Los Angeles Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers are the local professional National Basketball Association team. The team began in 1970 but it was then the Buffalo Braves, they became the Clippers in 1978 when they moved to San Diego where they stayed until 1984. It was in 1984 that the Clippers finally moved to Los Angeles but they continue to have problems achieving a winning season.

Staples Center

The Los Angeles Clippers call Staples Center their home. This multi-purpose sports arena is located in the downtown Los Angeles area. The arena is designed to accommodate basketball, ice hockey, arena football, and concerts. The arena opened in 1999 and cost approximately $375 million and measures 950,000 square feet and can seat up to 20,000 people. It is the only arena that is called home by five different professional sports franchises.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers are another National Basketball Association team located in Los Angeles. Unlike their cohorts, the Lakers are the current NBA Champions and have had a winning history. But like the Clippers the Lakers got their start in another state, founded in 1946 in Detroit Michigan the team then moved to Minneapolis where they earned the nickname the Lakers. It was in the 1960-61 season that the Lakers adopted Los Angeles as their home and the adjustment was rocky as they lost all of their shots at the finals in the ‘60s. Their winning streak began in 1972 and soared through the 80’s with such noted players as Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy and Coach Pat Riley. In the 2000s the streak continued with Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant and Coach Phil Jackson.

Staples Center

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the region’s professional Major League Baseball team. Although the team has been in Los Angeles since 1958 they actually originated in Brooklyn New York in 1883 and went through a number of name changes before being named the Brooklyn Dodgers. Stadium issues were the reason the Los Angeles Dodgers moved from their east coast home and at the same time the New York Giants moved to San Francisco for similar reasons. Believe it or not, there are still a lot of people in Brooklyn and the east coast who want the team back despite their 50 year history in Los Angeles.

Dodger Stadium

The Dodgers call Dodger Stadium their home and have since their move from Brooklyn in 1962. The stadium is currently the third oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball and is the largest ballpark in seating capacity at 56,000. In the off season of 2005 major renovations occurred to the park which included new seats and repairs to the concrete structure. In 2008 a $500 million project was announced that would add a museum, shops and restaurants and green space. The park is pushing the celebration of its 50th year and looking forward to the next 50.

Los Angeles Galaxy

Los Angeles Galaxy is the local professional soccer club and a member of Major League Soccer. The team is known for its successes and is the second most decorated club in the league. The LA Galaxy has won the MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup two times each. Their biggest news lately is the signing of superstar David Beckham and his reported potential worth with the team of $250 million. It’s sure that as long as Beckham is on the team their popularity will grow and attendance will be good.

Home Depot Center

The LA Galaxy calls the Home Depot Center home but this multi-purpose stadium located on the campus of California State University houses two other major soccer teams in the region. Designed specifically for soccer the stadium cost approximately $150 million to build and seats 27,000. Being only the second facility designed specifically for soccer the stadium has hosted the national soccer teams for training camps and matches and held the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the 2003 MSL All Star Game and the MLS Cup in 2003, 2004 and 2008.

Los Angeles Kings

The Los Angeles Kings are a part of the National Hockey League. Founded in 1966 the team has struggled with victories, having won their division only once in 1990-91. In 1988 the best player in the league and quite possible the most famous hockey player of all time, Wayne Gretzky, was acquired by the Kings. Initially Gretzky was a boon to the team scoring 168 points on 54 goals and 114 assists in his first season. They climbed up the ladder of success culminating in the Kings first and only regular season division title in the history of the franchise. Unfortunately Gretzky became disillusioned with the team and publicly stated that he wanted the team to boost their forward skills or he wanted to be traded, in 1996 Gretzky was traded.

Staples Center

The Los Angeles Kings call Staples Center their home.

As a side note the Los Angeles Avengers were the area’s arena football team but in 2009 the team folded. Since its inception in 2000 the team had done quite well and was involved in the American Conference wildcard playoffs in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2007 and they won the American Conference Western Division Championship in 2005. But after nearly a decade the team has been terminated.

Franklin Park Golf Course/ William J. Devine Municipal Golf Course

The Franklin Park Golf Course, otherwise known as the William J. Devine Municipal Golf Course is the second oldest public golf course in the United States. The course opened in 1896 and is part of the Olmstead Emerald Necklace, a chain of parks throughout the city of Boston. The course is steeped in golf history as the first person to win an American professional golf match, Willie Campbell, became the first head professional at the William J. Devine Course. Bobby Jones, who brought golf to the forefront in the United States considered this his home course and practiced here regularly during college. And the preeminent golf architect, Donald J. Ross, redesigned the layout at the William J. Devine Course. This 18 hole course works on a first come first serve basis Mondays through Thursdays and takes tee times for Fridays, weekends and holidays. Rates are very reasonable and you can rent carts, pull carts and even clubs if you’re traveling and forgot your sticks.

George Wright Golf Course

The George Wright Golf Course is another Boston golf course that can claim Donald J. Ross as its architect. In fact the course is considered one of his greatest designs. But Ross isn’t the only architect that can claim bragging rights on this stunning course. In the 1920’s Ross was commissioned to design the course but after the stock market crash the course was left behind. But in 1932 an associate of Ross’s, Walter Irving Johnson took up the challenge with great difficulty and ingenuity. The 18 hole course also work on a first come, first serve basis and takes reservations on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. There are private golf outings that close the course from time to time so you may want to call to make sure they’re open. Rates are reasonable and there are carts, pull carts and clubs for rent if you are interested.

Tournament of Players Club of Boston

The Tournament of Players Club of Boston is a fairly new private club in the Boston region. But being new doesn’t mean it doesn’t have the chops, it’s been named one of the Top 10 Best New Private Clubs in the U.S. by Golf Digest. TPC Boston features an award-winning championship layout that was originally designed by Arnold Palmer but was redesigned in 2007 by Gil Hanse and Brad Faxon. The Tournament of Players Club of Boston is host to the Deutsche Bank Championship which is a playoff for the FedEx Cup. The last information I could find on the price of membership was several years ago and then it was $62,500 so there’s a hefty price tag for those who want to belong to this exclusive club but for some I’m sure it’s worth it.

New England Country Club

In Bellingham Massachusetts the New England Country Club has become a popular family destination as the course is one of those rare gems that provides a challenge for good players yet offers enough breaks for new players to really enjoy it as well. New England Country Club offers memberships but you don’t have to be a member to play the course. As with most semiprivate golf courses the fees are a little bit higher than most public courses but typically the amenities and course is in better shape and more meticulous than a public course.

Squirrel Run Golf Course

Squirrel Run Golf Course is located on the south shore of Boston and is a good course for everyone from beginners to the more experienced players in your foursome. There are a few challenging water holes, especially number 13, that can frustrate or impress anyone. This public 18 hole course is fairly inexpensive and has electric carts, pull carts and rental clubs for those people who forgot theirs at home.

