The Vasco de Gama Bridge is located near Lisbon, Portugal, spanning the Tagus River. The bridge is the longest bridge in Europe and the ninth largest bridge in the world, at a total of 10.7 miles in length. It opened in 1998, with a purpose of alleviating traffic on Lisbon’s other major bridge, the 25 de Abril Bridge. The bridge is named after famed Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama.
