For Americans, bullet-trains are an anomaly. They’re common in the western-world, awesome, and hi-tech. However, unless an American has traveled overseas, they’ve likely never seen one, let alone experienced the thrill of riding via high-speed rail. Below, are listed a number of these high-speed rail services, as well as a few actual bullet trains that have warranted themselves a place in history.

ETR 200

ETR 209

The very first bullet-train in the world was not built by the French, nor the Japanese. It was built by the Italians. The project began in 1934 and used the latest technologies. The train cars themselves were developed with a wind tunnel to maximize aerodynamics. The train, which entered service in 1937, was electric and could reach a top speed of 80mph. It was designed to handle speeds of almost 109mph, but the pantographs (the devices that connect the train to its power lines) could not handle the higher speeds. In its time, the ETR 200 was also considered the most comfortable train in the world. It acquired the world mean speed record in 1939.

Tokaido Shinkansen

Tokaido Shinkansen 300 series

While the ETR 200 is the world’s first bullet train, one could say that the Tokaido Shinkanzen is the world’s first contemporary bullet train. The project began construction in 1959 and opened in 1964. When service began, the trains would travel at 130 mph, but that number jumped to 135mph only a short time later. The route runs between Tokyo and Shin-Okaka. Today, this bullet train holds the record as the most heavily traveled high-speed rail route in the world. It should also be noted that the term “bullet train” itself comes from a literal translation of the Japanese phrase “dangan ressha” which has been the nickname for these trains since they were originally suggested all the way backing the 1930’s.

Nozomi Shinkansen

Nozomi

The fastest bullet-train service now operating on the Shinkansen high-speed rail network is the Nozomi. The trains, which commenced service in 1992, reach a speed of 186mph. Nozomi trains also make fewer stops, which adds to their overall travel speed. Over its history, the Nozomi Shinkansen has actually used 3 different series of trains, the 500, 700, and the newest N700 series. It is predicted that by 2011 the service will exclusively use N700 series trains, which happen to be the fastest.

Beijing–Tianjin Intercity Rail

Beijing–Tianjin Intercity Rail

If you’re looking to ride the bullet train with the fastest operating speed in the world, this is it. The Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Rail currently runs at a speed of 217 mph. The train is actually capableof operating at 245 mph, but the Chinese slow it down for safer normal operation. The rail commenced service in late 2008 just in time for the Beijing Olympics. A number of events for those Olympics were also held in Tianjin, making the brand new bullet train quite a convenience.

TGV

Train à Grande Vitesse

The “Train a Grande Vitesse” is France’s high-speed rail service. The trains’ start to stop average speed of just over 173 mph is the current world record. Development took place during the 1970’s and service began in 1981. The French bullet trains proved so popular that the network was expanded and then emulated by several other countries in Europe including Germany, Belgium, and Spain. The French themselves, however, had been inspired by the Japanese. Today, the TGV is the second most popular bullet train service in the world. The most popular being the Shinkansen in Japan.

V150

V150

This is it. The fastest conventional train in the world. Unfortunately you won’t be able to ride it. The V150 was a specially modified TGV train put together specifically for the purpose of conducting tests and breaking the world record. In April of 2007 it reached a speed of 357 mph.

TAV

Treno Alta Velocita - TAV

As it all started in Italy, bullet trains are finally making their triumphant return to their homeland. The Treno Alta Velocita SpA is an entity created for the development and construction of Italy’s new high-speed rail network. The operations of this new high speed rail network will be brought to match European rail standards. The network will also connect with neighboring high speed rails such as the ones in Germany, and France. Construction is currently underway with new segments opening throughout the next several years.

JR-Maglev

jr maglev

This could be the future. The JR-Maglev is Japan’s experimental magnetic levitation train system. The project has been in development since the 1970’s, so there is no telling when the trains may actually be put into general operation. As the name suggests, unlike conventional trains, which run on wheels, the bullet trains of the JR-Maglev system hover on a frictionless magnetic field. Suffice to say, the trains are fast. How fast? They’re the current world record holder for the fastest non-conventional train. In 2003, one of these trains reached a speed of 361 mph.

United States Air Force Rocket Sled

Click here to view the embedded video.

Sure they’re not a train, but when you’re talking about “high-speed rail”, you simply have to mention rocket sleds. Why? Because of their sheer speed. The world land speed record is currently held by a rocket sled. It’s top speed? Mach 3? No. Try Mach 8.5. That’s 6,416 mph, or almost 107 miles every minute. This was achieved by a four stage rocket attached to a sled on a set of rails at Holloman Air Force Base on April 30, 2003. Obviously this particular rocket sled was unmanned. The fastest manned rocket sled ever launched reached 635 mph, which is still quite fast.

