Francisco and images of cable cars winding up and down steep grades comes to mind. Taking a ride on a cable car is almost a must when visiting San Francisco but you can take the experience to another level and learn more about San Francisco’s cable cars with a visit to the Cable Car Barn. The first cable car started in 1873 and rose in popularity until 1892 when the first electric streetcars started running. The earthquake of 1906 contributed to the downfall of the cable car and by 1944 only two lines existed. A few groups worked to restore and maintain the remaining lines and by 1984 several lines were running and restored. Now the cable cars serve mainly as a tourist experiences but some locals still use them in their regular commute. The Cable Car Barn lets you view an actual cable winding and watch the path as it enters the building and leaves underneath the street. The museum houses many great artifacts, including the first cable car from 1873.

San Francisco Dining

San Francisco is pretty well known for its historic and natural attractions but the city has also garnered quite a reputation for its food as well. Way beyond Rice-a-Roni, the city has truly become a foodie destination with incredible food at almost every turn. From a fresh-from-the-sea simple fish sandwich or a bowl of chowder at a food stand to a five star Michelin rated restaurant, it can all be found in San Francisco. No matter what you have a hankering for you will find it in spades in San Francisco.

Chicago is an excellent destination if you’re looking for a weekend getaway. It is the third largest city in the United States and packed with so many exciting activities and adventures that there is something for everyone.

The city of Chicago was originally settled by a Native American tribe called the Potawatomis. The tribe found the region to be very useful due to its proximity to the water. Trading posts were established in the area and eventually a military post was setup. The Native American tribes were eventually forced off of their land and in 1833 the town of Chicago was established with a population of about 200.

The site quickly grew in population and acreage and was noted as an important hub for transportation of a number of varieties. Chicago become so popular that it was chosen to host the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893 and with more than 27 million visitors it is still considered the most influential world’s fair in history. Most of the buildings from the expo have since disappeared but a few of them remain and are an interesting highlight for anyone planning a visit to Chicago.

Sightseeing by Boat in Chicago

Which brings us to event that any weekend getaway to Chicago should include, sightseeing. There are a couple of unique and interesting ways to explore the city of Chicago and the Shoreline Architecture Cruise is one of the favorites. This cruise takes you around the city by boat with well educated tour guides providing insight on all of the architectural highlights of the city. Another waterside tour is the Tall Ship Windy, this a48 foot four masted gaff topsail schooner takes off from navy pier and offers a variety of themed ship experiences that can teach you more about the city, the environment, or even yourself if you’re willing to give it a shot.

Cultural Aspects of Chicago

Chicago has a thriving arts and education environment and there are a number of noted stops that anyone looking for some cultural stimulation should visit. The Shedd Aquarium opened in 1930 and was the largest indoor aquarium in the world at the time. Although Shedd has lost that title it still offers a very impressive display to visitors including more than 1500 species of fish, marine mammals, birds, snakes, amphibians and insects. Within walking distance of the Shedd Aquarium is the Adler Planetarium the oldest planetarium in existence today. The attractions in the planetarium are interesting to all but real astronomy buffs will love their incredibly important collection of antique instruments. If you have room for one more museum the Field Museum of Natural History is a must. The Field got its start during that 1893 world’s fair when it was called the Columbian Museum of Chicago. In 1905 the museum’s name was changed and over the years the museum has amassed one of the finest natural history collections in the world which includes Sue, the most complete Tyrannosaurus in existence. If you’re leaning toward the arts then there are a huge variety of options to choose from but one that must not be missed is the Museum of Contemporary Art. With its impressive permanent collection of known masters and its ever changing list of traveling exhibits, there is always something to inspire and excite. On the other end of the spectrum the Chicago Theatre features some of the top names in music, entertainment, comedy and theatre productions. But music buffs know the best culture in Chicago are the Chicago blues. This particular form of the blues developed in this city as blues musicians took basic music and added electric guitars, drums, pianos and sometimes a saxophone, even boosting the sound of the harmonica with a microphone and an amplifier. Throughout the city you’ll find incredible jazz clubs offering a variety of performers from world known masters to undiscovered musical geniuses.

Chicago Parks

A weekend getaway in Chicago can be quite overwhelming as there is just so much to see and do, so take a moment or two to explore some of the city’s exciting parks. They can be the perfect respite for a quiet picnic or you can find yourself swept up in the excitement and spending a whole day at the park. Probably Chicago’s most famous park area is Navy Pier, an old municipal pier that has grown up and is now packed with things to do for everyone. You can catch a variety of programs at Navy Pier, see movies at the IMAX, ride the Ferris wheel, visit the Chicago Children’s Museum or the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows, shop, eat out, or just people watch until the fireworks begin. Striving to become the number one park destination in the city, Millennium Park grew up out of the railroad property in downtown Chicago. Initially a 1998 idea for a park with a venue for outdoor music performances and large scale sculptures, Millennium Park has turned into a cultural icon with its magnificent Jay Pritzker Pavilion, the interactive Crown Fountain, and Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate sculpture. The Lurie Garden is also a magnificent site that draws visitors to the beauty of the Midwest. Although the idea began in 1998, the park wasn’t not open to the public until July 2004 and has since been visited by millions. But one park that has seared itself into American history recently is Grant Park, known as the front yard of Chicago, this park was host to President Barack Obama’s Election Night Party and was seen the world over as people flocked to the park to celebrate this Illinois Senator’s rise to the highest office in the country.

Shopping in Chicago

Chicago is known for its world class shopping and although there are many places to shop in and around the city, the Magnificent Mile is simply a shopper’s paradise. This shopping stretch is about a mile long and reaches from Oak Street to the Chicago River on North Michigan Avenue and is literally filled with shopping options. Wear your most comfortable dress shoes because you’ll want to look amazing yet you’ll be putting in quite a few miles. The stores range from high end boutiques to The Gap filling in every imaginable space in between. Don’t limit your shopping to what is visible from the street as there are a ton of malls and stores tucked inside of the store fronts and hotels along the way.

Believe it or not, we’ve just scratched the surface of all that Chicago has to offer for the weekend getaway visitor. Chicago is a city that can be visited again and again and you still will never experience everything this fabulous city has to offer.

Escape from the rat race with a weekend getaway to Denver that you’ll never forget. The mile high city in Colorado has a number of exciting adventures just waiting to be discovered. With Denver International Airport right there a quick flight is so convenient that a weekend getaway is easy to arrange.

Snowy Fun

For those who ski Colorado is one of the ultimate destinations as the state is known for its world class ski resorts. Just a short drive from the city of Denver are Loveland, Eldora, and Winter Park, all incredible ski destinations, perfect for a weekend escape to Denver. But for those people who aren’t into the thrills and sometime spills of skiing there are a number of other winter activities available in Denver for everyone to enjoy. Try your hand at cross country skiing or snowshoeing and explore Mother Nature’s beautiful canvas. Rent a snowmobile and opt for excitement over exercise as you whiz through the mountains. For those seeking a bit of romance during their weekend trip to Denver a sleigh ride or ice skating always warms the heart. For families a more exciting or unusual adventure like sledding, tubing or even dog sledding can help create a treasured memory. And if the cold doesn’t bother you then you may want to try your hand at ice fishing or ice climbing. There are so many cool winter activities to enjoy in the Denver area that it’s almost impossible to pack them all into one weekend getaway.

Sports Fans

For those people who love sports but would rather watch them than participate Denver has four professional sports teams that can keep your yen for sports satiated. The Denver Broncos are the region’s professional football team. The Broncos play at Mile High Stadium which is now known as Invesco Field at Mile High. The stadium is known for its sell out games so if you’d like to catch a game then you’ll want to get your tickets in advance of your weekend getaway to Denver. The Denver Nuggets are the local professional basketball team and their home games are played at Pepsi Center. The Pepsi Center is also home to the Denver Avalanche the area’s ice hockey team. And for baseball fans, the Colorado Rockies bring their brand of excitement to Coors Field.

