Each year, since 1962, the picturesque village of Niagara-on-the-Lake has hosted the Shaw Festival, a seven-month celebration of the works of British playwright, George Bernard Shaw and those of his contemporaries.
Niagara-on-the-Lake, located about a half-hour’s drive north of Niagara Falls, is the antithesis of the carnival atmosphere that surrounds the Falls.
This 19th century village on the shores of Lake Ontario, is filled with restored inns, quaint shops, and traditional Irish and Scottish-style restaurants.
The Shaw Festival, runs from April through mid-November each year. This year’s schedule includes 10 plays held in three theaters. Among the productions yet to run are:
- Hotel Peccadillo by Georges Feydeau and Maurice DeVallieres
- Saint Joan by Shaw
- Circle by Somerset Maugham
- Tristan: A Musical by Paul Sportelli and Jay Turney
- A Month in the Country by Brian Friel
- The Philanderer by Shaw
- Mack and Mabel by Michael Stewart
- The Kiltartan Comedies by Lady Augusta Gregory
- The Cassillis Engagement by St. John Hankin
- Summer and Smoke by Tennessee Williams
Tickets to the Shaw Festival range from $18 to $95. Tickets are available online, at the box office, or by phone. In addition, many of the local inns, such as the Prince of Wales, offer packages that include accommodations and theater tickets.
