St. Mark’s Basilica is a cathedral in Venice and it is well-known as one of the city’s most famous and beautiful examples of Byzantine architecture. Situated on Piazza San Marco, the building was originally constructed as the chapel for the city’s rulers and not as the city’s cathedral. The building has served for more than 200 years as the seat of the Patriarch of Venice.