Fresh Pond Golf Course

Fresh Pond Golf Course is a short nine hole public golf course that runs through Cambridge’s Historic Fresh Pond Reservation, just outside of Boston. The course claims to be environmentally pleasing, but aren’t all golf courses? It’s a pretty tricky short course with water hazards on four of the holes and two par fives that should probably be sixes, if there were par sixes. During the weekdays Fresh Pond Golf Course takes guests on a first come first serve basis but there are weekend tee times that you can make o Friday. If you have a membership you can make the tee time further in advance. There are a handful of events throughout the summer, most of them in June, which cause course closures so be sure to check online or call before you make the drive. A round at Fresh Pond Golf Course is very reasonably priced and if you want to double up and play 18 holes (2 times around) the price is even more reasonable. Carts, both hand and electric, are available as are clubs if you need a rental, although the charge for a rental set does seem rather high at $20.

Boston Golf Club

The Boston Golf Club is another private golf course located just outside of Boston in Hingham Massachusetts. This 18 hole course was designed by Gil Hanse who describes the course as terrain that varies and rolls and pitches in every direction. The Boston Golf Club was chosen as the 3rd Best New Private Court in the Country by Golf Digest in 2005 and is currently ranked 46th by Golfweek in the Modern Top 100 in the United States. I couldn’t find information on this private course’s membership fees so I’m guessing it’s very exclusive. But that’s just what some people want so feel free to give the pro a call to talk fees.

The Boston Red Sox play in the American League Eastern Division of Major League Baseball and have done so since 1901. The Boston Red Sox were one of the original eight teams in the American League and were the champions of the first World Series in 1903. The team continued its strong start by winning four more championships before 1919. But then almost went 90 years without another win, until 2004 when they finally won another World Series. The unusual name of the Red Sox didn’t come about until 1908 and was originally the Boston Red Stockings, a reference to their socks. Stockings was shortened to Sox. Prior to this there was no official team nickname.

Since 1912 the ball club’s home park has been Fenway Park. Fenway Park is the oldest Major League Baseball stadium still in use. Baseball has once again become so popular in Boston that in 2008 Fenway Park broke a record for the most consecutive sold out games at 456. Remarkably the park has also seen some of the lowest lows with attendance at two games in 1965 each under 500. Although Fenway Park has been used by the Boston Red Sox since its creation it is hardly the same park that it was in 1912. But despite rumors to the contrary, the park continues to stand and will be the home of the Red Sox indefinitely.

New England Patriots – Gillette Stadium

The New England Patriots belong to the American Football Conference in the National Football League. Originally dubbed the Boston Patriots the name changed in 1971 when the team moved their headquarters to just outside the Boston city limits. Until 2001 the New England Patriots only made two appearances in the Super Bowl and lost both of those chances at a championship. But the team redeemed itself in the years between 2001 and 2005 when it won three Super Bowl championships.

Back in 1970 when the Boston Patriots became the New England Patriot they moved to a new stadium in Foxborough Massachusetts. The original Foxboro Stadium was replaced in 2002 by the CMGI Field, later renamed Gillette Stadium, which seats a remarkable 68,756 people. The field originally sported natural turf but a rainstorm in 2006 deteriorated the grass enough that a game loss was blamed on the surface and so artificial grass, or FieldTurf, was installed and the team has seemed to thrive since.

When it comes to professional basketball the Boston Celtics do the city proud with their 17 NBA Championships, more than any other NBA franchise. Their biggest winning streak happened between 1957 to 1969 with 11 championships in that period. Unfortunately the team went through some rough times in the mid 1980s which continued until 2007. With their final championship win coming in 2008 the team appears to be headed toward another winning streak. In addition to their many wins, the Celtics made a notable contribution to the game and race relations in 1950 when they became the first franchise to draft and African American player, Chuck Cooper.

The Boston Celtics call TD Banknorth Garden or TD Garden home. TD Garden has had a variety of names over the years including Boston Garden, FleetCenter and Shawmut Center. When constructed the new stadium was to be located slightly north of the original Boston Garden, which meant only nine inches between the buildings. Although the Celtics call the center home it also several other sports teams and hosts a variety of events throughout the year.

The Boston Bruins have been part of the National Hockey League since 1924 when they became the first United States based expansion franchise. They are one of the Original Six and currently hold Stanley Cup championships, the second most for an American team. The name Bruin is an old English word which means brown bears and can be found in children’s folk tales. The first game, against the Montreal Maroons, was a win but the rest of the season was pretty much a bust, leaving them in last place. The team struggled but in its third season it proved itself by winning its first Stanley Cup.

The Boston Bruins spent much of its existence playing in the old Boston Garden, but once the TD Banknorth Garden was built, in 1995, they moved to their new digs. The TD Banknorth Garden is often referred to as simply the TD Garden and began construction in the early 1990s to replace Boston Garden, which had fallen into a state of disrepair and was in desperate need of either a huge renovation or a new center entirely. The new TD Garden opened in 1995 and not only serves as home to the Bruins and the Celtics but also hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year.

New England Revolution – Gillette Stadium

The New England Revolution is Boston’s major league soccer team. Established in 1995 the Revolution, or the Revs, are the only time in the entire MLS that have had every one of their games broadcast on television. The team didn’t have a very good start and they didn’t experience a win in a major event until they beat FC Dallas in the 2007 U.S. Open Cup. Although they hadn’t had a win until then they had come close and appeared in major cup finals four times previously.

The New England Revolution plays in Gillette Stadium when at home and have since the arena was built. Prior to that they used the nearby Foxboro Stadium as their home base.

Boston Cannons – Harvard Stadium

The Boston Cannons is the local professional men’s field lacrosse team. The team is fairly new having joined the Major League Lacrosse field in 2001. The team has undergone a change as they were originally in the American Division and in 2006 they switched to the Eastern Conference. In 2009 the economy hit MLL hard and the number of teams dropped from 10 to 6 so all of them will be playing in the same conference.

Harvard Stadium serves as home to the Boston Cannons since 2007. This field has a storied history as it was built in 1903 and was built for Harvard University’s football team in just under five months. The Boston Patriots used the field back in 1970 and several music performances have been held on the grounds, in fact it was Janis Joplin’s last live venue before her death. Harvard Stadium has the distinction of being the first permanent stadium for intercollegiate athletics in the United States.

The Cleveland Browns got their start in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference. The AAFC soon folded and in 1960 the Browns joined the NFL. While the Browns were with the AAFC and the NFL they were quite successful, winning four championships in each league. But in 1970 the NFL and AFL merger changed things and the Browns joined with the American Football Conference and have not won a championship since, despite having three shots at this target. In fact, Cleveland has yet to qualify for the Super Bowl and has not hosted a Super Bowl, making it the only NFL city to have done neither.

The Cleveland Browns Stadium is situated on Lake Erie and can hold more than 73,200 people. The stadium is designed specifically for the Cleveland Browns football team, but the field was built big enough that they can also host international soccer matches. The stadium also hosts numerous sporting events and music events. Unlike many major sports stadiums, the city chose not to sell the naming rights but instead they sold the naming rights to the four entrances.

