The new rules went into effect on Monday, Jan. 12 requiring people that are traveling to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program to register online prior to their trip. Previously, travelers could fill out paper forms at the airport or in flight.
Created to improve U.S. security, the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) has been voluntary since August 2008 but became officially mandatory on Monday. Travelers should fill out the forms online at least 72 hours before their departure. The ESTA tool is simple to use and available in 16 languages. There is no fee involved and nearly all online applications are approved under 15 seconds. However, those who are denied must apply to the U.S. Consulate for a visa.
This program is only for travelers from the 35 countries in the Visa Waiver Program (WPT). A visa is not required for citizens of these countries to enter the United States.
If you a see a website that is charging a fee for the ESTA form, please note that the service is free for everyone and you should not be charged. Instead, go directly the U.S. goverment website at cbp.gov/esta where you can find detailed information, as well as fill out the electronic form.
