You might have heard of the New 7 Wonders of the World project, which culminated in July this year with the announcement of seven modern day sightseeing must-sees. With that project behind them, the organizers are busy working on the New 7 Wonders of Nature nominations, a long process which will see 21 finalists selected during 2009, followed by worldwide voting until the final list of seven natural sites is announced in 2010.
The nominees include deserts, lakes, dunes, rivers, waterfalls, canyons and many more wonders from the natural world. In recent news the Mariana Trench in the middle of the Pacific was added to the list of nominees, and while there’s no doubting it’s a natural wonder – it’s the deepest known oceanic trench in the world – it doesn’t fit that well with other wonders that are more open for sightseeing and tourists. Other nominees like the Grand Canyon, Yosemite National Park, the Great Barrier Reef or Mount Fuji seem somehow more appropriate.
If you think a particular natural site is worthy of being a New Wonder of Nature, you can nominate them, or vote for sites that others have nominated. The voting and nomination process will continue right through until New Year’s Eve of 2008, so you have plenty of time to make your decision.