In 2007 they won an Eastern Conference Championship but still have never won an NBA Championship. But some of the glory has to go to head coach, Mike Brown, who has received the NBA Coach of the Year honors in addition to leading the team to a 39-2 home record for the 2008-2009 season, one win short of the best all time home record.

The Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland is called The Q and serves as a multipurpose arena in addition to providing the Cavaliers a home base. The Q also houses the Lake Erie Monsters, the Cleveland Gladiators, other teams no longer in competition and it serves as a location for music concerts and wrestling competitions.

Cleveland Indians / Progressive Field

The Cleveland Indians are in the Central Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. The team has been in existence since 1901 and have won two World Series championships in 1920 and 1948. Although the team initially was not known as the Indians they adopted the name after the 1914 season by a media decision. Prior to 1914 the team was known as the Lake Shores, the Cleveland Blues, and several other nicknames. In 2007 the team saw some bright spots as the division champions but eventually lost their bid for the 2007 World Series. The 2008 season was not that impressive and found them winding down with a 81-81 record at the end of the year.

Progressive Field and the Quicken Loans Arena form the Gateway Sports and Entertainment Complex in Cleveland, Ohio. The ballpark was originally known as Jacobs Field and still holds the nickname The Jake, it was officially dubbed Progressive Field in 2008. Between June 12, 1995 and April 4, 2001 the park set a record by selling out 455 straight games which prompted the team to retire the number 455. But this record was surpassed by Fenway Park on September 9, 2008 when they hit 456 straight sellouts.

Cleveland Gladiators / The Quicken Loans Arena

The Cleveland Gladiators are an indoor Arena Football League who moved to the Cleveland area in 2008. Unfortunately their 2009 season has been cancelled but they are pretty firm in stating that they will be resuming play again in 2010. The team originally began as the New Jersey Red Dogs in 1997, then in 2001 they became the New Jersey Gladiators, immediately before the start of the 2003 season the team was moved to Las Vegas where it stayed until the latest move to Cleveland. When the Gladiators are playing they’ll play at The Quicken Loans Arena or The Q.

Lake Erie Monsters / The Quicken Loans Arena

The Lake Erie Monsters also call The Quicken Loans Arena, or The Q, their home. This ice hockey team is a member of the American Hockey League and only began playing in the 2007 to 2008 season. The team is the minor league affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche NHL team.

Cleveland City Stars / Middlefield Cheese Stadium at Bedford City Schools

The Cleveland City Stars are a professional soccer team which was founded in 2006 and plays in the USL First Division, which is the second tier of the American Soccer Pyramid. The shift to the first division is fairly recent as the team is still the USL-2 champion for the 2008 season.

The Cleveland City Stars plays at the Middlefield Cheese Stadium at Bedford City Schools which was previously known as Bearcat Stadium. The stadium resides in Bedford Ohio and is a multi-purpose stadium that seats about 5,000 spectators.

Although Cleveland has a history of losing teams this is really a misnomer as the teams are quite good, it’s just that none of them has been able to snag a championship title for several decades. Who knows, you may be in on the record breaking season as it’s bound to happen sooner or later.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles are members of the East Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Eagles made it to the superbowl in 1980 and then again in 2004 but both times they were defeated. The ball club was established back in 1933 to replace the Frankford Yellow Jackets and were originally called the Blue Eagles. In 1943 WWII took a lot of the strong, young men away from sports pastimes or careers and in response Philadelphia and Pittsburgh merged their two teams into the Phil-Pitt Eagles or the Steagles, but this merger only lasted the one year.

The Philadelphia Eagles football team currently plays at Lincoln Financial Field, or The Linc as it’s called by Eagle fans. The stadium completed construction in 2003 and hosted its first even, a soccer match, in August. The stadium currently hosts a variety of sporting events and even concerts.

The baseball team, the Philadelphia Phillies have a had a bit more success than the Philadelphia Eagles and are the 2008 World Series champions and also earned that title back in 1980. The Phillies belong to the East Division of Major League Baseball’s National League. Unfortunately the Phillies have also had more trouble than the Eagles as they have the dubious distinction of having lost the most games of any team in the history of Major League Baseball. But one reason their losing streak is so long is because they are the oldest continuous, one-name, one-city franchise in all of American professional sports. Founded in 1883 they team has played in many different stadiums, its latest being Citizens Bank Park.

Citizens Bank Park began hosting the Phillies in 2004 where the first game was played on April 12th. The stadium features real grass, angled seating, rooftop bleachers and a state-of-the-art design. It appears as if the Phillies will be able to spend many years at this stadium.

Philadelphia Flyers

The ice hockey team, the Philadelphia Flyers, is a part of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. As part of the 1967 NHL Expansion they team is not considered one of the original six teams, but they were the first time outside of that group to win the coveted Stanley Cup in both 1974 and 1975. Even though they’ve had five more turns at the cup they have yet to win it again. But, Stanley Cups aside, the Flyers have an all-time winning percentage of 0.578 which is the second best in the entire NHL (at the end of the 2008/2009 season).

The Philadelphia Flyers share the Wachovia Center with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Philadelphia Wings and Philadelphia Soul. Prior to being called the Wachovia Center it was known as the CoreStates Center and the First Union Center. This indoor arena was built in 1996 at a price of $206 million and in addition to being home to many different sports teams it hosts the area’s biggest concerts including 46 sold out Billy Joel concerts and 45 sold out Bruce Springsteen shows.

Philadelphia Wings

The Philadelphia Wings are a professional box lacrosse league and a part of the National Lacrosse League. The team was established in 1987 and was one of the original four teams in the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League, which was later renamed the Major Indoor Lacrosse League, and then changed to its current name. The Philadelphia Wings are the only franchise to have played all 21 seasons of professional box lacrosse in the same city and they’re holders of the most titled in the combined league history. Fans can catch a box lacrosse game at the Wachovia Center.

Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers, another team who regularly plays at the Wachovia Center, is frequently called the Sixers. This professional basketball team is the NBA’s oldest franchise but they did not start in Philadelphia but Syracuse and they were not officially know as the 76ers but the Syracuse Nationals. In 1963 the team moved to Philadelphia and a contest was held to determine the new name. Walt Stahlberg suggested the winning name of the 76ers after the year the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia. Some famous 76ers are Charles Barkley, Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Hal Greer and Moses Malone.

Philadelphia Soul

The Philadelphia Soul is another addition to the Philadelphia professional football line up, but Philadelphia Soul is an arena football team in the Arena Football League. A relatively new team, the Soul began in 2004 as an expansion team for the Eastern Division in the National Conference. They team seems to be doing quite well as they won their first ArenaBowl championship in 2008. The team is co-owed by famed rocker, Jon Bon Jovi and Craig Spencer along with several other lesser owners. Games are played at the Wachovia Center primarily but if there is a scheduling conflict the team can be seen at the Wachovia Spectrum.

Philadelphia Union

The Philadelphia Union is a brand spanking new team in Philadelphia. In May of 2009 the name the Philadelphia Union was announced as the moniker of Major League Soccer’s 16th franchise. This addition to the city’s great sports teams is actually not a Philadelphia team as they’ll be playing in Chester at the Chester Stadium, a suburb of Philadelphia. In fact there’s a bit of controversy about the name as the city of Philadelphia seemed more than reticent to construct another sports stadium. Games won’t be played until 2010 although season tickets are already on sale.

