The British Virgin Islands, located in the cerulean-blue Caribbean Sea, just east of Puerto Rico, are a British overseas territory consisting of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, and fifty other smaller islands and cays. None of the islands are particularly large, though, and Tortola, the largest island of the BVI, stretches a mere 12 miles long and 3 miles wide.

Their small size, combined with a truly idyllic location, allows the British Virgin Islands to wrap visitors up in all shades of the rainbow: light sapphire skies sweep out into the endlessly blue ocean; purple, pink, blue, and yellow flowers paint the landscape; red lobster and green salads decorate your dinner plate. Vacationing on the British Virgin Islands is truly an escape to paradise.

Tortola promises visitors lush green mountains to climb, fine white-sand beaches in which to bury your toes, clear blue waters in which to swim and snorkel, and harbors filled with beautiful and incredible yachts. When you walk down the streets, you’ll find that Tortola also has some of the best shopping in the BVI, offering products like local jams and spices, delicious rum, handmade jewelry, and local artwork. Dine oceanside on local fare like conch salad and spicy curries and then head out for a bit of local history at Callwood’s Rum Distillery or Fort George. Of course, Tortola is not only rich in manmade treasures, but in natural beauty as well: National Parks dot the island, taking the form of tropical rain forests, jutting cliffs, wild rock parks, and simply breathtaking flora.

Virgin Gorda, lying east of Tortola, is the third-largest, but second most-populated of the British Virgin Islands. The most popular of Virgin Gorda’s offerings are The Baths, located at the southern end of the island. The Baths truly embody the beauty of the BVI, with incredible granite rock formations peppering the beach, creating gorgeous grottoes that open up to the crashing waves and beautiful white sand. After you’ve finished luxuriating at The Baths, head to Gorda Peak, the North Sound, and Devil’s Bay, the three National Parks within the 8 square mile borders of Virgin Gorda.

Jost Van Dyke, to the east of Tortola, is home to only 200 year-round inhabitants. During your vacation here, you’ll slow down to Island Time as you explore White Bay Beach, voted one of the Top Ten Beaches in the World by Caribbean Travel & Life. Palm-lined coast greets incredibly white sand and the sun bathes you in its warm golden glow as you swim, snorkel, or simply walk the lengths of this startlingly beautiful beach.

Those visitors adventurous enough to travel out to Anegada will discover why the Spanish named it the “Drowned Land.” The island is completely flat, made entirely of coral, and hugged by turquoise water that retains its swimmer and snorkeler-friendly shallow depths far from the coast. Indulge in some beautiful 180-degree views at Pomato Point, where fine sand slips between your toes and blue skies and seas envelop you in their beauty. Snack at a beachside bar and indulge in your favorite water activities all day long before heading inland to dine on spineys, what some say are the best lobster in the world.

The British Virgin Islands are an exquisitely beautiful place to vacation, so purchase a travel book, book a flight, and head to a slice of British-owned paradise.
