Frommer’s has been telling travelers where to go since 1957–first with its popular guidebooks and more recently on the web. Each year, the Frommer’s editors get together and choose the top destinations for the coming year. This year’s list is surprising. It offers everything from the Jersey Shore to Morocco. Below are some of their 13 picks:
- Denver, Colorado: Home of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, the Great American Beer Festival and the gateway to the Rockies.
- New Orleans: According to Frommer’s, this beleaguered gulf city is ready for tourism–and affordable, too.
- Pittsburgh: The Steel City turns 250 in 2008 and the city has planned a series of events to mark its semiquincentinnial, including ballet and theater performances, sports events, and the Carnegie International Art Fair.
- The American Whiskey Trail: Tennessee is home to the Jack Daniels distillery as well as a dozen other Whiskey houses. The trail combines American history with the story of this home-grown liquor.
- Essaouira, Morocco: A UNESCO World Heritage city, this seaside resort sports affordable accommodations, great wind-surfing, abundant art galleries, and a charm all its own.
- St. Lucia: This southern Caribbean island is now easier to reach with a new direct flight from New York’s JFK airport. The quiet island has a mixed French and British heritage and offers a lush rainforest and secluded and romantic inns.