Chester Stadium was built specifically for soccer, actually is still being built and isn’t expected to be completed until 2010. Chester Stadium will host the new Philadelphia Union and the Philadelphia Independence of the Women’s Professional Soccer organization. Panasonic will have a place of prominence in the stadium as it is one of the major contributors.

Believe it or not there are many more sports teams and locales in Philadelphia, for sports fans it’s really an incredible city.
It’s actually sort of amazing how many golf courses are packed into Long Island. So, if you’re looking for a golf getaway then Long Island is a great place to bring your clubs and hit the links. Use the following guide to help you pick which public courses best fit your parameters.

It’s actually sort of amazing how many golf courses are packed into Long Island. So, if you’re looking for a golf getaway then Long Island is a great place to bring your clubs and hit the links. Use the following guide to help you pick which public courses best fit your parameters.

Gull Haven Golf Club

Gull Haven Golf Club is located in the town of Islip and is a great little course if you are looking to squeeze in a quick round. This 9-hole executive course is not a serious challenge as there are no water hazards and the fairways are flat and open. The only real difficulty on the course are the greens which are pretty little targets and take a bit of accuracy. Gull Haven is perfect for an executive looking to squeeze in a quick round, or a family with some inexperienced players.

Hamlet Wind Watch Golf and Country Club

Hamlet Wind Watch Golf and Country Club sits on one of the highest points in Long Island, giving you an incredible view of the area surrounding it including the entire north shore. This club is semi-private and is one beautiful place to play. The daily fee golf course is open to the public and is treated just as carefully as the rest of the holes. In addition, if you’re into the latest gadgets, you’ll love the Pro Link GPS system which is currently only offered at a handful of Long Island courses. This is sort of a luxury course with a great range and a grill and clubhouse you’ll want to spend some time in so this is a destination course that can take a good portion of the day.

Bergen Point Golf Course

Bergen Point Golf Course is located in West Babylon and offers straight up golf without any of the frills of some other courses. This is a place to go if you want some serious golf and nothing else. Many of the holes feature water hazards and the challenges are many. But it’s not the most luxurious course around. A good place to go if you’re looking for a quick challenging round.

Mill Pond Golf Course

Mill Pond Golf Course is a real delight for the public as the course has a decidedly private feel. This Scottish links style course is a bit of a change if you’re not used to this type of golf, but it’s exciting nonetheless. While open fairways seem rather easy it’s the rolling hills and undulating greens that tack strokes onto your score. If you want to improve your game before you start, spend a little time getting used to the greens on the practice putting green. Located in Medford, Mill Pond is a great golf course for anyone looking for a links experience.

Crab Meadow Golf Course

Located in North Point, Crab Meadow Golf Course offers some incredible views which enhance the entire golf experience. The clubhouse has recently been renovated and it’s worth a stop if you need any supplies and The View Restaurant is a great stop for a post-round drink or sandwich. But if it’s really the golf you’re after you won’t be disappointed, the course is a good balance of challenge and some easy holes that make you proud of your ability. And the views can’t be beat.

Brentwood Country Club

Brentwood Country Club in the town of Islip was designed by Devereux Emmet in 1925. During this era hickory shafted clubs were common place so the holes were a bit shorter, which means you’ll have some pretty great scores if you’re using the latest in golf technology. Brentwood has the feel of an old country club in a small town, it’s welcoming, friendly and there’s some obvious pride that goes into the course maintenance. Definitely a great course for a relaxing day of golf.

Dix Hills Park Golf Course

Dix Hills Park Golf Course is a nice little course featured 9 holes with a par 31 for men and par 32 for women. It’s another great course to take a family to or to go if you have some inexperienced players in the group. There’s nothing intimidating here and the challenges are minimal so a relaxing round is almost guaranteed.

Spring Lake Golf Club

Located in Middle Island, Spring Lake Golf Club is a little treat for golfers. Conceived by brothers Charles, Herman and Fred Jurgens and designed by Charles Martin, the course was once 180 acres of family farm located in the beautiful wooded hills. The course was completed and opened in 1967 and offers golfers something that is hard to find in the golf world today, its still family owned and operated. The sense of commitment and dedicate is evident in everything around you at Spring Lake, the course is meticulously maintained, the club house is well appointed and the family is generous to have opened their beautiful land up to others. A rare experience that shouldn’t be passed over.

Rolling Oaks Golf Course

Rolling Oaks Golf Course is located in Rocky Point is considered an executive course but its more challenging than that with a par 65, several water holes and a swath of mature trees which define the course’s layout. The prices are extremely reasonable, even if you want to rent a cart and weekend rates are not much higher than the weekday fees. This is a great course to add to your list if you’re looking for something that fits a family with intermediate to advanced golf skills, just enough challenge for everyone.

Heatherwood Golf Club

Heatherwood Golf Club is open to the public but considered a sister course to the PGA championship course, Pine Hills. This par 60 course plays a little short but has its share of hazards and tricky turns, including some undulating greens. It’s a beautifully maintained course and will keep you occupied for a few hours, just don’t expect to get a lot of practice on your long game.

Long Island is a wonderful place for duffers looking to have a vacation jam packed with golf challenges. It’s also a good place for slipping out for a quick round in between business meetings or other sightseeing events. No matter what brings you to the area, Long Island has a round of golf that will somehow slip nicely into your schedule.

Winners of each day’s stage are given the coveted yellow jersey to wear the next year so it is clear to other competitors and viewers who is the current threat to beat. Competitors race in teams with an average of 20 teams of nine competitors in the race each year. Each year the race follows a different path but since 1975 the finish like has been on the Champs-Elysees in Paris. In 2009 the race will begin in Monaco and head southwest to Barcelone, then will continue northwest to Tarbes where contestants will be flown to Limoges. From Limoges they will continue on a northeast route until Colmar where then will then head south to Bourg Saint-Maurice, the route then winds around to Mont Ventoux and from there proceed northward to the finish in Paris.

The first Tour de France was created as a rivalry between a group that supported accused spy Alfred Dreyfus and those who opposed him. Le Velo, a local sports newspaper publicly supported Dreyfus and the editor of that paper had already organized a cycling event. The advertisers who disagreed with Le Velo’s political views started their own newspaper, L’Auto, and one of their young journalists conceived of a bike race that would trump the one sponsored by Le Velo. Originally the race was to cover five weeks in 1903 but this was just too much and not many people were interested. The race was cut down to 19 days and a daily stipend was offered to racers and 60 competitors showed up. The grueling race that could last into the night quickly captivated people and L’Auto’s circulation jumped.