Plans have been underway for quite some time for a bullet train in America. If the funds can be found, it looks like there may finally be one built in California. Until that train becomes a reality though, Americans will just have to travel to Europe or Asia to experience one of the best methods of travel in the world.

Japan isn’t a huge country, but it’s long and skinny, so there are often quite large distances between the cities you might want to visit. By far the best way to get around Japan quickly is to use the Japan Rail network, which includes the famous shinkansen or bullet trains, as well as other fast trains – but if you just buy the tickets you need each time, it will cost a small fortune.

Which brings me to the Japan Rail Pass – a great deal for tourists wanting to see a lot of Japan in a limited time. The most important thing to know about a Japan Rail Pass is that you have to buy it before you arrive in Japan. In general, you must be visiting Japan as a tourist to be able to use the pass – that is, you can’t buy one if you’re living in Japan temporarily.

You can buy a Japan Rail Pass for either 7, 14 or 21 days of use, and they are valid on shinkansen and other JR trains across the country, with a couple of exceptions and rules, but generally they are useful everywhere – and they are certainly good value. For example, the cost of the 7-day pass is less than a return ticket from Tokyo to Osaka, which is about the minimum trip any tourist visiting Japan would make.

Pint's from Oktoberfest

One mistake many people make is to assume that Oktoberfest will be running throughout October. In fact, it finishes on the first Sunday in October, which means it is often mostly in September – for 2009, it runs from September 19th to October 4th. There are around six million visitors to Oktoberfest each year, and recent statistics show that they drink around 7 million liters of beer. There are fourteen main beer tents to choose from, including the Hofbräu-Festzelt, the Löwenbräu-Festhalle and the largest, the Winzerer Fähndl. There is also a Weinzelt offering many kinds of wine if beer isn’t really your thing. Then again, if beer isn’t your drink, you probably shouldn’t aim to be in Munich at Oktoberfest time!

If you’re not quite ready to go this year, then it might be worth hanging on until 2010, when the Munich Oktoberfest will celebrate its 200th birthday – presumably there’ll be extra beer flowing instead of birthday cake.

If you ever get the chance to visit Boston, Massachusetts, you’ll be delighted by the historic charm and modern flourish embodied in one of America’s favorite cities. Here are five things to do during your visit that will give you a sense of the city and let you have some fun at the same time:

Boston Duck Tours: The “duck boats” used for these tours of Boston by land and water are refurbished amphibious landing vehicles from the WWII era. Your tour on the Duck Boat will take you past many of Boston’s famous landmarks on your way to the portion that makes the tours so much fun: your tour concludes with a splash as your Duck Boat takes to the Charles River for a floating view of the city.

The Skywalk at Prudential Center: Take a short elevator ride to the top of the city and enjoy a clear view of the entire city from the viewing deck at The Prudential Center, one of Boston’s skyscrapers.

Walk The Freedom Trail: A walking route through Boston’s most famous historic areas includes many of the city’s historic landmarks. The Freedom Trail is a great way to learn about the role Boston played in the American Revolution and many of the events that have shaped the city into what it is today.

Visit The USS Constitution: If you have any interest in boats or how historical nautical battles were fought, “Old Ironsides” is a must-see attraction. Following a recent $7 million renovation, the USS Constitution has been restored to her pre-1812 condition and offers tours year-round for visitors who want to visit the old battleship.

Catch a Baseball Game at Fenway Park: If you spend any amount of time in Boston, you’ll soon discover that her residents are extremely passionate about sports. Fenway Park is the home of Boston’s famous baseball team: The Boston Red Sox. It has been said by many that a perfect summer evening is one spent watching the Red Sox beat the New York Yankees from the Green Monster.

As a passenger on an Alaska Airlines flight it is important to be aware of baggage restrictions, luggage charges, and carry on luggage policies. These details will determine how you pack for your trip, and what you do when you arrive at the airport.

Alaska Airlines is one of the only airlines that allow passengers to check their first bag free of charge. More and more airlines are charging for every checked bag, but Alaska Airlines is fighting the temptation of following suit. That being said, they do charge for additional baggage. The second checked bag is $25, and each bag over this will be assessed a fee of $100 each.

Alaska Airlines also charges for oversize and overweight baggage. A bag is considered oversize if bigger than 62 linear inches and overweight if heavier than 50 pounds.

