Does Southwest Charge for Heavy Baggage?

Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-7H4 N707SA

If you are flying Southwest, you need to be aware of the heavy baggage restrictions that are in place. In other words, your luggage must not exceed the limit set forth by the airline. If it does, you will either have to pay a fee, or if too heavy, you will only be able to check it as air cargo. And if you need to check your luggage as air cargo, there are additional steps that you must take.

First things first, the maximum weight for one bag is 50 pounds. Overweight bags from 51 to 70 pounds are assessed a fee of $25. Items weighing 71 to 100 pounds are only accepted for a charge of $50. As noted above, if your bag weighs more than 100 pounds it can only be checked as air cargo. For this to happen, you must be classified as a known shipper by the TSA. As you can imagine, it is much easier to simply make sure that your bag does not weigh more than 100 pounds.

Southwest does charge for heavy baggage. Fortunately, for customers of this airline the restrictions and fees are not as nearly strict as some others.

What are Southwest Luggage Policies?

Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-7H4 N221WN

On January 29, 2008, Southwest implemented a new baggage allowance policy. Each passenger is allowed to check two pieces of baggage. If you need to check a third bag, you will be charged a fee of $25. For bags four through nine, you will be charged $50 per piece. Any item in addition to this limit will be assessed a $110 fee.

Southwest also has weight and size allowance restrictions to be aware of. Items that weigh between 51 and 70 pounds are assessed a $25 fee. Those weighing between 71 and 100 pounds cost $50 to check. Items over 100 pounds must be shipped as air cargo. That being said, passengers cannot use Southwest air cargo unless classified as a known shipper by the TSA.

Many of these policies went into place in January 2008 due to the struggling airline industry. Although Southwest does place fees on certain types of luggage, their restrictions are a bit more lenient than other airlines. This is sure to help them to steal business from the competition.

Southwest Baggage Restrictions, Luggage Charges and Carry on Luggage

Slam Dunk One
If you are going to fly Southwest, you should be aware of their baggage restrictions as well as any corresponding charges. To go along with this, you will also want to familiarize yourself with the carry on policy.

At this time, Southwest allows each passenger to check on two pieces of luggage free of charge. When compared to other airlines, this is one of the best deals out there. Most of the competition has begun to charge an additional fee for more than one bag.

That being said, there are weight and size allowances that must be adhered to. If you need to check a bag that is larger than the limits, you will be subjected to a fee of up to $110 per item. While not the largest fee in the airline industry, it is something to keep in mind if you are going to be traveling with overweight luggage.

Southwest allows each passenger to carry on one bag, as well as one smaller personal-type item such as a camera bag, purse, or briefcase.

It is easy to see that Southwest is trying to cater to their passengers by not placing too many restrictions or fees on them. But even then, passengers must be aware of the restrictions and other rules that are in place.

Like all airlines, Southwest does charge for certain types of luggage. But of course, they have their own allowances and restrictions. If you are going to be flying Southwest in the near future, you will want to know what you can check free of charge and what you will have to pay for. This will allow you to better plan the way that you pack for your trip.

Southwest allows each passenger to check two bags free of charge. Most airlines only allow one bag for free, so as you can see, Southwest is definitely going above and beyond.

If you need to check a third bag you will be charged a fee of $25. For bags four through nine, a fee of $50 will be charged. Anything over this limit is assessed a fee of $110 per piece.

Additionally, there are both weight and size allowances that you need to be aware of. For instance, a bag that weighs less than 50 pounds and is smaller than 62 inches will not be charged a fee. But a bag between 51 and 70 pounds will only be accepted for a charge of $25.

The more you know about Southwest’s luggage policies and fees the better off you will be when flying this airline.
