In cheesy movies, the guy trying to impress everyone always says something along the lines of that he always rents the convertible and he always flies first class. We laugh because we figure these luxuries seem silly in comparison to their cost. And when we get the offer to upgrade ourselves, we might think about it but we usually pass on by because it doesn’t seem necessary. Maybe it’s not, but flying first class sure is nice.
Here’s how you can afford to fly first class so you can see for yourself if it’s worth it:
- Be a frequent flier. This is the most obvious way to get an upgrade to first class. Join the club and get the benefits since there’s no good reason not to. If you fly often enough, you can fly first class for free.
- Ask about standby upgrades. It’s sometimes possible to upgrade at the gate and the cost is usually low. It’s a way to check out first class on a whim.
- Keep an eye out for deals. They’re offered on a regular basis so if you’re paying attention, you can pick them up.
- Try a discount airline. The cheaper airlines frequently have first class tickets at a rate that’s similar to the coach prices on other airlines. The amenities aren’t quite as great as first class in a fancy plane but it’s still an indulgence.
See, it’s possible to afford to fly first class. And it’s an experience worth having at least once. You get more comfort, better access on and off the plane and other perks. You may not ever need to rent the convertible, but you should always fly first class.