The history of the yellow jersey wasn’t established in the first races, rather the first winner wore a green armband. Officially Eugene Christophe wore the first yellow jersey in 1919 but Belgian biker Philippe Thys claimed that he was asked to wear a yellow jersey in 1913 but refused as he felt it made him a target. There is no way to verify Thys’s story and it seems a little peculiar that the yellow jersey didn’t crop up again until 1919. By 1924 Italian rider Ottavio Bottecchia rode so well that he was able to wear the jersey from start to finish. In 1929 three bikers came in with equal times and all three were allowed to wear a yellow jersey the next day.

In addition to the oft seen yellow jersey is the green jersey which is given to the rider who earned the most points for sprints. There is a while jersey with red polka dots which is given to the King of he Mountains who is the first to crest designated mountains. The white jersey is for the best rider who’s age was under 25 years by January 1st of that year. And a prix de la combativite is awarded to the most aggressive rider of the day, instead of their normal race number printed in black on white they get a number that is white on red. Teams add the top three riders times and the winning team is awarded a new number that is black on yellow.

Lance Armstrong’s name has become synonymous with the race in recent years as he has one the most Tour de France races of any biker ever. His seven consecutive wins from 1999 to 2005 have ensured that he will go down in race history as one of the best, if not the best, ever to race the Tour de France.

Since Lance Armstrong has retired from the Tour de France Spain has held the title with the 2006 overall championship going to Oscar Pereiro, 2007 going to Alberto Contador and 2008 being taken by Carlos Sastre Candil. Sastre joined the new Cervelo TestTeam in the 2009 season and is doing quite well in races so far and may prove to be the man to beat.

One “new” aspect of the 2009 Tour de France is the team trail. This stage has been run before but not for years. It’s a 38 kilometer circuit around Montpellier and will serve as stage four. This is a very athletically demanding stage which typically puts up the biggest average speeds. It’s a pure flat stage so riders working together in the team will enjoy it the most but some people don’t believe this to be the case and dislike this stage greatly. Keeping a lead and keeping the team together in a pack is difficult and requires more than physical prowess. Which can be exciting for some team members but for those riders who are not really in it as a team sport but are looking to take one of the top rankings for themselves, this event and their team can hold them back and hamper their chances of winning.

The bike race itself isn’t the only thing to draw crowds, in fact a survey determined that 39% of the spectators that come out to watch the race in person actually are there to see the publicity caravan which happens before each stage of the race. The caravan was a marketing idea by Henri Desgrange, the race director in 1930. Major brands and companies could sponsor a vehicle to draw crowd attention to their marketing cause. Originally the proceeds from these sponsors were necessary so that a national team formula could be imposed and teams were provided with bicycles for each rider. Caravan participants woo the crowd by giving them samples of their products and boosting the fun and shock appeal of their presentation to garner the most attention. This 45 minute parade is a true highlight and shouldn’t be missed by any spectators of the live event.
Not your typical golf getaway, Philadelphia actually has a lot to offer both the novice golfer and the die hard duffer. So next time the rest of your foursome talks about heading to Arizona or Florida for a round, suggest a trip to one of Philly’s great golf courses instead.

Not your typical golf getaway, Philadelphia actually has a lot to offer both the novice golfer and the die hard duffer.
Cobbs Creek Golf Course

Cobbs Creek Golf Course carries the moniker of Sixty Best Municipal Golf Course in the United States from Golfweek Magazine. There are two 18 hole tracks at Cobbs Creek, Kara Kung and Olde Course. Cobbs Creek runs through the middle of the Olde Course coming in to play on seven holes, the first six giving golfers a great introduction to the water hazard. For an older course the length of the holes is a bit surprising and the 638-yard 14th hole is simply wicked. Built in 1916 by famed golf planner Hugh Wilson, Olde Course is a municipal course that goes that extra mile in making sure the public is treated to a really fantastic golf course. It’s sister course, Karakung is much newer having opened in 1989 but this course is just as challenging and long as the Olde Course.

Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) Golf Course

The Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) Golf Course in Philadelphia opened in 1940 and features a Florida style layout with wide open fairways and a basically flat terrain. At the FDR course it’s not the layout that’s the challenge but the winds. The course does run against some beautiful natural wetlands and has a canal that runs through the course and cross the signature 10th hole. Be prepared to lose a ball or two even though the fairways are wide and generous, 10 holes feature water hazards and one is apt to grab your ball.

Downingtown Country Club

Downingtown Country Club was designed by George Fazio and completed in 1967. Keeping to tradition when it comes to Philadelphia golf, Downingtown features subtle greens, interestingly shaped bunkers and open fairways with a rolling nature. At Downingtown it’s not about course trickery but rather about the pure athleticism of the golfer. This golf course is open to the public and the prices land in the mid range.

Hartefeld National Golf Course

The award winning Hartefeld National Golf Club was designed by noted course architect, Tom Fazio. Fazio included winding cart paths, breathtaking vistas, ferocious tree lines, terraced tee boxes, sculpted greens and dramatic elevations. Unfortunately, Hartefeld National Golf Club is not only one of the most challenging courses in the Philadelphia region it’s also one of the hardest courses to get on since it became completely private. If you want to play Hartefeld you’ll have to shell out some cash and become a member or find a member who will invite you along as a guest.

Bala Golf Club

A truly old golf course, Bala Golf Club was built in 1901 and has been giving duffers a good old fashioned challenge ever since. Designed by William S. Flynn the course is challenging and so mature it’s almost grandfatherly. Bala Golf Club is a premiere private golf course near downtown Philly, but only members and guests are allowed.

Island Green Country Club

Island Green Country Club is a public country club that not only is open to the public but welcomes everyone with open fairways. This 18 hole course was designed by Jim Blaukovitch and features an island green on the 11th hole. Established in 2001 this relatively new course is built in the links style with few trees but cleverly undulating greens. It’s a welcoming little challenge that everyone should enjoy.

Quartette Golf Club

If you’re anxious to get out on the links in Philadelphia but don’t have a lot of time, head over to Quartette Golf Club. This nine hole par three course is fairly easy offering few challenges but nicely aged and sure to satisfy that urgent need to get out and play a few holes before your next appointment.

Meadow Brook Golf Club

Meadow Brook Golf Club is one of the most popular clubs in the country for a nine hole course, and this nine hole course doesn’t think of itself as a lesser course. The fairways and greens are meticulously cared for by the greens crew, the bunkers give golfers a serious challenge and there are three par fives to challenge your long game. If you’re looking for a public golf course to hold an outing then Meadow Brook is a great place to start the search.

Bensalem Township Country Club

Bensalem Township Country Club was founded in 1960 and originally known as Cornwells Golf Club. Since then much has changed, the private club turned semi-private and then public, the property fell into disrepair, was considered for development and then saved and turned into a local public golf course. Today the 18 hole, par 70 course is open to the public year round and is a favorite for many locals.

Fairways Golf Club

Fairways Golf and Country Club is a public course that claims to have country club conditions. You’ll have to decide for your self, but this 18 hold public golf course is very popular and boasts bentgrass greens, tees, and fairways. Built in 1965 and designed by William Gordon the course features challenging bunkers and water hazards on 11 of their holes. Fairways Golf and Country Club is a great public course worthy of a closer look.