Museums and Art

For a change of pace, Denver offers a significant number of cultural activities for visitors and locals alike. The Denver Art Museum is most known for its collection of American Indian artwork but the rest of the museum is equally impressive with more than 68,000 works of art to enlighten, entertain and inspire visitors. The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is the area’s leading resource for informal science education, their huge variety of exhibitions, programs and activities bring science to life. If you’re interested specifically in regional history then the Colorado Historical Society is a wonderful place go visit and learn about the colorful history that makes Denver what it is today. Aviation fans will love Wings over the Rockies Air & Space Museum who is honoring noted celebrity and pilot Harrison Ford in November 2009 and capping the celebration with a tribute to aviation in the movies. Denver also has a couple of unique museums that are particularly interesting, the Denver Firefighters Museum is one of those destinations with its focus on local heroes and interactive exhibits. Another museum that you won’t find anywhere is the Molly Brown House Museum, known for her puckish nature and the fact that she survived the Titanic, Molly Brown has become somewhat of an American icon. Molly Brown’s old home was saved from destruction and lovingly restored and transformed into a museum that accurately depicts life as it was during her stay there.

Weekend with the Kids

If you’re planning a weekend getaway to Denver with your family then there are a great number of things you can do together that everyone will enjoy. The outdoor activities in Denver are world class, especially during the winter months with skating, skiing, sledding, and snowboarding like nowhere else in the United States. The Denver Children’s Museum is a great stop for families with younger children. The museum is dedicated to children up through age eight and their adult companions. The museum brings dynamic hands on exhibits to life to encourage interest in the large and small aspects of the world around them. For animal lovers there are a number of options in Denver, the Denver Zoo is one of the most popular ones in the country and the Downtown Aquarium Denver is newly renovated to feature more “natural” habitats and hands on activities. For a different look at nature the Denver Botanic Gardens are an inspiration for a number of reasons. This garden was originally the dream of local gardeners who wanted to keep part of their booming city in a natural state. Today the Denver Botanic Gardens has expanded to three different sites, the Denver Botanic Gardens, the Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield and Mount goliath, each one celebrates the varied ecosystems of the state of Colorado.

Shopping, Dining, Entertainment

Finally, one area that every visitor to Denver should explore is the 16th Street Mall. Not your traditional mall by any sense of the word, the 16th Street Mall is an entire street that stretches for 16 blocks full of shops, restaurants and entertainment options. This is the perfect place to wander about if you have some free time you’d like to fill as there is always something interesting going on and a delectable restaurant to tempt your taste buds. It’s also the perfect place to stop for that souvenir from your visit to Denver. You’ll find the typical junky tourist shop with Davy Crockett coonskin hats and authentic replicas of Native American artifacts, but there are also a handful of quality stores featuring local artists and craftsmen with stunning products you can’t find anywhere else.

Dallas is a fascinating city that is just full of different activities that appeal to each person in individual ways. This city is bustling with activity and makes you a firm believer in the motto of Dallas “Live Large. Think Big”. This city that is based on big dreams knows how to show its visitors a good time, not matter what their interests.

If you’re looking for a weekend escape then give Dallas a try. You’ll find that you can plan an entire weekend around one of your favorite activities or you can mix and match and pick and choose from the suggestions below to create a weekend that you’ll never forget. In fact, you may find you enjoyed it so much that you’ll want to come back again and again to catch a few of the activities that you missed the first time around.

Live Entertainment

Live entertainment abounds in Dallas. There is a constantly changing schedule of headline performers in a number of realms that provide ample entertainment, but in addition to the touring headliners there are a number of ongoing live entertainment alternatives to keep you entertained. Ad Libs is a local improve comedy troupe that has been performing its particular brand of humor in the Dallas region for more than two decades. Dallas Dines Out lists a number of popular Dallas and Dallas area dining establishments that feature live music while you eat. Take your pick and enjoy your favorite food with music to match. The Deep Ellum district of Dallas is a renovated old warehouse district and is known for its constantly hip, happening and changing club and music scene. This is the place to go for regular excitement and to be on the cutting edge of Dallas’s night scene.

Museums

For people looking for more of a cultural experience then the museums of Dallas provide that and so much more. The first museum that any visitor to Dallas should visit is The Sixth Floor Museum. The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza is where Lee Harvey Oswald was when he shot (or shot at, depending on your opinion) President John F. Kennedy. The floor is now a museum dedicated to the president and provides a deeper understanding of the man as well as his assassination. The Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas lets visitors explore geology, natural history, space, the human body and so much more. The Dallas Museum of Art will satiate your need for an artistic touch with more than 23,000 works of art from around the world from ancient to modern times.

Family Fun

If you’re headed out on a Dallas weekend getaway with your entire family then you might want to visit the Dallas World Aquarium and Zoological Garden. The Dallas World Aquarium and Zoological Garden once was an empty warehouse but was purchased and converted into a state of the art aquarium. The aquarium was such a success that other warehouses have been purchased and the facilities expanded. The Dallas Zoo covers 95 acres and is open to the public every day except Christmas. Founded in 1888 the zoo features 406 species and about 1,800 animals. For something full of adrenaline and low on educational value then Adventure Landing is a perfect place for the whole family with mini golf, go-karting, video games, batting cages, laser tag and a restaurant.

Sports Fun

For the sports fanatics out there Dallas is a hotbed of sporting activities. Dallas is the only metro area in the southwest to host teams from five major professional sports leagues. The Dallas Cowboys are the area’s contribution to the National Football League and if the Dallas Cowboys aren’t exciting enough for you then the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders sure will be. The Dallas Mavericks were founded in 1980 and since have become one of the National Basketball Association’s most exciting franchises. For Major League Baseball fans the Texas Rangers promise to put on a thrilling game. Hockey fans will appreciate the Dallas Stars, champions of the 1999 Stanley Cup, who knows they may have a comeback. Once known as the Dallas Burn, the current FC Dallas is the region’s only Major League Soccer franchise. And if that isn’t enough you can always check out the Texas Motor Speedway for race activity, the Mesquite Championship Rodeo for some good old fashioned Texas fun, if it’s the right time of year you can catch the HP Byron Nelson Championship and see some of golf’s finest or check out the most successful sports franchise in women’s football with the Dallas Diamonds.

Shopping

Dallas is somewhat of a shopping Mecca for those who are in the know. One of the most popular sites to shop in Dallas is the Galleria Dallas where it might not be what you shop for so much as who you see while shopping. This is the spot where a large number of celebrities have been seen spending their (not so hard earned) money. And the indoor ice rink at the Galleria Dallas has attracted some of the top names in figure skating. For a unique shopping experience then the Bishop Arts District is the place to go. This old warehouse district (notice that Dallas has a lot of those) was converted and revitalized into a wonderful little shopping center with independently owned shops with eclectic little trinkets and stunning clothing that you can’t find anywhere else. And for another interesting experience, hop at trolley to Uptown Dallas for some of the best antique and specialty store shopping around. There are also a number of great restaurants so schedule your trip around a meal and take time to explore.

To get the most out of your weekend getaway to Dallas try exploring a little bit of this and a little bit of that and enjoying a lot of the local cuisine. You’ll be delighted with the outcome and will definitely find experiences that you want to come back and enjoy again and again. Remember, Live Large. Think Big.

There is just something about the city of New Orleans that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. With traditions from around the globe come together to meld into a very unique style that’s all New Orleans it’s an experience not to be forgotten. If you’re lucky enough to head to New Orleans for a weekend getaway there are some things you just have to do.

Mardi Gras

Now not every New Orleans weekend getaway will coincide with Mardi Gras as it happens only once a year, but it’s amazing how many people do plan their vacations so they can experience this fabulous event. The first modern day Mardi Gras happened in 1857 as a celebration the city put on for itself, but its history in America may reach back as far as 1699. The event also has some religious significance and is recognized by the Catholic Church as a festival before the Lent season. Non-profit clubs or krewes host their own celebrations of the party with some featuring parades and others holding masquerade balls. The schedule of parades and parties and excitement stretches for weeks, its length changes every year, so it’s best to check before you plan your party.

Jazz Music

New Orleans is just about as famous for its jazz music as it is for its Mardi Gras. Jazz music’s roots burst forth out of New Orleans and the city has served as home to some of the most famous musicians America has to offer from Louis Armstrong to Lenny Kravitz. If you’re visiting New Orleans there are a number of music festivals throughout the year which give you a chance to explore the local music scene, or you can stop in one of the many, many clubs to listen to the local jazz.

