Changes are in the air and you can feel them when you step outside. That brisk fall breeze is creeping in and most of your travel destinations are going to require that you pack some sort of jacket or sweater to keep you warm. Unfortunately, this is a strange time of year to travel because the daytime hours in most places are warm enough that you’ll want some summery clothes as well. You don’t want to take two sets of clothes but you don’t want to be stuck without the items you need to be comfortable.

Have you ever dreamed of enjoying a refreshing gelatto under the Italian sun, running with the bulls in Pamplona, or participating in a Japanese tea ceremony while soaking up culture and learning a language? If so, then participating in a language school is an ideal vacation choice for you.
Surprisingly affordable, studying abroad is a growing travel trend. Courses are available around the world: Spanish in Buenos Aires, Japanese in Tokyo, Russian in St. Peterburg, and Arabic in Cairo.
This travel option offers myriad benefits that you may not have considered previously. Spending several weeks in a foreign city gives you the chance to soak up the real culture, not just the typical tourist attractions. A homestay is almost always optional with language study, and living with a local family gives you fantastic insight into the everyday workings of your host culture. You will eat typical foods, learn how your family lives, and create relationships that will last a lifetime.
When you study abroad, you’re typically treated to 20 hours per week of intensive language courses and invited to participate in school-sponsored cultural activities. You and your classmates will not only learn how to conjugate verbs, but will also salsa dance in Costa Rica, prepare sushi in Japan, and cheer at a soccer match in Spain. You won’t just be an outside observer, but instead a participant in a fascinating new culture.
I can tell you from firsthand experience that a language and cultural study can be life changing. When your host family meets you at the airport that first day, you may not understand a word they say. You may feel nervous or overwhelmed, even. But when you arrive home and they feed you a bit of food, you’ll feel your nerves start calm and the process will begin. By the time your stay is over, you’ll have some new language skills, a new world view, and a family that will always welcome you back with open arms. Can you say that about your average vacation?

The new Seven Wonders of the World have been selected and the results may be surprising to some. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) collected votes from about 100 million people from around the world who voted via Internet or telephone. UNESCO itself claims to have removed itself from the selection process by only claiming that they had no hand in the selection, only nominated wonders made the list. The only remaining ancient wonder, the Great Pyramids of Giza, retain their status as an original wonder of the world. The seven new inductees are Great Wall of China – ChinaStatue of Christ Redeemer – BrazilMachu Picchu – PeruChichen Itza pyramid – MexicoPetra – JordanColosseum – ItalyTaj Mahal – India. Some contention has come over the fact that monuments in three Latin American countries have topped the list while popular contenders Chile’s Easter Island, Greece’s Acropolis, and Britain’s Stonehenge didn’t make the list. But do not despair, as the founder of the competition, Bernard Weber, wants to begin the selection of another new seven wonders immediately. He envisions this contest as a way to encourage cultural diversity and preserve some of the greatest architectural monuments in the world. He also hopes that the recognition will inspire a sense of cultural pride in local peoples. The foundation Weber leads, New7Wonders, has vowed to use 50% of their net revenue to fund restoration efforts on a worldwide basis.

In cheesy movies, the guy trying to impress everyone always says something along the lines of that he always rents the convertible and he always flies first class. We laugh because we figure these luxuries seem silly in comparison to their cost. And when we get the offer to upgrade ourselves, we might think about it but we usually pass on by because it doesn’t seem necessary. Maybe it’s not, but flying first class sure is nice.
