In today’s day and age almost every airline charges for luggage. This is definitely the case with British Airways. Before you book a ticket on a British Airways flight it is important to be aware of the fees that you may incur. After all, you may be able to save yourself some money by choosing a different airline or at the very least packing smart.

At this time, British Airways allows each passenger to check one bag free of charge. This is more than many airlines can say, but after this first bag you need to know what you are going to face. Any checked baggage over your one free piece will be charged an additional fee. Each passenger is allowed to check up to 10 bags. Fees are fixed and based on the length of your trip. For a longhaul trip the fee is £90 per bag or if paid online, £72 per bag. For a shorthaul trip the fee is £35 per bag or £28 per if paid online.

Additionally, British Airways also imposes fees for luggage that is overweight and/or oversize. Bags that are heavier than 51 pounds are charged at a rate of £25 GBP per bag.

British Airways may allow you to check one bag without a fee, but there are times when you may need to pay extra money in order to get your luggage to its destination.

If you are flying British Airways it is important to be aware of the heavy baggage fees that you may face. Of course, if you are smart about the way you pack your luggage you can avoid these fees. While this is not always possible, it is a goal that you should have. Why pay to check heavy baggage if you can avoid this?

Any bags that weigh more than 51 pounds will be assed a heavy baggage fee of £25 GBP. Bags that weigh more than 70 pounds cannot be accepted as checked luggage. In this case, you will have to make special arrangements with British Airways to determine whether or not you can add this bag to the flight. You will want to get in touch with the airline at least 24 hours before departure to set up special arrangements.

British Airways does charge fees if you need to check heavy baggage. While they may not charge the highest fee in the industry, you need to be aware of this nonetheless. It is better to know what to expect than to be surprised when it comes time to check-in. Chances are that you can avoid heavy baggage fees if you pack with these guidelines in mind.

Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland, sits along the Chesapeake Bay. Established in 1729, it has a rich history, with many sites surving from the American Revolution, War of 1812, and Civil War periods. Below are just a few of Baltimore’s historic landmarks:

Fort McHenry. Located a short boat ride from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Fort McHenry is best known for its role in the War of 1812 when it successfully defended Baltimore Harbor from British attack. During this battle, the composer Francis Scott Key penned the song at this star-shaped fortress that would become America’s national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.” Visitors today can tour the ramparts daily from 9am to 5pm, except for Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. There is a modest entrance fee for adults. Children under 15 years old are free.

Carroll Mansion. The Carroll Mansion, located in Baltimore’s historic Jonestown neighborhood, was built in 1811 as the home of youngest daughter of Charles Carroll, the last surviving (and only Roman Catholic) signer of the “Declaration of Independence.” The three-story, red brick mansion is an excellent example of early 19th century Federalist architecture. Today, the house has been restored and is filled with period art and antiques and is open to the public year-round, Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4pm. Discounts are offered to seniors, military, students, and children.

The 186-foot Sloop-of-War was completed in 1854 and enjoyed 100 years of service to the United States Navy, fight the slave trade before and during the Civil War, running famine relief to Ireland after the war, and as a ceremonial ship at the Paris exposition of 1900.

Cancun, the bustling tourist mecca on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, offers a collection of beautiful beaches, exciting nightlife, and varied shopping opportunities. But, Cancun offers more than just sun, stores, and discos. Visitors to the resort area can be Mayan ruins, swim with the dolphins, and learn more about Mexican culture. Below are just a few of the things to see and do in Cancun:

Mayan Ruins. Long before Cancun was a playground for those from the US and Canada seeking to escape the winter weather, the Yucatan was part of a thriving Mayan community. Many of the buildings constructed during this time are still standing today. The closest to Cancun at the ruins at Tulum, along the Caribbean coastline south of Cancun, and those at Chichen Itza, deep in the Mexico jungle, about a three-hour bus ride from the resort area.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/69464277@N00/2489522472/"title="DSC_3361" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">
Trainers working with dolphins

Swim with the Dolphins. Swimming with the tourist-friendly, unique, and intelligent dolphins is an experience not to be missed. You can grab hold of their fin and let them pull you around the lagoon or just nuzzle up to them and pet their backs. Several operators offer this encounter. Among the best is Dolphin Discovery, located just north of Cancun. <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/2.0/"title="Attribution-NoDerivs License" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> <a href="http://www.photodropper.com/photos/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/69464277@N00/2489522472/"title="Trusted Tours Travel Photos" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Trusted Tours Travel Photos

Bullfights. Cancun’s Spanish heritage is felt in the language, customs, and handicrafts prevalent in the area. One of these customs is bullfights, the dramatic contest between “el toro” and the team of matadors. Cancun has its own small bullring in the downtown area, where bullfights are held every Wednesday afternoon. The contests are accompanied by folk singing and dancing.
Baltimore, Maryland, just north of Washington DC along the Chesapeake Bay, is filled with interesting and historic sites for visitors of all ages. Below are just a few of the “must-sees” in the “Charm City”:

The National Aquarium. The National Aquarium, located at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, opened in 1981, one of the first buildings completed in that renewal project. Today, the site is the most popular attraction in Baltimore. The two-building complex houses more than 16,000 specimens of 660 aquatic species. Hightlights include the dolphin display, the rooftop rain forest, and the multi-story shark tank. The National Aquarium is open daily expect for major holidays. Discounts are offered for children 3-11 and those age 60 and older.

