If you are booked on an American flight, you need to be aware of the overweight baggage fees. There is a chance that you will have to deal with these fees depending on the size and weight of your luggage. If you are aware of these fees beforehand you can avoid them by packing your bags appropriately.
Overweight bags will be assessed a fee based on their total weight. Luggage weighing between 50 and 70 pounds are subject to a fee of $50. If they get any bigger, and weigh between 70 and 100 pounds, each one is charged a fee of $100. Anything heavier is not permitted to be checked. For bags in excess of 100 pounds, the best thing to do is call American Airlines in advance to see if there is anything you can do to get your bag to the proper destination.
If your bag weighs more than 50 pounds there is a chance that you may also be charged an oversize fee. These fees come into play if your bag is 62 inches or larger (length + width + height.)
Overall, American does charge for heavy baggage. If you can avoid these high fees you will be much better off in the long run.

I usually pack right at the limit and pack a smaller empty fold up bag just in case I need to move items around. I also make sure to ship home my souvenirs and shopping exploits. Shipping may or may not cost more, but it gets the items out of my way and I can get it insured by he postal service etc. Plus I get to open everything and get excited all over again as I relive my travels at home.
American is also planning to unbundle their amenities so that we can begin to pick and chose what we what on each flight. I think this is good because I don’t want to pay for things I am not going to use on every flight.