New Orleans Dining

The dining scene in New Orleans has exploded in the past decade turning the city into one of the top dining destinations in the United States. Some of the best known and noted chefs in the country own and operate restaurants in New Orleans. The local Times-Picayune carefully selects the 10 top restaurants each year and in 2009 their list includes: Commander’s Palace, Emeril’s Delmonico, Galatoire’s, Gautreau’s, Herbsaint, Lilette, Restaurant August, Ristorante del Porto, and Stella! Be sure to take advantage of as much of the delightful and regionally inspired cuisine as you can, it’s truly extraordinary.

The French Quarter

The French Quarter in New Orleans is an extremely popular tourist attraction but it’s one of those places that the locals frequent regularly as well. This neighborhood is the oldest in the city and probably the best known as well. The entire district has been declared a National Historic Landmark and features a number of historic buildings. Most of the architecture reflects the Spanish style which was popular in 1794 when the old buildings were destroyed by fire and new ones rebuilt. In addition to the notable architecture there are many attractions that should also be viewed if you get a chance including Jackson Square and Bourbon Street.

Magazine Street

No weekend getaway is complete without a little shopping, whether you’re looking for souvenirs for others or a special something that you can only find in your vacation. In New Orleans the shopping Mecca is Magazine Street with its local character and loads of charm. There is a little bit of everything from unusual local stores to brand name stores you’re familiar with. The combination of stores gives it a bustling feel that isn’t entirely touristy nor is it all local. Better than a shopping mall any day of the week.

Cities of the Dead

The above ground tombs the litter the cemeteries of New Orleans are referred to as the Cities of the Dead. These incredible and creepy tributes to the dead are one of the most popular stops for tourists to New Orleans. The tombs have their resting place above ground because the water table is so high. You’ll hit water after digging just a few feet into the earth and caskets that are buried underground float and eventually rise to the surface. The tradition of burying the dead above ground is another Spanish custom that was brought to New Orleans and seems to have solved the problem of coffins coming out of the ground. But the few cemeteries that allow burials underground still have a random coffin come to the surface after a heavy rain. There are 42 cemeteries in the city and each one seems to have its own highlights and stories. There are also several different tour companies that offer guided tours through the confusing maze of tombs and point out the highlights.

Art and Culture

In addition to the partying, the food, the jazz music and the dead New Orleans has a lot of art and culture to offer as well. There are world class museums including some Smithsonian affiliates, The National World War II Museum and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art for people looking for a traditional museum experience but there are also a large number of art studios and galleries that feature works of art by local artists.

Outdoors New Orleans

For those who are inclined for the outdoors then New Orleans still has a lot to offer. There are golf courses, fishing, river boats and swamp tours or you can explore the animals of the region at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, Audubon Insectarium, and Audubon Zoo. You can take as much or as little of it as you wish and feed it into your New Orleans weekend itinerary.

It may be impossible to accomplish everything you’d like to during your weekend getaway in New Orleans but getting a little taste of the highlights is a wonderful way to pack an entire New Orleans experience into one weekend getaway and leave you feeling as though you really got to sample the city.

Miami is one of those cities that is perfect for a weekend getaway, in fact it’s a noted hotspot for celebrities looking for a quick mini vacation from the world. Miami has so much to offer that you can cater to almost every personality and interest. The best way to experience Miami is to take in a little bit of everything the city has to offer.

Miami Beaches

Miami is known for its beaches, one in particular. And any visit to Miami doesn’t feel complete without a trip to the ocean. South Beach is the most noted beach and draws the greatest crowds. It’s the place where people go to see and be seen. And you may see more than you bargained for as topless sunbathing is not uncommon. South beach is convenient to get to and within walking distance to a number of wonderful cafés and restaurants that feature outdoor seating so you can people watch while dining. The other beaches in Miami don’t draw quite the crowds that South Beach does, which has its appeal as well. Miami beaches have it all, whether you’re looking for a place to sun yourself, explore native habitat, windsurf or even camp.

Miami Art

Miami has a thriving art community and there is no shortage of art galleries, museums and events to explore. Although the visual arts may be your first instinct, and there are a number of places to explore the visual and traditional art of the region there are other art forms which attract a crowd and inspire many. The music scene in Miami is thriving and diverse with strong gospel roots, a noted Latin beat and incredible club music. The performing arts make a strong appearance on the local scene with a handful of local performing arts arenas with everything from traditional Shakespeare to interpretive dance. One art form that often gets overlooked but is key to Miami’s personality is the architecture which is mainly art deco in style. But if you’re really interested in architecture the Wolfsonian Museum houses the John and Drew Eberson Architectural Records Archive which is an incredible dive into their work from 1909 through 1988.

Miami Museums

Speaking of museums, Miami has a number of museums and one for just about every subject. For families the Children’s Museum is exciting and always changing so that kids can play and learn at the same time. The Miami Museum of Science and Planetarium with more than 60,000 artifacts and a fantastic planetarium. The Lowe Art Museum with an interesting scope of multicultural exhibitions and special events to open your awareness of the artistic world. In addition to these traditional museums Miami has many special interest museums that you won’t find anywhere else, like the American Police Hall of Fame, the Jewish Museum of Florida and the Wolfsonian with its focus on architecture and interior design.

Naturally Miami

Miami has a unique environment with the everglades, the ocean and its beaches and the incredible wildlife. The Everglades National Park is a wonderful way to explore the natural environment of Florida. The Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the entire United States and is home to many rare and endangered species. Keep your eyes peeled and you’re sure to see an alligator in its natural habitat. For something a little less wild and more controlled, Miami Seaquarium might be the way to experience a little bit of wildlife. This 38 acre tropical paradise is an exciting place to learn more about the sea life around you and enjoy a little entertainment as well. The Miami Zoo is another way to explore the wildlife of the world, it’s Florida’s oldest and largest zoological garden.

Historical Miami

Miami is actually a fairly young city as the everglades made it pretty inhospitable until modern building and conveniences turned it into the vacation hotspot that it is today. But that’s not to say that the city doesn’t have its own history that will appeal to history buffs. One of the most beautiful and interesting historical spots in Miami is the Ancient Spanish Monastery. This Ancient Spanish Monastery is actually the Monastery of St. Bernard de Clairvaux from Sacramenia in Sergovia Spain. This 1133-1144 monastery was seized and sold to William Randolph Hearst who had it dismantled stone by stone and shipped to Miami. Unfortunately the structure wasn’t rebuilt until the 1950s and wasn’t restored in exactly the right manner. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places the Venetian Pool was created in the 1920s. Fed by underground artesian wells the pool is the largest freshwater pool in the U.S. and is surrounded by vine covered loggias, shady porticos, observation toward and waterfalls. And the Historical Museum of Southern Florida is a must to learn about the history of south Florida and the Caribbean.

Miami for Lovers

And what trip to a tropical destination is complete without a little romance. Miami is known for its cruises and a one day cruise to the Bahamas is an incredible way to spend the day with your loved one. In addition to getting to explore the Bahamas you get all of the amenities of the cruise ship without having to spend most of your vacation locked aboard a ship. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is also a wonderful place to visit for hand in hand walks through this fairytale garden. For fun in the sun and ocean together any of Miami’s beaches can serve up the romance you’re looking for. But for the ultimate in Florida romance you have to take a little trip to Homestead Florida’s Coral Castle, an incredibly romantic structure and garden. This beautiful valentine was created by Ed Leedskalnin over the course of 28 years in honor of the love of his life who left him the day before they were to be wed. And to cap off the night, visit one of the romantic restaurants in Miami for a candlelit dinner for two.

Few cities have as much to offer as New York City. This city is known the world over for everything it has to offer and you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to escape for a weekend getaway.

New York City Theater Getaway

You can’t mention visiting New York City without bringing up the theater action. There may be no other city in the world that has the quantity and quality theater productions that New York City has. If you are interested in the theater and want to plan a getaway that centers around Broadway your best bet is to select one or two Broadway shows you’d really like to see. If possible, book those shows as soon as possible as some of them sell out months, if not years, in advance. Then fill your days and off nights with surprise theater productions. Look for the TKTS booths set up in and around the Broadway region to get a killer deal on plays that aren’t sold out. Most of the booths sell tickets only on the day of the play but the discounts can go as deep as 50% off. Keep your mind open and see a couple theater productions you normally wouldn’t pick, you’ll never be disappointed in New York City.

