Sedona

For ideal weather, beautiful scenery and an artistic flare, Sedona tops the list for tourists. This small community in the heart of Arizona has been drawing tourists since the late 1800s, when soldiers from Camp Verde looked to the area as a respite from the heat and a treat for the soul. The astounding beauty was evident from the very beginnings with the magnificent red rock formations and the lush splendor that is Oak Creek Canyon.

By 1895, early entrepreneur Lou Thomas turned a cabin into a two-story hunting and fishing lodge. The cabin became quite popular: Zane Grey based his novel, Call of the Canyon, on the location. The novel was later turned into a movie and the area became even more popular with the rich and famous.

The city gets its name from Sedona Schnebly, the wife of Theodore. In 1901 the family arrived in the unnamed city and Theodore petitioned to get a local post office. The office was approved, but his chosen name Schnebly Station was denied. His second choice, Sedona, was approved. Theodore became the first postmaster of the area.

Modern tourists to the area are still awed by the natural beauty of the region and a thriving artistic community.
