The Maldives is island country located in the Indian Ocean, about 435 miles southwest of Sri Lanka. Originally inhabited by Buddhists in the 3rd Century BC, the Maldives would eventually change hands between several European powers before finally gaining independence in 1965. While the country was relatively unknown to tourists as little as forty years ago, the Maldives now relies on tourists to come and enjoy its famous beaches and stunning scenery.
