With the value of the dollar rising, gas prices declining and hotel rates decreasing, many experts are predicting that 2009 will be a great time to get deals on international travel.

According to the Associated Press, Genevieve Shaw, senior editor of Travelocity, said, “As long as the economic slowdown continues, deals will abound for people who do have discretionary income to travel.”

With the dollar going a lot further against other Euro than six or eight months ago, it may be the time to plan that European vacation you have been puting off. If you are interested in a major vacation, begin planning now and take advantage of the current economic situation.

Though travel to Europe by Americans was down nearly 5 percent in the first eight months of 2008, compared to 2007, expect that to change in 2009. Other overseas destinations may also see more American travelers in the new year.

You shouldn’t expect substantially lower domestic airfares, however. The air travel industry expect stable (and high) prices throughout 2009. However, many Americans may choose to travel by car if the gas prices stay low – which is good for the hotel industry.

As always, when pricing vacation deals, shop around. Many hotels may be offering discounted room rates, free nights and other perks to try to keep up with the competition. Keep an eye on the value of the dollar and try to capitalize on its strength when making plans to travel to Europe and other international destinations.
