People the world over have heard of places like Tucson, Arizona or Nutbush, thanks to immortalized lyrics from the Beatles and Tina Turner. With hundreds of place names belonging to towns and cities he knew nothing about, George Miller set off around the United States to find out more about the places behind the lyrics. This journey produced the entertaining travelogue This is the Way to Amarillo.

Miller’s story blends his travels with both local and musical history. Six weeks and five thousand miles gave Miller ample opportunity to meet interesting people and find some curious stories, and he’s put them together well in this book, detailing the trip in chronological fashion but with plenty of side tidbits interspersed. Each chapter focuses broadly on a different location from a different song, and the full lyrics to the song are included at the end of the chapter which adds to the musical journey of the book.

As Miller is a British writer, he sees all these American towns with fresh eyes and makes a lot of interesting observations, as well as unearthing unusual pieces of trivia. The result makes This is the Way to Amarillo a refreshingly fun read for music lovers as well as travelers.
