Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park in Orlando Florida offers guests top notch attractions such as Kali River Rapids, Kilimanjaro Safari and DINOSAUR. The latest attraction added to Animal Kingdom is a high speed; high excitement roller coaster named, Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain
Expedition Everest opened in April of 2006 and is a family thrill roller coaster type ride. The attraction is located in the Asia section of Animal Kingdom and brings riders face to face with the Abominable Snowman, or Yeti. The ride travels both forward and backwards – the top speed going forwards is 50mph, and 40mph while going backwards. The ride allows for the forward and backward motion by having two sets of rotating track segments. This steel coaster has two lifts and an 80 foot drop. At 199.5 feet, it is the tallest mountain feature at the Walt Disney World Parks (taller than Big Thunder Mountain, Space Mountain and even Splash Mountain).
Expedition Everest riders board the coaster designed to look like a refurbished steam train on their way to the base camp of Mount Everest. The story follows that riders are using a “shortcut” through a forbidden mountain that is guarded by the yeti. The legend of the yeti says that he is the protector of the mountain and opposes anyone visiting the area. The yeti itself is one of the most complex creatures ever created by Disney. At 22 feet tall, it was built to look extremely lifelike, which many riders can attest to.
Disney classifies this ride for families, as the height requirement is only 44”. Riders should be warned that smaller children might be frightened by the Yeti and by the high speed, twists and backward motion of the coaster. That being said, Expedition Everest is one of the best attractions at Walt Disney World. It is not unusual to see massive lines for this attraction. Do note that FastPass is available for this attraction and single riders can also experience this attraction quicker, using the single rider line.
Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World offers something for every member of the family. Younger guests enjoy the Camp Mickey & Minnie section of the part where they come face to face with Disney Characters. Guests looking for thrills will find it on Expedition Everest, and the DINOSAUR attraction.