Laurel Creek Country Club

Laurel Creek Country Club offers the best in exclusive luxury where members get to experience a 71 par Arnold Palmer links style course featuring 14 lakes. In addition to the golf the Cabana Complex has a swimming pool, four Har-Tru tennis courts, a snack bar, there is a fitness center with personal trainer and the locker rooms come with steam and sauna. This is the cream of the crop when it comes to private country clubs but if this is what you’re looking for then Laurel Creek is really the way to go.

Keep Philadelphia on your list as you schedule your next golf outing because there are a multitude of courses to choose from easy to professionally challenging and municipal to exclusive private.

Located on a harbor, Baltimore is a city that has seen much of American history first hand. Visitors to the city will be struck by the modern beauty of this old city compounded with its national landmarks and active sports enthusiasts. But one thing that isn’t mentioned often about Baltimore but absolutely should be is the massive amount of wonderful golf courses that dot the city and surrounding area. If you’re headed to Baltimore be sure to bring your golf clubs and find time to squeeze in a round or two. Who knows, you may like the golf in Baltimore so much that you come back just to play.

Carroll Park

Carroll Park is perfect if you’re headed to Baltimore on business as this little executive 9-hole course is located right in the heart of the business district. Ask about their “replays” and you’ll be tempted to squeeze in a few rounds each day. Short, simple and convenient this course even has rental clubs if you didn’t bring yours along.

Clifton Park

Clifton Park is Baltimore’s first public golf course, built in 1915 on the grounds of Johns Hopkins’ summer mansion. Through almost 100 years the course has stood the test of time as the city has grown around it. It now offers duffers one of the best views of the city landscape. This course is a bit tricky as it was squeezed in on private lands and surrounded by out-of-bounds hazards. A challenging little course located in town which offers a bit more golf than Carroll Park, Clifton Park is worth a trip, and bring your camera for the views.

Diamond Ridge

Diamond Ridge in Baltimore is a rather open course with rolling hills and lush fairways. The course shares its new state of the art clubhouse with The Woodlands and together they make a couple of great rounds of golf. Designed by famed golf architect Ed Ault, Diamond Ridge offers a couple of unique challenges to golfers by giving them two distinctly different nines. The front nine is open and built in a links style and the back nine is tighter with more natural growth to impede your play.

Greystone

Greystone was designed by Joe Lee who has earned quite a name for himself as a course architect. This course is a prime example of his ability to mold the land without destroying its inherent beauty and his inner knowledge of the intricacies of golf. Noted as one of the best public courses in the state, Greystone features seven ponds, more than 80 bunkers, great rises and falls in elevation, and aged hardwood trees.

Forest Park

Forest Park was originally a 9-hole course but it grew into an 18-hole course which means it is basically two courses in one. The original course has a nicely wooded and aged landscape with tight fairways and rolling hills. The newer half of the course is more open and basically just newer, meaning it’s a bit easier. As most 9-hole courses that have expanded, the second nine is really an after thought and not as well planned. This course is fairly short but still packed with challenging holes, especially on the older half.

Longview

Longview golf course is a short little par 70 course packed with scenic views and elevated tees. Perhaps the biggest challenges at Longview are the ones designed by Mother Nature. In the 1980’s this course made national news as golfers were losing their balls to foxes. A den of foxes had amassed more than 1,000 golf balls as they’d run out and snag balls off the putting green.

Mount Pleasant

In the 1950-1960 era Mount Pleasant was quite the happening hot spot for professional golfers. Arnold Palmer earned his second American tournament win as a professional at Mount Pleasant in 1956. The classic design and the well conceived design offers a challenge to golfers of every skill level. The prices are incredibly reasonable for a course with this storied history and level of challenge in its architecture.

Pine Ridge

Pine Ridge is another Baltimore golf course that is popular among the professional crowd as Nancy Lopez won her second professional tournament there. It’s also been the home of several PGA and LPGA tournaments. This is the course to play if you want to get away from it all and enjoy the beauty and natural surroundings that make golf one of the best sports around. Located outside of the city itself, Pine Ridge is actually stunningly beautiful as its holes resemble fingers in the Loch Raven watershed area.

Rocky Point

Rocky Point butts up against the Chesapeake Bay and takes advantage of this waterfront location at every opportunity. Designed by Russell Roberts, this fairly short course is actually very challenging with unexpected elevation changes that seem to add yardage to this par 72 course. Rocky Point has won its fair share of accolades for area courses but it’s one of the best if you’re looking to spend time on the water.

The Woodlands

The Woodlands is another Baltimore golf course set amid aged hardwood trees that grace the edges of the rolling fairways and undulating greens. This course offers plenty of challenges for all levels of golfer as it was proclaimed by the architect, Lindsay Ervin, as his best design ever. Washington Golf Monthly has even dubbed it the best public course in the Baltimore suburbs. The new state of the art club house makes The Woodlands the perfect getaway golf escape.

This list of Baltimore golf courses just includes the public courses, there are many more private and semi-private courses that offer locals and visitors to the city a place to play. You can get a traditional links style course, tight tree-lined fairways and everything in-between. If you do your research you can even find an 18-hold course that features both styles at once. So remember to bring your golf clubs the next time you’re in the Baltimore area as the city has so much to offer professional and weekend duffers alike.

Baltimore Orioles

Debatably the most famous sports team to come out of Baltimore, the Baltimore Orioles are a storied baseball team that actually has its roots buried in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Originally the Milwaukee Brewers were established as a major league club in 1901, by 1902 they decided to change their location and moved to St. Louis and became the St. Louis Browns. This time they stayed a bit longer, but by 1954 they were again ready to move and found their home this time in Baltimore Maryland. This time the team assumed the name the Baltimore Orioles, which had been used previously for other local baseball clubs. The Orioles can lay claim to three World Series Championships in 1966, 1970, and 1983. The Orioles also produced several noted ballplayers which include Reggie Jackson, Jim Palmer, Frank Robinson and perhaps most notably, Cal Ripken, Jr.

Originally the Baltimore Orioles, in their 1954 concoction, used Memorial Stadium for their games. This was a happy union for the two noted sports names for many years, but in 1992 the new Oriole Park at Camden Yards became the official home of the Baltimore Orioles.

Baltimore Ravens at Memorial Stadium

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are another very notable team that comes from Baltimore Maryland. The Ravens are a fairly new team, having joined the National Football League in 1996 but immediately establishing themselves as a presence by winning the Super Bowl in 2000 and two division championships in 2003 and 2006. In their short history the Ravens have produced some well-known and successful players such as Vinny Testaverde, Ben Coates, Trent Dilfer, Deion Sanders, and Steve McNair.

In the beginning the Ravens shared Memorial Stadium with the Orioles and other local teams and the stadium, which had been known as the home to the previous incarnation, the Baltimore Colts. But by 1998 the Ravens had their own stadium with the Ravens Stadium at Camden Yards, but the name didn’t last long as M&T Bank acquired the naming rights in 2003 and the stadium was renamed the M&T Bank Stadium.

