If you’re planning a trip to India any time soon, get hold of Sarah Macdonald’s Holy Cow! to prepare you for some of what you might find in this fascinating country.
Macdonald is an Australian journalist who ended up living in New Delhi for two years when her fiancé was posted there with his TV job. The interesting twist at the start of the story is that she’d already had a bad backpacking experience in India and didn’t want to return.
While this book is essentially a chronological travel narrative of Macdonald’s experiences in India, there’s one main theme: religion, or perhaps in a broader sense, spirituality. Macdonald decides she wants to learn all about the broad range of spiritual activities practiced across India.
Different chapters of Holy Cow! see Macdonald describing a silent meditation retreat in the hills, visiting ashrams and a Christian festival, and she even bathes in the Ganges River as part of a Hindu ritual. There are also interesting stories about her life in India as an ex-pat and a tourist, which will both give you an insight into some of the challenges involved in traveling in India, as well as providing inspiration for places you want to visit.
