With rooms starting at $1,000 a night, not everyone afford to stay at the Paris Ritz, but most people can swing a drink at the hotel’s famous Hemingway Bar.
This is the same bar that Hemingway liberated from the Nazis.
Hemingway, who if memory serves was covering the war for Collier’s, clambered on the roof of the hotel–he was carrying a Sten gun–fired off a round, and brought down a clothes line. He also took two prisoners, a couple of elderly German ordinances who had been left behind doing the laundry. He then made a sweep through the cellar, picking up a few Mouton Rothschilds on the way, and finally ended up in the bar, on the rue Cambon side, ordering a round of dry Martinis for all present.
Oh yes, I almost forgot. Hemingway being Hemingway, he announced that he was “personally liberating the Ritz,” and then sat down to do some serious drinking with Colonel David Bruce, later U.S. Ambassador to France.
The Bloody Mary is said to have been invented at the Ritz bar and the Hemingway’s martinis are the stuff of legend. The bar also has an excellent selection of single malts as well as beers from around the world. Cocktails can cost as much as E23, so be prepared to nurse yours if your budget is tight.
The Hemingway, which underwent a massive restoration a few years back, has been restored to its former glory with the addition of a bust of Hemingway and a wall full of photographs taken by him.
These days the bar is overseen by a legend in his own right, Colin Field, who was named best barman in the world in 2001 and is the creator of many cocktails. If you are traveling solo, Colin will see to it that you’re not lonely,and introduce you to the bar’s other patrons. But if you’d prefer to be alone, he’ll see that you’re not disturbed.
