If you’re a camper or a road tripper then a mini travel refrigerator might be just the thing to make your trips more comfortable and enjoyable, and you may actually even save a little money in the process.

There are a large variety of mini travel fridges on the market and each one comes with a little different shape and size than the other, but they all offer the convenience of cold food and beverages at almost any place, almost any time.

Look for a portable fridge that is a size that is not only convenient for travel, but one that will also hold a good amount of products, some of them have very small inside compartments and they aren’t really that useful. Generally the hard sided ones keep your perishables colder, but they offer less internal space, a soft sided travel cooler gives you a little more flexibility in storing items, but it generally doesn’t keep the products quite as cold.

If you want flexibility with your mini travel fridge or cooler, look for one that functions both as a cooler and a heater. Not that traveling with hot foods is a convenience that people typically need or want, but it might come in handy on the road, and it will definitely come in handy at those family pot lucks.

Another feature you’ll want to make sure that your mini travel refrigerator has is that it not only works with a standard household AC outlet, but that it will charge with your car, boat, or RV lighter as well. Some of the mini fridges are really not meant to travel but serve as a convenience for dorms or offices.

It’s the holiday season again and many people will begin their annual sojourn to visit family, or to escape family and/or the weather. Travel is typically not a great experience, getting there is but quite often the travel part can be incredibly taxing and irritating.

If you’re traveling and just can’t leave your jewelry behind, then a jewelry organizer may be the perfect travel companion for your trip. A jewelry organizer lets you store all of your valuable treasures, and costume jewelry as well, in one neat little pack.

Select a jewelry organizer that has a zipper or Velcro sealed pockets so you can seal your earrings and other small items inside so they won’t shake loose during travel. Do remember that most jewelry organizers are not secure or locked. If you’re traveling by air and worried about the sticky fingers of baggage handlers then leaving your good jewelry at home is probably the best idea, its always better to be safe than sorry.

In the age of booked baggage fees, packing light is where it’s at. Of course, in practice, keeping your bulky bag down to size isn’t so easy. Enter plastic, vacuum-tight travel bags, which help you pack more into less space.

Plastic packing bags come in two basic types: one that requires a vacuum to suck the air out, and one that only needs a bit of muscle to seal. For serious travelers, I always recommend the second option – after all, who carries a vacuum around with them when they’re traveling?

The idea is simple: fill your plastic packing bag as full as possible, per its directions, and then squeeze out the extra air. As you do so, you items inside will be compressed, thus turning your four-shirt stack into the size of just one folded shirt.

Compressible packing bags generally come in three sizes — small, medium, and large — though small and medium are usually all you’ll need, though if you’re heading somewhere cold, you’ll want large bags for coats or bulky sweaters. Be sure not to pack hard, sharp objects in your bags — no combs, razors, or travel appliances — as they may rip the bag or break the seal.

Okay this is absolutely a must have. A friend of mine was on assignment in Michigan (of all places) and was in a car with a GPS system that featured the voice of Billy Bob Thornton ala Slingblade, uhmm-hmmm.

Turns out that you’re not stuck with the saccharine and generic voice that comes with your GPS system, you can customize them to suit your personality or to shock and amaze your friends. Most receivers come with some voices built into the system so you can choose between friendly male or friendly female voices. Some companies let you download new text-to-speech voices so you can get just the right effect for your situation or find the voice that makes you melt.

If you have a TomTom system you’re lucky because you get access to all of Navtones voices, which keeps expanding regularly. You can expect to pay somewhere between $5.95 and $12.95 per voice. The higher priced voices typically belong to celebrities while the lower prices are characters such as Witch Waytogo and Bubba.

Garmin also offers alternative voices but they’re no where near as extensive as Navtones and don’t feature any celebrities. Although one can only assume that they’ll be boosting their repertoire in the near future as well.

When I was a little girl, my parents had a strict bedtime for me. When that time came around, it was lights out, no excuses. Luckily for me, I had a secret weapon at my disposal: my portable book lamp. Diving under the covers, I would read into the wee hours of the night — usually around 9:30 or so — hardly ever running down my 50,000-hours of use travel lamp. Today, so many years late, my portable book light is still one of my favorite accessories, and its uses have grown many-fold.

Portable book lights are great for the obvious: whether it’s shared hotel room, train, plane, bus, or car travel (provided you’re not the driver), these little lights will enable many hours of nighttime reading without disturbing your fellow passengers. In addition, though, these multi-purpose tools can be used as small flashlights, laptop lights, or even to help you fit a strange key into an unknown keyhole.

There are so many book lights on the market today, but if you’re just buying your first, I’d recommend an inexpensive, tiny version. This kind is generally small enough to fit in your pocket and has an impossibly-long battery life: you can get this version for just $5.
