A Voyage Long and Strange

Tony Horwitz has got a new book out, and before you even open it you can have a strong feeling that it’s going to be a good read. Horwitz is a Pulitzer prize winning journalist who likes to get out and about in the world, and to look back into history as well.

And that’s what he does in his new book, A Voyage Long and Strange: Rediscovering the New World. What Horwitz decided he wanted to explore was a gap in his everyday knowledge – what happened in America after Columbus sailed in 1492 and before Jamestown was founded in the early 1600s. As well as doing plenty of in depth research from multiple sources, Horwitz did hands-on research by visiting numerous historical sites and following the footsteps of those early explorers and settlers.

As a result, A Voyage Long and Strange is structured in three main sections, discussing the discrete topics of discovery, conquest and then settlement. You’ll definitely be surprised by some of the common truths about history that he is able to dismiss as myths, and he also takes the “heroic” aspect out of a lot of history. It turns out that real life is much tougher than our stories and reminiscences like to remember. Whether you want to travel to historic spots or just learn some new interpretations of America’s history, Horwitz’s new book is very likely to impress you.
