Expect to Pay More This Holiday Season

If you haven’t booked your holiday flights yet, be prepared to pay more than you did last year. According to the airfare experts at Farecast.com, holiday airfares for 2008 are up more than 30% on average than those in 2007. Don’t expect to get any last minute deals either. That trick normally doesn’t work around the holidays because as the inventories get smaller, the fares actually rise.

But that doesn’t mean that you can’t find other ways to save money while traveling this holiday season. One of the most important things you should try to do is avoid traveling on peak travel days, such as the day before Thanksgiving and the Sunday afternoon/evening after Thanksgiving, along with December 23rd, December 26th, December 28th and January 2nd. If you can fly early in morning on the actual holiday, that’s probably your best bet to get the lowest fare.

You can also save money by looking for alternatives routes at neighboring airports, avoiding direct flights and comparing prices with sites such as Kayak and Orbitz. All in all, you are probably looking at spending more on airfare than you have in previous years. However, if you shop smart, you can avoid dramatic increases. Be sure to check the restrictions of the airline, including bag allowance, weight limits and other details in order to avoid further costs.
