Some of the most beautiful views of San Francisco Bay can be seen from the most famous prison in the country, Alcatraz. Alcatraz Island no longer houses inmates but the prison still stands stoically in the center of this infamous rock.
The now retired federal penitentiary is the highlight of a visit to Alcatraz. The prison operated from 1934 to 1963 and was home to many famous inhabitants like Al Capone and Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz. Personal audio tours through the prison give visitors an insightful look at the drama that occurred behind these locked doors.
Alcatraz has a rich history. The site of the first lighthouse and U.S. fort on the west coast, the island also was the site of the occupation by Native Americans known as the Indians of All Tribes. Since the prison was closed, the island has become a sanctuary for seabirds, reverting back to its earliest days when Native Americans dubbed the island Alcatraz, which means Island of the Seabirds.
