Business leaders in Las Vegas, Nevada are up in arms after recent comments by President Barack Obama. In the last few months, Las Vegas has seen a notable drop in corporate travel to the city, which is causing businesses to lose millions of dollars in potential revenue.
Speaking about the various companies who will be receiving bailout money from the United States government, Obama said that those companies receiving help from taxpayers “can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas.”
Wynn Resorts Ltd. and Las Vegas Sands Corp. are two businesses who were angered by Obama’s wording. According to reports, corporations such as Goldman Sachs have canceled plans for corporate travel to Las Vegas to avoid the potential publicity backlash.
If corporate travel to Las Vegas continues to decrease, many businesses in the travel industry will likely have to cut their work force. Those businesses range everywhere from casinos to convention halls to limo services.
According to Rahm Emanuel, the Chief of Staff of the White House, Obama’s comments weren’t for the purpose of damaging Las Vegas’ reputation or revenue. Instead, he says, the President’s comments were aimed at letting companies who are to be bailed out know that they won’t be free to waste the money they receive.