Baltimore Blast

If you’re a soccer fan then you’ve not doubt heard of the Baltimore Blast, but the name is a bit confusing. Initially the Baltimore Blast was a team that played in the first Major Indoor Soccer League. After having won the league championship in 1984 the team would not get a chance to repeat that performance as the Major Indoor Soccer League folded in 1992. A reincarnation of sorts happened in the summer of 1992 when Bill Stealey created the Baltimore Spirit soccer team and joined the National Professional Soccer League. In 1998 the Baltimore Spirit team was sold and renamed the Baltimore Blast and by 2001 it has rejoined a newly formed Major Indoor Soccer League. But this version of the Major Indoor Soccer League wasn’t meant to last either, in 2008 it once again folded and the Baltimore Blast is expected to join the new National Indoor Soccer League. Whew. After all that, if you’re still interested in seeing some professional indoor soccer, the Baltimore Blast plays its home games at 1st Mariner Arena.

Crystal Palace FC USA/Crystal Palace Baltimore/USA Eagles

Want more soccer? In 2006 the Crystal Palace FC USA, or more commonly known as the Crystal Palace Baltimore and sometimes known as the USA Eagles, was formed and became a member of the USL Second Division. Fairly new, this American professional soccer team seems to be learning from its mistakes and growing in skill and popularity. Currently this soccer team can be seen playing in the UMBC Stadium. In addition to serving as the team’s home field, UMBC Stadium also serves as the campus stadium for UMBC in Catonsville, Maryland and hosting many collegiate sporting events.

Baltimore Mariners

The Baltimore Mariners are an indoor football team with a rather interesting birth. Originally the Baltimore Blackbirds were Baltimore’s indoor football team, but the American Indoor Football Association expelled the Blackbirds for negotiating with another league. Since the American Indoor Football Association still held lease rights to 1st Mariner Arena so the Baltimore Mariners were formed as a replacement for the Blackbirds.

Baltimore Burn

Even more football fun can be had with the Baltimore Burn, a women’s American football team in the Women’s Football Alliance. Having started in 2001, the team was initially an expansion team but quickly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. To catch a women’s football game visit Mergenthaler Vocational Tech High School for home pairings.

Baltimore Nighthawks

You can hardly mention the Baltimore Burn without bringing up the Baltimore Nighthawks, a football team in the Independent Women’s Football League. These teams often mix it up so you may be lucky enough to catch a game with both of Baltimore’s women’s football teams. If it’s just the Nighthawks you’re looking for, they can be found playing in Brooklandville at Martin D. Tullai Field.

Charm City Roller Girls

For an unusual and unexpected night of sporting fun, try the Charm City Roller Girls, Baltimore’s only all girl roller derby league. In 2005 the Charm City Roller Girls started as just a few gals getting together at the roller rink two days a week, but quickly blossomed into an organized league with more than 890 women athletes. If you remember the roller derbies of the 1970’s you’ll be shocked to see that the sport is much different now. Less bloody and brutal that it was in the past, current roller derbies are very exciting and full of theatrical charm. Definitely an interesting way to spend an evening. When competing at home, the Charm City Roller Girls can be found at the Clarence “Du” Burns Arena.

In addition to having professional baseball and football teams, Baltimore is just chock full of exciting sporting opportunities for people looking to become involved in an athletic venture or for those who just wish to sit in on the excitement and enjoy a good game.

Warming the area with 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and winter temperatures averaging 68 degrees, it is no surprise that the Fort Lauderdale area is one of the best year-round vacation spots in the U.S. Even though August and September can pour the heaviest rains of the season, the rest of the year offers a perfect golf climate. It’s great when everyone in your vacation party enjoy the same activities, but even if you are the only golf enthusiast, Fort Lauderdale offers shopping, great dining, water sports and more. There is no question everyone will find something in this city to make it a great trip.

Coral Ridge Country Club started as the Forananda Golf Course, however, constructions was halted in 1929 when the stock market crashed. In 1954 Robert Trent Jones, renowned golf course designer, molded the partially built course to his specifications. His vision was for a truly challenging, championship course with a grander completion than the golf course and shop he opened with. Eventually the course came to include a clubhouse, tennis courts and swimming pool. This 18-hole course does require membership which means you’ll need to stop by the clubhouse for a guest pass. The course is rated difficult, just as Mr. Jones planned. It’s a par 72 course with 7095 yards and a 134 slope and a 74.1 course rating.

Lauderhill Golf Course, managed by Paula Tucker, opened in 1968. This public course is a 9-hole, par 3. It’s designed to provide a fun golf game for any skill level with 1200 yards of play. Green fees are extremely reasonable at $15.

Deer Creek Golf is and 18-hole championship course features 7,050 of golf play. Designed by Bill Watts and Arthur Hill, it is a new course just built in 2005. This public course is kept in tip-top shape and is rated with a complete 5 stars for maintenance by players with very high scores in all other areas. The fairways have been over seeded to obtain the best possible play. It’s just 10 minutes from Fort Lauderdale and 30 minutes to the airport. Play on Bermuda grass for a par 72, slope of 133 and rated 75. The real bargain are their twilight fees of $50 at this golf only course.

Hillcrest Golf and Country Club spans 6,903 yards with a par 72. Conveniently located, it’s just minutes away from I-95. The 18-hole championship course will surprise you with a tough finishing hole. You may find it a bit more expensive than some of the other public courses in the area at $99 on weekends. It holds a rating of 73 and slope of 129 but has a 25 tee driving range. It has more bunkers, 100, than any other Fort Lauderdale area golf course which will add some fun for the experienced golfer, while giving a bit of challenge to the beginner. After your morning round of golf, stop by the Island Green Bar and Grill for lunch. It has a great view overlooking the 18th hole while taking a peek at the game on their 42 inch plasma.

Arrowhead Golf Club is located in Davie, just 10 minutes to Fort Lauderdale. This Bill Watts designed course opened in 1969. The public course offers very reasonable summer rates at $34 for weekends, $26 during the week. Their twilight fees are $18 every summer day. There is 6,311 yards of green on this 18-hole course. It has a rating of 71, slope of 113 and a par 71 on full Bermuda greens. Enjoy their cocktail bar for a cold one after your game.

The Diplomat Golf Resort and Spa at beautiful Hallandale Beach. The newer public course, designed by Joseph L. Lee, opened in 2000. Check in to your room and feel like your in a luxury hotel with all the amenities especially their special spa. This is the perfect location for a couple when only one enjoys golfing as the other can enjoy a day at the spa. The 18-hole, par 72 course has a slope rating of 136, all on Bermuda. It is player rated highest in amenities, maintenance and difficulty with scenery and value also very high.

Pembroke Lakes Golf Course offers 6,555 yards of Bermuda greens. Designed by Howard Watson and opened in 2007, this new 18-hole course is a par 72, rated 71.1 and has a slope of 126. If you stop in for a round on a weekday morning, finish with lunch at their buffet. All is reasonably priced at Pembroke Lakes and you’ll receive great service on top. If Sunday is your golfing day, try their buffet after a round of golf. It goes until 2 pm.