Alaska Airlines allows each passenger to carry on one bag as well as one personal item. A carry on bag can measure up to 10″ H x 17″ W x 24″ L. A personal item can be classified as a purse, laptop computer, or briefcase. At least one item, either your carry on bag or personal item, should be placed in front of the seat in front of you.

It is important to keep these basic restrictions, policies, and fees in mind if you are going to be flying on an Alaska Airlines flight in the near future.

When traveling on all British Airways flights each passenger is permitted to carry on two pieces of baggage. This includes one bag, as well as one smaller item such as a purchase, laptop case, or briefcase.

Of course, there are size restrictions that you must follow when it comes to your carry on bags. They include:

1. The size of your standard bag may not exceed 22×17.5×9.85 inches. This is plenty big enough for most carry on bags.

2. Your carry on luggage may not weigh more than 51 pounds. Additionally, you must be able to lift your bag into the overhead bin without the help of another party.

If you are traveling with an infant you will be able to carry on an additional bag full of items that may be needed during the flight including food, formula, and toys.

Remember, if you are not flying on British Airways all the way to your destination you need to check with the other airlines to ensure that they have the same or similar carry on luggage policy.

As a passenger of a British Airways flight it is important to be aware of the carry on luggage policy, and to follow these guidelines down to every last detail.

In today’s day and age almost every airline charges for luggage. This is definitely the case with British Airways. Before you book a ticket on a British Airways flight it is important to be aware of the fees that you may incur. After all, you may be able to save yourself some money by choosing a different airline or at the very least packing smart.

At this time, British Airways allows each passenger to check one bag free of charge. This is more than many airlines can say, but after this first bag you need to know what you are going to face. Any checked baggage over your one free piece will be charged an additional fee. Each passenger is allowed to check up to 10 bags. Fees are fixed and based on the length of your trip. For a longhaul trip the fee is £90 per bag or if paid online, £72 per bag. For a shorthaul trip the fee is £35 per bag or £28 per if paid online.

Additionally, British Airways also imposes fees for luggage that is overweight and/or oversize. Bags that are heavier than 51 pounds are charged at a rate of £25 GBP per bag.

British Airways may allow you to check one bag without a fee, but there are times when you may need to pay extra money in order to get your luggage to its destination.

If you are flying British Airways it is important to be aware of the heavy baggage fees that you may face. Of course, if you are smart about the way you pack your luggage you can avoid these fees. While this is not always possible, it is a goal that you should have. Why pay to check heavy baggage if you can avoid this?

Any bags that weigh more than 51 pounds will be assed a heavy baggage fee of £25 GBP. Bags that weigh more than 70 pounds cannot be accepted as checked luggage. In this case, you will have to make special arrangements with British Airways to determine whether or not you can add this bag to the flight. You will want to get in touch with the airline at least 24 hours before departure to set up special arrangements.

British Airways does charge fees if you need to check heavy baggage. While they may not charge the highest fee in the industry, you need to be aware of this nonetheless. It is better to know what to expect than to be surprised when it comes time to check-in. Chances are that you can avoid heavy baggage fees if you pack with these guidelines in mind.

If you are booked on an Alaska Airlines flight you should be aware of their luggage policies. While every policy may not affect you, there is a good chance that many of them will change the way you pack your bags.

Fortunately, Alaska Airlines allows each passenger to check one bag free of charge. This is contrast to many airlines which have begun to charge for every checked bag. That being said, if you need to check a second bag you will be faced with a fee of $25. For bags three through six a fee of $100 is assessed, and for seven or more $150.

Overweight and oversized baggage policies also apply. Each checked bag should be 50 pounds or lighter. Bags between 51 and 100 pounds will incur a $50 fee. Any bag weighing more than 100 pounds must be shipped via air cargo. Baggage dimensions should not exceed 62 linear inches. For bags between 63 and 80 inches a fee of $50 will apply. Those 81 to 115 inches will be assessed at a rate of $75.

Being aware of these luggage policies will make it much easier for you to plan your trip and to get along when you arrive at the airport. If possible, pack your bags to avoid excess charges.

It is important to be aware of British Airways baggage restrictions, luggage charges, and carry on luggage policy before booking a trip on this airline. They have recently implemented changes to their policies, and all passengers need to follow these guidelines.

When you are traveling to the United Kingdom, Europe, United States, Canada, South America, Caribbean and Mexico, you are allowed to check one bag for free of up to 51 pounds and 62 inches when adding the height, weight, and length.