New York City Historical Getaway

Although not officially dubbed New York City until 1664 the area’s history reaches much further back. But it really doesn’t matter if you’re interest in ancient history, the history of the city’s birth and growth, or more recent history, New York City is full of historical monuments and locations for all sorts of history buffs. Ellis Island is a must stop for any history buff on their trip to New York City. From 1892 to 1954 served as the main entry point for immigrants coming to the United States, for many people this location offers a connection to their ancestors. The Statue of Liberty is another stop that most tourists and history fans make, donated by the people of France as a sign of friendship, freedom and democracy its an impressive piece of artwork and a national monument. A Harlem Heritage Tour is a more modern touch with a guide that gives you a deeper insight on this famed neighborhood and its role in the Civil Rights Movement. A more modern place of great historical significance is the World Trade Center. Currently a haunting construction site, this once stately symbol of prosperity served as the site of one of the most devastating acts of terrorism ever. These are just a few of the historical getaways in New York City, one weekend is not nearly enough time to take in all of the history this city has to offer.

New York City Museum Getaway

The list of New York City Museums is so extensive it reaches from the traditional art museum to the non-traditional museum of sex. There is really something for everyone when it comes to New York City museums but there are a couple museums that garner a bit more attention than the others. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a perennial favorite with more than 2 million pieces of art on display. The Guggenheim museum is another favorite art museum, with a building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright the structure is almost as famous as the artwork inside. The American Museum of Natural History takes you out of the art world and into one of the largest and most celebrated museums of the world. Featured in a large number of media works, the museum is probably best known for its starring role in Night at the Museum. For a museum that is a bit of history itself, the Fraunces Tavern Museum is a great visit. This 1719 residence served as a home and tavern and was most famously known as the site where Washington gave his farewell address to the officers of the Continental army in 1783.

New York City Romantic Getaway

If you’re headed to New York City with a loved one then you’ll want to give your getaway a touch of romance or soak up all the hearts and flowers the city has to offer. New York City’s Central Park has a lot to offer the couple in love, wander around the zoo, grab a bit to eat at Tavern on the Green, rowboat across the lake, find an outdoor theater production or just stroll hand in hand through the park. Broadway is also a fabulous place to take your sweetheart, you can take in one of the many Broadway Theater productions, stop in for a meal at one of the great restaurants in the region or spend some time shopping at the world famous stores that line the streets of New York City. Touch your loved one’s heart by tracing their family tree back to Ellis Island. Visit an icon and see the Statue of Liberty or spend time exploring the city’s famed Museum Mile.

New York City Shopping Getaway

One of the best parts of New York City is the shopping. The city is packed full of shopping options for every type of shopper, from the luxury high end boutiques to the deep discount stores. Many noted department stores have their flagship shops in New York City and no trip is complete for a shopper without a little brown Macy’s bag from the original Macy’s Store. In addition to Macy’s the city is host to huge versions of Bloomingdale’s, Sak’s Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman. But the department stores in New York City are far from all the city has to offer. As far as shopping goes, in NYC you’ll literally find everything in one place.

For the best weekend getaway in New York City take a taste of everything the city has to offer, this way you’ll see some of the sights, enjoy some of the cultural aspects, learn about this city’s history and take home a few trinkets to remind you of your vacation.

Cancun, Mexico is a worldwide favorite when it comes to tourist destinations, so much so that it’s sometimes referred to as the Mexican Caribbean. It is estimated that about four million visitors come to the island each year with an average of 190 flights a day. If you’re headed to Cancun for a weekend getaway you may actually want to plan on a themed vacation so you can tailor your activities to experience the parts of Cancun that you’d appreciate most.

Water Fun

What better place to enjoy the water and water activities than an island, and Cancun is one of the best islands for visitors to explore? The beaches of Cancun are one of its biggest draws with powder soft white sand and miles of space. All of the beaches are public property and open to everyone but some are easier to access than others. If you’re looking for snorkeling fun then the area near the Westin Regina, on the southern tip of the hotel zone, is an excellent spot. Swimming is best done on the Caribbean side of the island. The opposite side, Nichupte Lagoon isn’t the best place to swim as there are crocodiles in the lagoon, although they’re not aggressive. But Nichupte Lagoon is a great place to try your hand at some other water activities such as jet skiing, sailing, kayaking, parasailing, windsurfing, and water-skiing. If you’re determined to have an up close and personal experience with an aquatic resident, and not a crocodile, then the Dolphin Discovery at Isla Mujeres is the place to go with unique experiences for tourists with dolphins, manatees, and sea lions. For those who prefer their aquatic adventures from a further distance there are a huge variety of boat trips that let you see the beautiful natural environment and the diversity of wildlife in this tourist paradise.

Theme Parks

Cancun isn’t known for its theme parks but there are a few that are must see experiences that could make for an unforgettable weekend getaway. Xcaret is an ancient Mayan archaeological site that has been transformed into an eco park. Visitors to Xcaret can immerse themselves in the culture by taking a complete archaeological site tour or explore individual sections. Additional activities include temascal, sharks tour, snuba and snorkeling adventures, paradise river, dolphin experiences, natural pools, the beach, the lagoon, underground rivers, the sea trek and a variety of local flora and fauna to explore.

Another exciting adventure park in Cancun is Xel-Ha is another Mayan archaeological site but this one is focused on the water with a natural aquarium lagoon with a shark fence around that is open for guests of the park. In the Xel-Ha inlet there are hundreds of native species and a turtle preserve which works to maintain local populations. At the park you can create experiences with the creatures of Cancun through snorkeling, scuba diving, and special dolphin excursions.

Another interesting park experience in Cancun is the Atlantis Submarine it’s a great opportunity for those who don’t scuba dive to take a look at the marvels under the sea. The submarine seats 48 people and each seat has a porthole for viewing. You will drop down to 100 feet and explore the Chankanaab reef closely. The tour is guided and completely safe so it’s perfect for all visitors to Cancun.

Archeological Vacation

Cancun is a total plethora of archeological wonders and it’s the perfect vacation hotspot for tourists looking to go on an archeological tour. The list of sites is impressive and includes Coba, Tulum, El Rey, El Meco, Kohunlich, Kinichna, Dzibnache, Oxtankah, Chacchoben, Muyil, and more. Some of the more popular sites are Paseo Kukulkan which is a smaller site but features two main plazas with streets which has important implications. Chichen Itza is the most extensive complex of Mayan ruins and dates back to 600 AD, this is easily the most popular tourist attraction. Coba is one of the largest Mayan cities with the Nohoch Mul which is 138 feet tall. Tulum was the only walled city in close proximity to the ocean that the Mayans built. It was a later site, built between 1200 and 1500, and is a bit of a distance from Cancun proper. Xel-Ha is usually combined with a trip to Tulum and visitors to Xel-Ha can take in the archeological wonders from a different perspective as they snorkel in the natural inlet.

Romantic Vacation

If you’re thinking about heading to Cancun to explore the romantic side of life you’re in luck as the beautiful sun drenched city by the sea. In fact Cancun has become a popular destination wedding site. Many of the restaurants in Cancun are geared toward romantic interludes and the concierge at your hotel can help you get a reservation at the current happening hotspot of your choice. One way to boost the romantic nature of your Cancun vacation is to rent a car and take flights to some destinations, then vow to get up early, this way you beat the crowds and nothing ruins romance like a crowd of tourists. Even some of the biggest tourist attractions have their moments of peaceful romance like the butterfly garden in Xcaret. Another incredibly romantic experience are the horseback rides at The Riviera Maya which lets you explore the jungle, the beach and the Caribbean Sea.

Family Vacations

Cancun obviously inspires images of romantic escapes but it’s also an incredible place to take your family for a vacation of a lifetime. Imagine the wonder the ancient ruins of the Mayan can inspire. The incredible delight your family will experience with an intimate dolphin encounter. The fun you can have playing and exploring Xcaret. The learning experiences a submarine or snorkeling adventure can instill. And the relaxing fun you and your family can have just spending a day on the beach taking in the sun, sand and surf. Cancun is actually a perfect vacation spot for an entire family as there are so many different options for activities and many of them have a built in educational component.