The Club at Emerald Hills has been chosen as one of the U.S. Open sites, U.S. Amateur sites and U.S. Public Link qualifiers. This challenging course promises meticulously manicured greens on their 7,717 yard course. They’ve been voted “One of the Nations Top Golf Clubs” and “Excellent” by players in “America’s Top Golf Courses” in an ESPN survey. This 1969 course was designed by Bruce Devlin. Its rating is 74.6 with a slope of 142. After a round of golf enjoy a meal at their Restaurant Grille, open 11 am to 3 pm., lounge open until dusk. The excellent chefs are happy to book and cater an event for you in their banquet facility.

Built on a hilly former Civil War battlefield, one of the chief virtues of the Alfred Tup Holmes Golf Course is its location–10 minutes from the airport and close to downtown. The par 72, 18-hole public course opened in 1940. It was renovated last year and has a a course rating of 69.9 and a slope rating of 115.

Ansley Golf Club has two courses to choose from. In mid-town Atlanta you’ll find the convenient 9-hole course in Ansley Park. The other is an 18-hole rugged championship course located in Roswell, Georgia. The Atlanta 9-hole course has been rated in the top five national courses by Sports Illustrated.
This 36 par course is 3, 441 yards with a rating of 37 and a slope rating of 135.

Augusta National Golf Club must be mentioned first as it is the worlds most revered golf course. The Masters, played here every year, has made this course one of the most famous. An abundance of flora and fauna grow on this course, built on the former Indigo Plantation, with every hole named after a different species, Yellow Jasmine, Pink Dogwood, Chinese Fir, Carolina Cherry and so many more. Golden Bell is designated to the twelfth hole, the most challenging of the course.

This course is an 18-hole, par 72, 7445 yard course. It must be mentioned that membership fees are rather steep, touting a 300 member roster at any given time. However, if there is just one course in all of Georgia, perhaps all of the U.S., to request membership, it would definitely be the Augusta National Golf Club.

Bobby Jones, winner of the 1930 Open and Amateur championships of the U.S. and Great Britain, built Augusta National upon retirement. He once said regarding this course, “There isn’t a single hole out there that can’t be birdied if you just think. But there isn’t one that can’t be double-bogeyed if you ever stop thinking.”

Bear’s Best Atlanta Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, has been rated with five stars by its players. The best public course in the Atalanta area, was rated the “Top Ten Courses You Can Play in American” by Golf Magazine. The 18-hole course is open year round and is a public course with the luxury feel of a private one. It’s a par 72 course with 6,857 yards, a rating of 73 and slope of 140.

Bobby Jones Golf Course, another course built on a former civil war battle location, Peachtree Creak,. The championship golf course is just ten minutes from downtown Atlanta. This town is Bobby Jones birthplace, so it’s not surprising one of the best public courses holds his name. Truly a course for all players, the par 71 course offers the challenge of tightly placed greens with open fairways. For your convenience there is a chipping green, two indoor driving ranges and on site pro, Chris Knobloch. This 6,455 yard course is rated 68.1 with a slope rating of 119.

Brown Mill Golf Course has three small lakes located in its front nine creating interest and some water hazards. This par 72 is 6,600 yards with a sloping rate of 123. Close to downtown Atlanta, #12 is the signature hole with trees on the right and stakes on the left it has an uphill tee shot.
North Fulton Golf Course is smack dab in the middle of Chastain Park, the largest park in Atlanta. Regularly chosen Atlanta’s top public golf course, North Fulton, it boasts of the most difficult holes, in all of the city. The #18 tee shot leads you down a narrow fairway lined on ones side with a creek. The par 71 course is 6,570 yards with a slope of 126.

Cherokee Town and Country Club North is very well maintained. However, the facilities are what really stand out. They offer three practice greens, one let’s you practice on different bunkers found on the course. A great driving range and traditional club house make for a well rounded experience. This par 72, 18-hole course is 6,941 yards with a rating of 74.3 and a slope rating of 139.

Dunwoody Country Club has no two holes alike with each having it’s own unique set of challenges, making for what may be the most interesting golf game in Atlanta. The greens and fairways are first rate at this course. This 18-hole course runs 7,002 yards with a rating of 74 and a slope rating of 141. It offers a 40-tee driving range, but is a golf only facility.

It’s the middle of summer and the living is easy in southeast Michigan. The days are hot and dry–but not too hot. The fairways are manicured and the greens are a lush velvet. In short, it’s a perfect time to play golf in and around the “Motor City.” There are literally hundreds of courses, both private and public, in the Greater Detroit area. Below are a few of the highlights:

Belle Isle Park — This public, nine-hole course may not be the city’s most challenging, but it certainly has the best view. It’s located in the 985-acre Belle Isle Park, situated in the middle of the St. Clair River and boasts views of both the downtown Detroit and downtown Windsor (Ontario) skyline.

The Orchards Golf Club – This four-and-a-half star course is mentioned over and over again in golf magazines like Golf Digest and Golfweek. Located 30 minutes northeast of downtown Detroit in the town of Washington, The Orchards is a 525-acre community with an 18-hole, 7036-hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.

The Rouge Park Golf Club – This urban course first opened in 1923. A recent facelift has updated the course while keeping its unique aspects and tough greens. The 6262-yard, par 72 course is located in northwest Detroit.

Lakes of Taylor Golf Club — This city course is located just outside of Detroit in Taylor, Michigan. Opened in 1989, it’s received four stars from several of the major golf publications.

Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park – The Astros, Houston’s Major League Baseball team, are part of the National League’s Central Division. Although they’ve never won the World Series, they won the NL pennant in 2005. The Astros play at Minute Maid Park (formerly Enron Field), located in downtown Houston. The 40,950-seat stadium opened in 2000 and features a retractable roof, air-conditioning (when the roof is closed), and free WiFi throughout.

Houston Rockets at Toyota Center – The Houston Rockets are currently Houston’s most successful franchise. The arena, opened in 2003, seats 18,300 for basketball.

Today, on August 27th, The U.S. Open begins at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York. Held over a two week period, the U.S. Tennis Open will end on September 9, 2007, after determining the best player in the country.

Tennis fans flock to New York City during these two weeks, hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite players on the streets and catch an amazing set or two. This year, visitors and fans can look forward to a jam-packed schedule full of exciting matches, fantastic food, and trips to some of the most famous landmarks in the country.

The Schedule of Play will update on match times and the running scores section will keep you apprised of all wins and losses, especially the upsets. In fact, all tennis fans, whether in New York for the tournament or following the action from home, will find the U.S. Open’s Official Website of great help.

When you’re not hanging onto the edge of your seat, you’ll be out and about, exploring this famous city. Tourists can get overwhelmed in the Big Apple, but it doesn’t have to be that way for you. If you prepare in advance, decide where you want to go, and pick up one of the tourism maps that you find all over the city, in no time you’ll be climbing the Empire State Building, observing animals at the Bronx Zoo, moseying down Times Square, picnicking in Central Park, and getting some perspective at the Guggenheim. Now that’s what I call a win-win situation.
