Often referred to as “the most photographed lighthouse in America,” Portland Head Lighthouse draws an average of one million visitors per year. George Washington directed that the lighthouse be built in 1787 and construction was completed by 1791, and despite several technological upgrades throughout the years, the lighthouse remains largely the same as it was. Portland Head Lighthouse stands 80 feet off the ground and 101 feet off the water.
