Orlando may be located in the middle of the state, but you don’t have to give up on the idea of a beach vacation in order to see Disney World. Cocoa Beach, located along Florida’s east central coast is just an easy hour’s drive away. The Space Coast, as that area is called, is a world away, however, from the hustle and bustle of central Florida.
What to See in and around Cocoa Beach
Cocoa Beach is known for its long stretches of hard, white sand and its excellent sports fishing. In addition, the area boasts several attractions, such as:
- Kennedy Space Center – Home to the Space Shuttle and the Kennedy Center Visitors Complex, which houses an IMAX Theater, a variety of space artifacts, and a variety of rockets and space hardware. If you’re lucky enough to be in Florida at the right time, you can stand on the beach in Cocoa Beach and watch a shuttle launch.
- Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge – Located just north of Cocoa Beach, this 100,000 acre preserve is home to over 1000 species of plant life, 300 different kinds of birds, and 31 species of mammals. Admission is free. Note: the refuge is closed on the days preceding a shuttle launch.