Las Vegas is the perfect city for a weekend getaway as there are a variety of things to do throughout the city. For a city that seems centered around gambling and drinking it’s sometimes hard to think outside of the casino and imagine what else there is to do but there’s actually more than meets the eye when it comes to Las Vegas. So let’s look at weekend getaways in Las Vegas and skip the clichés.

Weekend Getaways in Las Vegas for the Naturalist

Being situated in the desert with mountains all around, Las Vegas offers some incredible hiking opportunities in and around the city. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area or (NCA) features red and white sandstone cliffs that you can see from downtown. The views and scenery in this part are spectacular. One of the nicest parts of the Red Rock Canyon are the Spring Mountains, hikes through this mountain will take you through narrow canyons with creeks and waterfalls that provide a break from the heat. Desert National Wildlife Range is the place to visit if the mountains and desert are new to you. The six mountain ranges and wide open expanse is quite awesome and full of interesting natural wildlife. Lake Mead is a pretty incredible hike, especially in the winter as you’ll find some hot springs just begging for a tourist or two to take a dip. But these are just a few of the incredible nature areas the surround Las Vegas.

Weekend Getaways in Las Vegas for the Art Lover

Las Vegas is a city that is full of money and where there’s money there’s usually some fabulous art. The Las Vegas Art Gallery strives to provide you with an art encounter of various sorts with local and international artists. The Bellagio hotel got in on the art craze with the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art which is a small gallery that houses some incredible contemporary works by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. While at the Bellagio you’ll also want to see the incredible blown glass artwork ceiling created by Dale Chihuly, it’s something you’ll never forget. The Liberace Museum gives you a different perspective on art in Las Vegas, this non-profit museum was established to support performing and creative arts and features some incredible museum and art pieces. And finally you’ll want to head to the mall, yep, Fashion Show shopping mall to find Centaur Art Galleries with such a large selection of original artworks that reach back from the 16th Century to modern and contemporary artists.

Weekend Getaways in Las Vegas for the Shopper

Las Vegas is an incredible place for shoppers. In the past the town only had overpriced incredibly gaudy items for those who won large amounts of money and wanted to spend it foolishly or they had cheap souvenirs for anyone who thought they should take something home. But Las Vegas is incredibly different now as it’s packed with incredible stores with wonderful deals. On the strip there are stores within almost every casino but the big shopping draw is the Las Vegas Outlet Center which has a variety of high end stores and stores you love to visit with prices you can’t pass up. The other on the strip shopping location that can’t be missed is Fashion Show. Fashion Show draws more than 10 million people a year and features 2 million square feet of shopping paradise. Traveling off the strip you discover an oasis of outlet shopping centers and shopping malls including the Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas the Las Vegas Premium Outlets the Galleria the Meadows Mall and more.

Weekend Getaways in Las Vegas for Theatre Lovers

Las Vegas is known for its incredible stage productions. The long standing tradition of barely dressed showgirls is still represented by some hotels but most have moved up to classier big ticket productions. The MGM Grand features Ka Cirque du Soleil an act that is simply impossible to understand drawing its inspiration from a variety of cultures and some that may even be invented. Caesars Palace is bringing Cher to its locale to thrill the crowd with a spectacle that could only have Bob Mackie’s stamp on it. The Blue Man Group has become a staple in Las Vegas and can only be found at the Venetian. The only thing to say about the Blue Man Group is if you haven’t seen them then you absolutely should. The Luxor brings magic to a new level with the Criss Angel Believe show which combines magic with incredible Cirque du Soleil productions. And not to be left out of the whole circus thing, the Mirage features LOVE which is a Beatles version of Cirque du Soleil.

Weekend Getaways in Las Vegas for Lovers

Speaking of love, Las Vegas is actually a pretty popular destination for lovers with it’s over the top wedding chapels. In fact, most hotels feature their own wedding chapels so you can create a wedding that best suits your particular style, from a traditional wedding to one performed by Elvis at a drive up. No matter what type of Las Vegas wedding you choose, you’re not alone, more than 120,000 couples get married in Las Vegas every year. To add to the romance, couples in Las Vegas can see the LOVE production at the Mirage featuring Cirque du Soleil’s interpretation of the Beatles. They can visit one of the most romantic sites in the world, or at least a replica of it, the Eiffel Tower. There are so many incredible restaurants with world class chefs in them that it’s almost impossible not to find the perfect spot to share your first meal as a married couple. And to put the cherry on the top of the romance sundae, a gondola ride at the Venetian is bound to make the most stoic heart beat a little bit faster.

And of course, no matter why you’ve chosen to have a weekend getaway in Las Vegas there is always a casino ready to wet your whistle with an alcoholic drink and a one armed bandit or table willing to take your money and support any gambling you feel like doing.

Boston is a noted city for many reasons from the famed Red Sox to the historical Paul Revere so it’s the perfect city to plan a themed weekend getaway around. No matter what your interests are you can find a weekend full of fun and excitement in Boston.

Historical Tour of Boston

Boston’s history reaches back to the settling of New England as it was the capital of Massachusetts and a historical center of the time. In fact, until the 1760’s Boston was America’s largest, wealthiest and most influential city. It was during the early 1770s and the American Revolutionary War that Paul Revere made his famed ride. The Paul Revere House is where he was living at the time of his ride. It is the downtown area’s oldest building and one of the few remaining from that era. Old North Church is closely tied to Revere as it was from the steeple that the church sexton, Robert Newman, held up two lanterns to signal Paul Revere that the British were coming by sea. To see an overview of Boston’s historic landmarks The Freedom Trail takes you on a 2.5 mile self guided tour of Revolutionary sites in downtown Boston. Spend as much or as little time as you’d like visiting each location.

Boston for Shoppers

Boston offers some unique opportunities for shoppers, especially if you’re looking for antiques as the city is one of the oldest in the country. The Back Bay region of Boston is where you’ll find upscale stores, art galleries and most of the top name department stores. It may not be the most unique shopping around but you’ll find what you want and discover some great deals along the way. The Cambridge and Beacon Hill areas of Boston are where you’re most likely to find gifts and souvenirs to take home as tokens of your trip to bean town. Beacon Hill is also the place to go if you’re looking for antiques and treasures from the past.

Boston’s Sports Teams

No matter what your favorite sport, you’re sure to see some action in Boston. Baseball fans can check out the Boston Red Sox at the noted Fenway Park, football fans will want to head to Gillette Stadium to catch the New England Patriots, and basketball enthusiasts can watch the Boston Celtics at TD Banknorth Garden. The TD Banknorth Garden also serves as host for the Boston Bruins hockey games. There is even a professional soccer team, the New England Revolution, and a professional lacrosse team, the Boston Cannons. As if that wasn’t enough, Boston even has a Sports Museum at the TD Banknorth Garden which pays homage to all the great sportsmen and women that have called Boston their home at one time or another.

The Cultural Side of Boston

For those who are really interested in exploring the cultural side of Boston the Museum of Fine Arts should be the first stop on your trip. It is one of the largest museums in the United States and contains more than 450,000 works of art making its collections one of the most comprehensive in the Americas. The Boston Museum of Science is a local landmark with more than 500 interactive exhibits and regular live presentations. Associated with the Museum of Science is the Charles Hayden Planetarium and the Mugar Omni IMAX Theater. Moving away from the standard museum is the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum which originally opened in 1903 and treated guests to incredible garden views and beautiful works of art and today visitors can have virtually the same experience. And for those who admired and respected the 35th President of the United States there is the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, which provides a deeper look at the man and his accomplishments.

Boston Outdoors

Exploring the outdoors in Boston is both enlightening and inspiring as it contains the beauty of nature and some historical significance as well. The Public Garden was created in 1837 and was the first public botanical garden. The Victorian traditions are maintained and beautiful hybrid plants with showy flowers and brilliant colors are on display. Boston Common was established in 1634 and is the first park in North America. The 50 acre park is the anchor of what is known as the Emerald Necklace, a system of connected parks which snakes through the neighborhoods of Boston. The Common started out with cattle grazing in the fields, hosted public hangings, served as a camp ground prior to the American Revolution, and featured such famed speakers as Gloria Steinem, Pope John Paul II, and Martin Luther King Jr. The Emerald Necklace contains more than 1000 acres of outdoor activities that can fill more than a weekend.

