The Rakaia Gorge is located on the Rakaia River, which is in turn located in Canterbury in New Zealand’s South Island. The Rakaia River is one of the largest braided rivers in New Zealand, flowing hundreds of miles from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. For most of its length, the Rakaia River is very wide, with the Rakaia Gorge standing as the only part of the river where it is forced through a narrow area.