Any items over your one free piece will be charged an excess baggage fee. Each passenger is allowed to check up to 10 pieces of luggage. Fees are fixed and based on the length of your trip. For a longhaul trip the fee is £90 per bag or if paid online, £72 per bag. For a shorthaul trip the fee is £35 per bag or £28 per if paid online.

British Airways also charges an additional fee for luggage that is overweight or oversize. This is based on a standard of 51 pounds and 62 inches when adding the height, weight, and length.

On all British Airways flights each passenger is allowed to carry on two bags. This includes one standard size bag, as well as one smaller bag such as a purse, briefcase, etc.

British Airways baggage policies are a bit more complicated than other airlines. That being said, you still need to know what you are up against so that you can properly pack and prepare for your trip.

Many airlines are cracking down on the number of bags that a passenger can check, as well as the weight of each piece of luggage. Delta is no different, and if you are flying this airline you need to be well aware of the fees that are associated with checking heavy baggage.

When flying in the United States, bags weighing between 51 and 70 pounds are assessed a fee of $90. Those weighing between 71 and 100 pounds are charged at $175 per bag. Anything weighing more than 100 pounds is not permitted to be checked. If traveling outside of the United States, bags weighing between 51 and 70 pounds are charged at a rate of $150 each with those between 71 and 100 encountering a fee of $300.

As you can see, Delta is very strict when it comes to the weight of the baggage that passengers can check. If you are worried that your bag may weigh more than 50 pounds it would be in your best interest to check on this before you head to the airport. If you don’t, you may be surprised when you are charged a fee of up to $300.

When flying British Airways you are allowed to check one piece of luggage free of charge. This is a decent deal considering the fact that many airlines are now charging for all baggage. That being said, British Airways luggage policies are not quite this simple. You must be aware of policies surrounding additional bags, as well as those that are overweight or oversize.

Any piece of baggage in addition to the first one will be charged a fee. Each passenger is allowed to check up to 10 pieces of luggage. Excess baggage fees are fixed and based on the length of your trip. Longhaul trips come with a fee is of £90 per bag or if paid online, £72 per bag. For a shorthaul trip the fee is £35 per bag or £28 per if paid online. One of the nice things about British Airways is that they do offer a discount of 20 percent if you pay the fee online. For most, this is well worth the time; especially if you are checking several additional bags.

British Airways also charges extra for oversize and overweight bags. This is based on a standard of 51 pounds and 62 inches when adding the height, weight, and length. Bags that are heavier than the standard are charged at a rate of £25 GBP per bag. To go along with this, it is important to know that bags over 70 pounds cannot be accepted as checked luggage.

Now that you are aware of the British Airways luggage policies you should have an easier time planning your trip and expected time at the airport.

When flying on an Alaska Airlines flight you need to be aware of the carry on luggage policy. This may allow you to skip the baggage checking process and the fees that go along with it.

Alaska Airlines allows each passenger to carry on one bag as well as one personal item. This may not sound like a lot, but for many people it is more than enough to get to their destination without having to check a bag.

Carry on bags are not permitted to be larger than 10″ H x 17″ W x 24″ L. In most cases this should be plenty big enough. To go along with this, you are also allowed to carry on a personal item which can be a purchase, laptop computer, briefcase or something similar. At least one of these items should be stowed beneath the seat in front of you.

Certain items do not count towards your carry on limit. They include strollers, coats, hats, umbrellas, assistive healthcare devices, child seats, and reading material. If you are unsure of what you can and cannot bring on board, call the airline in advance.

Being aware of Alaska Airlines carry on luggage policy will make your flight much more enjoyable, and hopefully less expensive.

When you carry on your luggage you can avoid long lines and lost time at the check-in counter. Of course, you need to be aware of Continental’s carry on policy before you move forward with this. There are some items that you are allowed to carry on, as well as others that must be checked.

Carry on bags must meet the following requirements set forth by Continental:

1. Bags must not exceed 45 linear inches when adding the length, width, and height.

2. Bags are not permitted to weigh more than 40 pounds.

Continental allows passengers to carry on one bag and one personal item. Personal items can include the following: purse, briefcase, camera case, laptop computer, personal entertainment device, or other similar items.

Personal aid items such as canes, braces, and wheelchairs are also permitted to be carried on if the passenger is dependent on them for their safety. If traveling with an infant, one item, such as a diaper bag, stroller, or other type of child seat is permitted.

If you keep Continental’s carry on luggage policy in mind you may be able to reach your destination without having to check any bags. Imagine the time and money that this would save!