Boston for Lovers

If you’re headed to Boston with your sweetheart you may want to add some romance to your trip or hit a few romantic highlights. Once again Boston’s Public Garden is a great place to stop for a picnic or for a trip on the majestic Swan Boats which have been a family run operation since the 1870s. A short walk away is Newbury Street which is great for leisurely strolls, shopping and sitting at a café enjoying a bite to eat. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is also a great stop for lovers as it’s romantic and beautiful with both art and nature wrapped up in a little bit of history. For dinner the Top of the Hub in the Prudential building is an excellent choice as the cuisine is delightful and the live jazz accompanying your meal is incredibly romantic. Or travel over to the North End of Boston which is a very Italian area of the city, in fact many inhabitants still speak Italian in their daily interactions. And of course there is almost no meal as romantic as a great Italian meal, Mamma Maria fits that bill by incorporating fresh local ingredients into northern Italian cuisine with delightful results.

For those looking to get the most out of their weekend getaway to Boston, mix and match the suggestions above to hit every aspect of your likes and dislikes and get a full picture of what Boston has to offer. Keep your eyes open and explore the entire city as there is so much to see and do there is no way you can pack it all in to one weekend.

Atlantic City in New Jersey is one of those strange places that is not known for one thing but several things and all of these things coexist in a harmony that most people would expect, and most places wouldn’t tolerate. If you’re headed to Atlantic City for a Weekend Getaway you’re in for a real treat because there are so many things to do that you can narrow your weekend down to one genre of activities or move around and skip from activity to activity.

Gambling Getaway in Atlantic City

Atlantic City’s popularity has waxed and waned throughout the years and in the 1970s it was at one of its low points. Some ingenious city leaders watched their city crumble as Las Vegas thrived and a new idea was born, gambling in Atlantic City Vegas-Style. In 1976 the citizens of New Jersey approved gambling and the first casino opened in 1978 to very lackluster enthusiasm. It wasn’t until the 1990s that Atlantic City seems to really find its groove and now has finally established itself as an exciting destination, due in part to the incredible casino/hotels that have cropped up. Some Atlantic City hotels to consider are The Atlantic City Hilton, Bally’s Atlantic City, The Borgata, Caesar’s Atlantic City, Harrah’s Atlantic City, Resorts Atlantic City, Showboat, Tropicana, Trump Marina, Trump Plaza, and Trump Taj Mahal to choose from its no wonder that people are more interested in turning these resort/casinos into destinations in themselves. Each hotel features the full range from headline entertainment, a complete range of table games and slots, themed attractions, and lavish accommodations with top notch spas, restaurants and nightclubs.

Beach and Boardwalk Getaway in Atlantic City

The beachside location of Atlantic City made it an obvious tourist destination and prime real estate but the problem was there was a lot of marshland between that strip of land and the rest of the state. In 1854 the city was incorporated and train service began. The first boardwalk wasn’t far behind and cropped up in 1870. The boardwalk was originally designed to help the luxury hotels along the beach keep sand from traveling into their lobbies on the souls of their guests. The combination of two boardwalks along the Jersey shore which connect together total 5.75 miles and are the world’s longest boardwalk. Along the boardwalk you’ll now find hotels, themed piers, casinos, shops, an art center and historical museum. But of course the best thing that lines the boardwalk in Atlantic City is the Atlantic Ocean and the beach. Atlantic City has some of the best beaches around with soft white sand that stretches up to 100 feet wide. The beaches are groomed regularly to keep them soft and supple, the descent into the water is gradual and there are almost not serious drop offs, and once you get about 50 feet from the water’s edge there is a nice sandbar to relax and play on. This makes the surf rather tame, which isn’t too great for surfers but awesome for swimmers and families.

Golf Getaway in Atlantic City

Atlantic City has no shortage of golf courses and golf resorts and it’s a great place for a vacation because the seasonal weather is very hospitable and the landscape is uniquely challenging. The courses to choose from include Atlantic City Country Club a part of Harrah’s Resort, Twisted Dune, Harbor Pines Golf Course, Blue Heron Pines, The Links at Brigantine Beach, Mays Landing Golf Club and about 25 more courses in the immediate vicinity of Atlantic City. It’s almost impossible imagine all the golfing opportunities in Atlantic City and the variety of courses and challenges offered. Look for a golf package to get the best deal and give you the variety you are looking for.

Historic and Cultural Getaway in Atlantic City

Atlantic City is full of historic and cultural spots that can excite the mind as well as the eye. The city has a lot to offer if you know where to look. One of your first stops should be the boardwalk which is very famous and historical but it’s not as exciting as where it leads you. Follow the boardwalk to Garden Pier which was opened in 1913 and was considered a very upscale destination at the time with theaters and ballrooms. Now the Garden Pier is home to the Atlantic City Art Center and the Atlantic City Historic Museum. The Absecon Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey and one of the oldest in the country. You can walk up all 228 steps of the lighthouse and at the top in addition to the breathtaking views of the city and the Atlantic Ocean you can see the first order Fresnel Lens which was originally lit in 1857. In addition the lighthouse has gone through a multimillion dollar restoration which includes a replica of the light keeper’s dwelling, an educational museum, a gift shop and the grounds. There is also the Atlantic City Aquarium, Noyes Museum of Art, and the famed Lucy the Elephant.

Cheap Getaway in Atlantic City

And for those people looking for a cheap vacation packed with deals, Atlantic City has some great options that can easily fill a getaway weekend. The beaches in Atlantic City are totally free so there’s a day of fun there without any expense at all. The noted Atlantic City Historical Museum and the AC Arts Center are both free and have free parking. There is also the AC Free Public Library which isn’t very exciting for vacationers but their free concert series at Kennedy Plaza sure is. There are also free outdoor concerts at Bally’s Casino. Another exciting event is The Show at the Showboat Casino which is a Mardi Gras parade that takes place four times daily. Every hour there is The Water Show at the end of The Pier Shops, a nice relaxing break in between shopping. Absecon Lighthouse and museum is free although there is a small charge to climb to the top.

Atlantic City is a great place to spend a weekend getaway no matter what you like to do, but for the best experience, try to taste a little of everything the city has to offer.

If you’re looking for a great weekend getaway but don’t necessarily want to spend a ton of money you can still target a foreign country, just set your sights higher than tropical. Montreal is really a great place to go for a weekend getaway and the prices are much better than they would be if you were trying to find a tropical oasis for your quick escape from reality.

Old Montreal

For history buffs and those with a great sense of nostalgia an Old Montreal weekend getaway will give you everything you want and need. Old Montreal or Vieux-Montreal is the oldest area in the city having been established in 1605 as a fur trading post. The area grew and was quite successful. The area grew and in 1725 it was fortified and remained French until 1760 when it was surrendered to the British army, the fortification wasn’t destroyed until 1821. Old Montreal contains some of the oldest buildings, dating back to the 1600’s and it is one of the oldest urban areas in North Americas. Visitors can tour noted building such as Montreal City Hall, Bonsecours Market, Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel and Chateau Ramezay. In addition you can visit Champ de Mars which is a large expanse that gives you great views of downtown Montreal. The Champ de Mars has some fascinating archaeological remains which provide evidence of the fortified settlement. Old Montreal has the look and feel of times gone by and what better way to explore the city and see the sights than in a horse drawn carriage or caleche. You can choose from a 30 minute or 60 minute horse tour through the city and get all the highlights from your carriage driver. In the center of Old Montreal you’ll find countless cultural landmarks, boutiques, sidewalk cafes and antique shops, everything you need to add that extra spice to your Montreal getaway weekend.

