The question of whether or not US Airways charges for luggage has become more and more common as of late. As of July 9, 2008, US Airways does charge certain fees for luggage. That being said, you need to know if these fees apply to you and whether or not you can get around them.

The first bag that you check will be assessed a fee of $15. If you need to check one additional bag it will come with a fee of $25. Bags three through nine will be assessed a fee of $100 each. This policy applies on all flights to and from Latin America, Canada, and the Caribbean as well as flights within the United States.  Passengers traveling to and from Asia or Europe are exempt from these fees.

Bags that weigh 50 pounds or less will be charged at the rates detailed above. Those between 51 and 70 pounds are assessed a first bag fee of $65, a second bag fee of $75, and a third through ninth bag fee of $150. Bags between 71 and 100 pounds are assessed a first bag fee of $115, a second bag fee of $125, and a third through ninth bag fee of $200. Bags weighing more than 100 pounds are not accepted.

Bags that are larger than 62 inches (length + width + height) will be charged a fee of $100. Any bag that is larger than 80 inches must be sent via Sports Express. If you are unsure of how to ship a bag of this size, contact the airline in advance to make special arrangements.

As you can see, US Airways does charge for luggage. It is important to be aware of these fees before booking your ticket and/or heading to the airport.
