When you think of winter in Alaska, do you think of fur-cloaked residents, holed up in their homes? Well, think again. Parts of Alaska, such as Anchorage in the south-central part of the state, enjoy surprisingly mild winters (by Alaska standards) and up to 10 hours of daylight in the late winter months.
One way to enjoy the Alaska winter is at the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous. This annual festival, held in late February, bills itself as the “Largest Winter Festival in North America.”
Events at the 10-day event, affectionately called the “Fur Rondy,” include dog-sled races, the running of the reindeer, ice-skating, an art show, snow sculptures, and fireworks. The 2008 event is February 22 through March 2.
The Fur Rendezvous began in 1935 as a way to bring the then-isolated community together during the winter. The carnival-like event was named for the region’s second-largest industry–fur trading.
