Just a few weeks ago we featured some of the best art galleries of London with the National Gallery coming in at the top of the list. It’s a gallery that dates back to 1824 and includes paintings from many of the most famous artists you could list: van Gogh, Cezanne, Rembrandt and Monet among them. But here’s some news that might be especially enticing in the current economic climate – now you may not have to travel all the way to London to see these great paintings.

iPhone App Brings the National Gallery to You

If you’ve got an iPhone, you may already have discovered a bunch of great travel related applications that can help you plan your travels, make bookings or inform and entertain you while you are on the road. Now the National Gallery has got involved in a partnership which has produced a great new application – they say it is the first such application released by a major art gallery – which will bring at least some of the gallery to you, wherever you may be.

The Love Art application features 250 different paintings from the National Gallery’s collection, plus three and a half hours of audio and video content showcasing the art and the gallery, including some interesting interviews. There are also twelve “galleries” arranged by themes so you can delve deeper into the area of art that interests you most. They say that with the iPhone’s high quality screen, you can actually get a great quality image of the paintings they showcase and can zoom in to get extra detail – of course, it’s not quite the same as being in front of the real thing, but if you can’t make it to London, then it’s a pretty good substitute.

If this sounds like something that might interest you, then the Love Art application is currently available to be downloaded for free from the iTunes store. The way the press release puts it, it rather sounds like it might not always be free, so I recommend downloading it now even if you’re not quite ready to gallery surf just yet.