Nature lovers visiting Montreal will find plenty of wildlife in and around Montreal but two places that are bound to be highlights of your trip are the Biodome and the Botanical Gardens. The Biodome is an oasis in the heart of the city with several amazing ecosystems recreated inside the building. There is a Tropical Forest, Laurentian Forest, the St. Lawrence Marine ecosystem, representations of the Arctic and Antarctic. The Biodome offers self guided tours with information posted on panels throughout. The Botanical Gardens or Jardin Botanique de Montreal has a collection of more than 22,000 plant species and cultivars, 10 exhibition greenhouses, and about 30 thematic gardens. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and there to provide you with information and keep the gardens beautiful throughout the year. In addition to the Biodome and the Botanical Gardens in Montreal, Mont Royal is a must for Nature Lovers. This park is the best in the city as the 101 hectare park lies right in the city, including part of the mountain and the city’s highest spot, 234 meters high. The park was designated as such in 1876 and provides visitors and locals with a beautiful view of the city and a place to enjoy the outdoors.

Educational Getaway

If you’re ideal weekend getaway in Montreal includes some educational highlights then you’ll definitely want to stop at the Museum of Archeology and History and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The Museum of Archeology and History is set on the very same grounds that Father Vimont held mass for the founding of Montreal in 1642. The land now serves to invite visitors to celebrate the history of Montreal and the area prior to settlement. Architectural remains of human activity more than 1000 years ago is displayed in situ and hundreds of artifacts are held within the museum. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts seeks to promote Canadian and international artists through their past and present artwork. Founded in 1860 the museum was one of the first in North America, there are currently almost 35,000 creations to examine reaching from antiquity to modern art and covering almost every aesthetic possible. Together the two museums give visitors and locals a great look at what the city of Montreal is and what it used to be.

Excitement and Thrills

If you’re idea of a vacation is more Vegas than museum Montreal has that too, in fact it has that in abundance. The Casino du Quebec in Montreal is a great place to start with all that a modern casino has to offer from slots to poker and more. You can easily spend your entire vacation just soaking up the casino night life, but what fun is that when there’s so much going on. Montreal has its own unique take on cuisine and a regional flare like nowhere else. The best restaurants in the area, Aux Cuisine de Terroir, Torque! and Chez L’Epicier give you an upscale version of the local food with traditional classic French style using regional ingredients that include a lot of wild game and freshwater fish in addition to the seasonal vegetables. But one restaurant that is a must if you’re looking for decadence in Montreal is Restaurant les Princesses, one of the famous topless breakfast joints in the city, although they serve more than breakfast. Montreal also has an incredible nightlife that can keep you dancing until at least 3am. Montreal is truly a great party town with no pretenses to be found

The Winter Getaway

If you’re headed to Montreal in the winter time you still can have an incredible time even in the frosty environment. The Underground City will protect you from a lot of the frigid north and you can shop your butt off. The Underground City is under the heart of the city and stretches 19 miles long and it is simply full of shopping. The underground passages also connect shopping malls, apartments, hotels, businesses, museums and other establishments, meaning you actually never have to go outside if you don’t want to. But if you do want to go outside Montreal has a lot of wonderful winter sports you can participate in like downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, skating, tobogganing and anything else you can think of to do outside. If you’d rather watch sports then there are a number of professional teams to watch such as the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Alouettes, Montreal Impact, Montreal Junior Hockey Club, and the Montreal Sasquatch.

Philadelphia is one of the most historic cities in the United States and one of the most exciting cities to visit. There are so many things to do on a weekend getaway to Philadelphia that you might be best served by turning it into a theme weekend and hitting as many highlights in your areas of interest as possible.

Historical Philadelphia Weekend Getaway

Philadelphia is seared into American history as the place where the Declaration of Independence was signed and the leading politicians of the day initially made Philadelphia the capitol of the United States. So if you’re traveling to Philadelphia what a better way to uncover the real city than to take a historical weekend getaway. One must see historical location has to include Independence National Historic Park which houses Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. The home of the Declaration of Independence and the famed bell who’s great flaw is known by every school aged child. The buildings have been maintained fabulously and they look almost exactly as they did when our country’s forefathers walked their halls. Within walking distance is the Betsy Ross House, another home that has been meticulously maintained and in the spring and summer months colonial characters set up shop to display their wares while the Once Upon a Nation storytelling beach features narrators with tales for guests. In the evening you can cap off your day with the Lights of Liberty an ambulatory sound and light show reflected off the buildings around you on the ground where the American Revolution was actually fought. The battle is recreated in this performance to the sound of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Romantic Philadelphia Weekend Getaway

Philadelphia has the nickname the City of Brotherly Love, so it seems a rather appropriate place to vacation with your sweetheart. Center City is a great stop for romantics on a weekend getaway in Philadelphia, the main reason is it’s a fantastic place to go for dinner and a movie, and the transportation can’t be beat as Phlash, the city’s purple trolley takes you from place to place in style. For a different sort of night at the movies, try Movies Under Penn, the City Hall Film Series where movies are presented outside in the summer, all films are free and open to the public. If you’re in the mood for a more traditional theater setting then check out Philadelphia-theater.com for a complete list of the great productions in and around Philadelphia. If its dining you want then you’re in luck as there are a huge variety of fine dining options available, and basically something for every taste or culinary whim. For a different distraction, how about a his and hers spa treatment at Terme di Aroma, a Mediterranean and holistic approach to the balance of mind, body, and spirit. And to cap it all off, end your night at the Philadelphia BellaVista Bed & Breakfast a charming quaint home right in the middle of the Center City District.

Frugal Philadelphia Weekend Getaway

If you are looking for a way to stretch your budget during these tough economic times, Philadelphia actually has a lot of ways to explore the city for free. If you’re looking for a historical experience, The Independence National Historic Park is free and offers more than an afternoon’s worth of activities. Military buffs can get their fill at the New Hall Military Museum which gives you an in-depth look at the history of the marines from 1775 to 1781 before the Declaration of Independence was signed, there is also a floor dedicated to the Navy and the Army. If you’d like to know more about money without spending any then the U.S. Mint offers an interesting tour with loads of free information. Culture buffs will appreciate The Rodin Museum which is free and open to the public or the Philadelphia Museum of Art which is open on Sundays without charge but asks its patrons for a donation of their choosing. For outdoor entertainment, the Awbury Arboretum is a wonderful way to relax and see the way the city once was back in 1852 when Henry Cope purchased this patch of land for his family.

Philadelphia Museum Weekend Getaway

With so much history it’s no wonder that Philadelphia has a large number of museums to explore and boasts some incredible exhibits. The Rodin Museum was envisioned by Jules Mastbaum as he began amassing a huge collection, after his death his wife decided to continue her husband’s dream and created the museum dedicated to Auguste Rodin. The Philadelphia Museum of Art absolutely must not be missed as it is one of the largest art museums in the United Sates and stacked with some incredible works of art. With more than 25 exhibits each year and more than 225,000 objects in the permanent collection the museum always offers something new and exciting. The Franklin Institute Science Museum features its own collection of permanent and traveling exhibits. One of most anticipated traveling exhibits is the Galileo the Medici & the Age of Astronomy. This is the only stop in the United States for this exhibit and absolutely a must see for museum buffs.

Sports Fan Philadelphia Weekend Getaway

If you’re a sports fan then Philly’s got a lot of options for you. The Philadelphia Eagles have yet to win a Super Bowl but have put in two appearances in 1980 and 2004. Having been around since 1933 they’re one of the favorite teams and always put on a great show. The Philadelphia Phillies are the local Major League Baseball team and currently hold the 2008 World Series champion title, a title they also held back in 1980. The Philadelphia 76ers hold up their end in the basketball arena and always provide a great show for the crowd. Besides the big three there are tons of other sporting options including ice hockey, soccer, lacrosse, tennis and even more minor league, college, and high school teams.

So no matter what you’re into, Philadelphia has a weekend getaway for everyone.

If you’re trying to come up with a great weekend getaway then add Baltimore to the list as it’s a fabulous place to escape to. In Baltimore there’s a little bit of everything for everyone from art to history to fine dining to sporting activities and natural beauty. Since Baltimore is such a fantastic city, why not plan your vacation around one of their exciting events and celebrations.

