You’ve made the choice to travel with your baby or toddler. Sounds daunting, but it needn’t be. The most important thing to keep in mind, however, is that babies and kids are not small adults. Instead, they are a whole other entity with needs and habits completely different from even school-aged children. Here, for the benefit of your sanity and the consideration to fellow travelers, a few tips on airplane travel with the little ones.

  • Make travel plans far in advance, if possible. This way, you can request a window seat for your child
  • Purchase a separate seat for your baby. Despite the inclination for parents to want to hold their babies during a flight, it’s a guarantee that both parent and child will need a break at some point. A baby may sleep more soundly in her car seat (secured into the airplane seat) rather than in the arms of a talking, fidgeting parent. Of course, purchasing baby a seat is a more sound choice for safety reasons as well.
  • Take extra clothing for both you and the child. Messes and accidents happen – even on vacation. With extra clothing on hand, you can feel more relaxed knowing that if a spill or a bout of motion sickness happens, you and your little one can easily be refreshed.
  • Bring an assortment of dollar store treasures. There is no need to spend a bundle on expensive new toys to keep your child occupied in flight. Kids love kitschy dollar store toys as much, if not more. And since the price is right, you can afford enough surprises to keep you child occupied for hours.

Airplane travel with children can be tricky if you’re ill-prepared, but planning ahead can make all the difference – for both parent and child.
