Parents.com has named the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey California the best aquarium in the U.S. for kids. The Web site checked out more than 60 aquariums around the country for their survey.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium, located along the California coast, about two hours south of San Francisco, was created in 1984 in an old Sardine factory at the water’s edge. The almost 200 exhibits include over 35,000 marine animals and plants, with lots of interactive features, such as push buttons and other touchable things.

Highlights of the Monterey Aquarium include Splash Zone, a 7000-square foot hands-on play and learning area for children 9 and under; a 28-foot high kelp forest (pictured above); the jelly fish exhibit; and the giant octopus exhibit.

The Monterey Aquarium is open 10am to 6pm daily except for Christmas Day. The Aquarium stays open until 9pm on Saturdays and Sundays during the summer. Admission is $24.95 for adults, $22.95 for seniors and teens, $15.95 for kids 3 to 12, and free for children under 3. Visit the Aquarium’s Web site for more information.