All Delta passengers are permitted to carry on one personal item as well as one bag. That being said, there are restrictions that you need to be aware of. If your items do not match the restrictions set forth by Delta, you will have to check them in the belly of the plane.

Your carry on bag is not permitted to weigh more than 40 pounds. To go along with this, it cannot exceed 45 inches when adding the length, width, and height. The final restriction to be aware of is that the bag must fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin.

Delta also allows you to carry on one personal item. This can include laptop computers, purses, briefcases, diaper bags, cameras, etc. To go along with this, you can also bring aboard a jacket, food, medical devices such as a cane or wheelchair, and one bag of duty free items.

In addition to airline restrictions, passengers must also follow TSA regulations. For instance, no more than 3 ounces of liquid or gels can be carried on.

While Delta is not nearly as strict with their carry on policy as many other airlines, you must still be aware of the restrictions that are in place.

The question of whether or not US Airways charges for luggage has become more and more common as of late. As of July 9, 2008, US Airways does charge certain fees for luggage. That being said, you need to know if these fees apply to you and whether or not you can get around them.

The first bag that you check will be assessed a fee of $15. If you need to check one additional bag it will come with a fee of $25. Bags three through nine will be assessed a fee of $100 each. This policy applies on all flights to and from Latin America, Canada, and the Caribbean as well as flights within the United States. Passengers traveling to and from Asia or Europe are exempt from these fees.

Bags that weigh 50 pounds or less will be charged at the rates detailed above. Those between 51 and 70 pounds are assessed a first bag fee of $65, a second bag fee of $75, and a third through ninth bag fee of $150. Bags between 71 and 100 pounds are assessed a first bag fee of $115, a second bag fee of $125, and a third through ninth bag fee of $200. Bags weighing more than 100 pounds are not accepted.

Bags that are larger than 62 inches (length + width + height) will be charged a fee of $100. Any bag that is larger than 80 inches must be sent via Sports Express. If you are unsure of how to ship a bag of this size, contact the airline in advance to make special arrangements.

As you can see, US Airways does charge for luggage. It is important to be aware of these fees before booking your ticket and/or heading to the airport.

Delta recently updated their luggage policy. For passengers flying this airline in the near future, it is very important to be aware of these policies and how they will affect your trip. As you know, every airline is different when it comes to their luggage policy. The more you know before you leave for the airport the more enjoyable your trip will be.

When traveling within the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, you are allowed to check one bag free of charge. If traveling outside of these areas each passenger can check two bags without incurring a fee.

Each bag must weigh less than 50 pounds, and may not be any larger than 62 inches when adding the length, width, and height. If you must check a bag that is heavier or larger than these restrictions, you will be faced with an additional fee of up to $300.

Delta recently put many of these restrictions in place. If you are flying on this airline you will want to consider your destination, the number of bags you are checking and their size. All of these details are important features of Delta’s overall luggage policy. Avoiding mistakes will make the check-in process less stressful.

Are you booked on a Continental flight? Do you need to check heavy baggage? If so, there is a good chance that you will incur an overweight baggage fee. While this is an extra cost to you, it is something that many people have to deal with when flying.

On a Continental flight you are allowed to check bags that weigh less than 50 pounds without being charged an additional fee.

If your bag weighs between 50 and 70 pounds you will be charged at the rate of $50 per piece. For this reason, you would be much better off making sure that your bags weigh less than 50 pounds before you head to the airport.

Bags that weigh more than 70 pounds are not allowed to be checked. If you are worried about this you can either reduce the weight of your luggage, or get in touch with Continental to determine the process for transporting your bag.

If you need to check heavy baggage Continental will charge you an additional fee. This is known as an overweight bag fee. You should do whatever you can to avoid these fees. If this is not possible, you will want to be aware of these excess charges before arriving at the airport.

Flying US Airways means that you may be assessed a heavy baggage fee. This is something that you want to be aware of before you depart for the airport. You can save yourself a lot of money in fees by simply following the guidelines set forth by the airline.

US Airways allows each passenger to check one bag up to 50 pounds for a fee of $15. If your bag weights more than this limit you are going to run into heavy baggage fees. Bags between 51 and 70 pounds are assessed a first bag fee of $65, a second bag fee of $75, and a third through ninth bag fee of $150. Bags between 71 and 100 pounds are assessed a first bag fee of $115, a second bag fee of $125, and a third through ninth bag fee of $200. Bags weighing more than 100 pounds are not allowed to be checked.

Applicable weight fees are assessed no matter your flying status, or your departing and arriving city. The best way to avoid these excess fees is to weigh your bags after packing so that you know what to expect at check-in.