Baltimore Orioles

If you’re a baseball fan, especially a Baltimore Orioles fan, then why not schedule a visit to the city and catch a game? With a nod to the working family the Oriole management has decided to make a visit to the ballpark more affordable with the Birdland Stimulus Package. There are several different ways you can take advantage of their deals including Kid’s Night, Birthdays at Oriole Park, Junior Orioles Dugout Club, Student Nights, Bleaches and Boog’s, and Ollie’s Bargain Nights. These fan friendly programs are designed to bring more people out to enjoy America’s favorite pastime and give fans a great deal at the same time. New programs will be announced throughout the year, so keep your eye on the website to find out what deal is best for your budget.

Nevermore 2009

The city of Baltimore is celebrating the brilliance that was Edgar Allen Poe throughout the entire year with Nevermore 2009. The events begin on January 19th, the 200th birthday of the famed writer. At differing times you can catch staged readings of one act plays by Poe and performances of his humor and horror, a cemetery excursion reminiscent of The Fall of the House of Usher, a scavenger hunt of Poe history, a sculptural and architectural extravaganza, a tour of Mount Clare Museum House, Artscape festival with its nod to Poe, book festivals, a unique tie to the National Museum of Dentistry, Clayfest, viewing of Poe’s body, a candlelight vigil, and a funeral service. In addition to all of the activities presented by the city and various groups, Harbor Magic has created its own weird get away in honor of Edgar Allen Poe. And to keep the theme going, many local hotels are offering deals for Poe fans that not only give you a discount on your room for the weekend getaway but also deals and discounts on many activities throughout the town. Check the website to see what hotels are participating and what weekends offer the best Poe excitement.

Preakness Celebration 2009

Baltimore’s Old Hilltop is hosting the 134th Preakness Stakes in May of 2009 and the whole city of Baltimore gets a little Preakness fever during the event. Whether you’re a horse race fan or not, it’s an event worth seeing at least once in your life. In addition to the grand event itself, there are several other activities happening in and around the city that make it a true weekend getaway. MECU’s Pee Week Preakness gives little ones a chance to run their own Preakness as they bounce away on Hippity Hops at the Federal Hill Park. If your children don’t want to hop themselves, they may enjoy the Preakness Frog Hop at the War Memorial Plaza at City Hall. For some reason the city didn’t think racing horses and frogs was enough and they decided to tap the crab kingdom with The Crab Derby where local celebrities race crabs in order to win $500 for their favorite charity. One event that is a can’t miss is The Preakness Celebration Parade of Lights where illuminated floats, helium balloon characters, horses, bands, and local notables take to the street for a nighttime parade in honor of the Preakness.

Maryland Film Festival

For film buffs the best time to visit Baltimore is in May during the Maryland Film Festival. Funded by a joint public and private partnership the film festival is looking to bring a unique voice to the film festival circuit. The schedules are set so as to reach a majority of people with differing interests. Filmmakers are invited to personally present their films so the audience gets a more in-depth experience with the post-screening discussion. There are no prizes so each presentation is there simply to speak for itself. In addition to movie screenings, there are also panel discussions which dive into certain aspects of the industry in depth which is great for those wanting to learn more about the business of film. Some of the highlights of the Maryland Film Festival are their preservation films which are restored movies and archival prints which really deserve a viewing.

Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine

History buffs will enjoy a visit to Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine for the Fourth of July celebrations. This star shaped fort is best known for the part it played in the War of 1812 when it held off the British Navy. One of the reasons this particular battle was so remembered is perhaps not because it was successful, but because it was during the battle that Francis Scott Key penned the national anthem of the United States, The Star-Spangled Banner. During the Fourth of July the Fort gets all patriotic and features fife and drum music, cannon firing, a musket salute for 18 states, dancing and games from the era and a public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Godiva Getaway

Chocolate lovers are recognized in the Godiva Chocolate and Love getaway provided by Harbor Magic and their hotels. This is the perfect way to frame a romantic weekend retreat.

You wouldn’t know it today, but Anaheim, California was actually founded by a group of farmers, grape farmers actually. Today the city is a hoping metropolitan area that is best known for its attraction parts, Disneyland being the most famous. But there is a lot more to do in Anaheim than just hang out with the big mouse. Use one of the following weekend getaway solutions to take advantage of your time and get the most out of Anaheim.

For the golfers in the group, escape the synthetic fun of the amusement parks and get back to nature. Anaheim has two noted golf courses, Anaheim Hills and Dad Miller where you can wile away the hours soaking in the sun and natural beauty of the original rolling hills of Anaheim. Anaheim Hills takes full advantage of the unspoiled land by using the undulating hills, rambling stream, and ancient trees to their advantage and possibly your disadvantage. Dad Miller is a bit less challenging with an easy walking course that appeals for those looking for a relaxing day on the links. Take a couple of days and play both courses, you can even spend your evenings practicing on the lighted driving range.

If you’re a baseball fan, or if a family member is, then the Anaheim Angels offer some unique opportunities for sports fans. Throughout the year there are clinics for budding players and aspiring coaches so baseball enthusiasts can get a hands on feel for how the game is played and the myriad of rules underpinning every move. It’s a rare opportunity to spend your time not only watching an exciting game, but actually becoming a part of it. Who knows, your kid may pick up some tips that can change his or her life.

Looking for a retreat away from everything, the closest thing to a romantic bed and breakfast in Anaheim is the Lemon Tree Hotel. It’s not exactly a quaint, family run B&B but it does have its charm. Not only are there hotel rooms but there are apartments with kitchens for those people looking to spend a little more time in the area. The Lemon Tree refers to itself as a boutique hotel with an Australian flare, but guests will take greater note of the amenities that make you feel at home while away from home.

Shoppers planning on a weekend getaway with a retail theme then the downtown area is where you want to be. With a number of hotels to choose from you can find one close enough that you can literally roll out of bed and begin shopping and not stop until the stores kick you out. Look to find the best shopping at The Block at Orange where it’s nonstop shopping with lots of stores you’ve heard of and some you’ve never experienced. Fashion Island has more than 200 boutiques with enough variety to keep you entertained all day. The Ultimate Shopping Resort boasts more than 280 high end stores for those willing to dump a lot of cash on retail items. And Downtown Disney gives you a little bit of everything and a whole lot of mouse.

If you’re thinking that you can turn Anaheim into your private oasis, then you’ll want to visit the Anaheim Hilton. One of the only local spa facilities that offer accommodations as well. The Hilton features a 25,000 square foot spa & fitness center with a full gym worth of fitness equipment, there are group classes in spinning, core training and yoga, an indoor pool/spa, a full basketball court and proshop. If you think the Hilton is a great place to stay, but not the best place to spa, don’t despair, the town is sprinkled with day spas that give you a taste of different techniques and treatments.

But if you’re coming to Anaheim, you probably really only want to do one thing, and that is experience as many Disney creations as possible. So dive in and experience the world that Walt created.

Disneyland is the ultimate vacation for kids of all ages, even those that are just young at heart, over 500 million visitors can’t be wrong. The park is so much more than originally planned as now it is a resort that lets you enjoy the magic 24 hours a day. From mythical places and imaginary creatures to honest to goodness incredible sights and sounds, Disney is an entertainment heaven for visitors.

If you’re traveling with children and want them to get the most out of your trip to Disneyland, stay at the Disneyland Hotel which keeps you closest to the action that your children will cherish. It’s the vacation that future dreams are made of and past memories that are held on to for a lifetime.

For a different sort of Disney vacation, maybe to those who have been to the magic kingdom too many times, give Disney’s California Adventure Park a whirl. This new take on the magic of a Disney experience still gives you exciting rides and interesting shows, as well as the ubiquitous parade, but the theme is a little different, and isn’t the theme what a theme park is all about anyway? Disney’s California Adventure Park focuses on the history of California with an emphasis on the gold rush, the golden era of Hollywood and the nearby ocean’s appeal.

And, as mentioned before, Downtown Disney is a happening hotspot for an older crowd. The shopping is obviously divine, but there is more to the downtown than simply stores. You can find some of the best dining options around and then stumble in to the House of Blues for live entertainment or head to the AMC theaters for a night of cinematic adventure.

It’s amazing to think that Anaheim was once a peaceful area full of flourishing vineyards but times have changed and Anaheim was definitely moving with the times. If you’re escaping to Anaheim for a weekend getaway you can find a few things to do that will appeal to everyone, but your best bet is really spending the time at a Disney concoction as it really is Anaheim’s most famous landmark.