Fort McHenry. This star-shaped fort along the Chesapeake Bay is best known for its role in the War of 1812 when it successfully defended Baltimore Harbor from British attack. During this battle, the composer Francis Scott Key penned the song there that would become the national anthem of the United States, “The Star Spangled Banner.” Today, the fort is administered by the National Park Service and open to visitors daily from 9am to 5pm, except for Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. The is a modest entrance fee and children under 15 years old are free.

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. If you can’t find something to interest you along downtown Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, you aren’t really trying. The redeveloped 18th century seaport is home to shopping, restaurants, historic ships to visit, and a half-dozen museums and attractions, including the National Aquarium (mentioned above) and the Maryland Science Center. You can also take a water taxi from there to Ft. McHenry and take a short stroll to Camden Yards, the home of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team.

Nashville, the capital of Tennessee, is known for its museums, country music, and southern hospitality. It’s also home to a number of striking buildings and landmarks, making it an interesting city to explore. Below are just a few:

Ryman Auditorium, The 2362-seat auditorium, built in 1892, is best known as the home of the “Grand Ole Opry” from 1943 to 1974 and of country music shows, such as “The Johnny Cash Show.” Virtually all late-20th century country music stars played the Ryman. The venue, now a National Historic Landmark, still hosts the Opry during the winter months as well as a full schedule of concerts and events.

Parthenon, Located in Nashville’s Centennial Park, just west of downtown, is a full replica of Parthenon in Athens. The classic Greek structure was built as a temporary exhibit hall for the city’s Centennial Exposition in 1897 and later fortified as a permanent building. Today, Nashville’s Parthenon is home to an art museum, the highlight of which is a statue of the goddess Athena, said to be the largest indoor statue in the Western world.

The Hermitage, Nashville was home to the United States’ seventh president, Andrew Jackson. Jackson’s estate, The Hermitage, was his home periodically from 1804 to 1845. Today, the property, located 12 miles from downtown Nashville, is a National Historic Landmark and visitors can tour the two-story, eight-room, red brick home as well as the gardens and grounds. Jackson and his wife, Rachel are also buried on the property. It is the fourth most visited presidential residence in the United States (after the White House, Mt. Vernon, and Monticello).

When planning your itinerary for a London trip the first two places you think of are the “Changing of the Guards” and “Buckingham Palace.” Both, of course, you must see. However, there is so much more to see, learn and enjoy about London. Did you know about the ravens that live at the Tower of London. It’s believed that the monarchy will fall if they ever leave. Now, a royal decree protects these birds. Or, do you know who “Big Ben” was named after?

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/72631741@N00/358447391/"title="Buckingham Palace Guards" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">
Buckingham Palace Guards

Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace is a daily occurrence at 11:30 am during the summer months. Thereafter, it takes place every other day for the rest of the year. This 45 minute ceremony of the Foot Guards involve seven separate regimens. Each having minor, but distinct differences. What you may not know about these guards is that they are not just “for show.“ They are serving soldiers that carry out their duties throughout the world. These guards are trained as some of the most elite of all the British Army. While planning your trip, check the schedule for this event. As part of this event, visit The Guards Museum to learn about the history and different guard regimens.<a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/"title="Attribution License" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> <a href="http://www.photodropper.com/photos/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/72631741@N00/358447391/"title="roblisameehan" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">roblisameehan

The state rooms are open to the public in August and September. During this time the Queen resides at one of her many country estates. You will see royal collections and lavish furniture. You may be offered site of the ballroom set for a state banquet or the Queen’s Gallery with original paintings by Rembrandt, Canaletto and Ruben.

Refreshments of drinks and ice cream are offered for purchase in the garden area. Well behaved children are allowed in the palace. However, strollers and baby buggies are not allowed. So if you have very small children go prepared to carry them or at the very least hold on to them. No cell phones in the palace, but they are permitted in the garden.<a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/"title="Attribution-ShareAlike License" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> <a href="http://www.photodropper.com/photos/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/33252379@N00/2471551243/"title="llamnudds" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">llamnudds

Tower of London is where the spectacular crown jewels have been housed since the 14th century. When your tour the tower you will see the Cullinan I. This is the largest cut diamond in the world and sits atop the Queen’s scepter. While visiting you will see the Yeoman Warders or Beefeaters as they are sometimes called. They will be your tour guides, answering all your questions. Don’t be surprised by the ravens, they live there.

The tower was actually once a prison with executions held on the grounds which included two of Henry the VIII’s wives, Ann Boleyn and Catharine Howard. Lovely thought. Sir Walter Raleigh wrote “The History of the World” while he was a prisoner there. The tour will take between two and three hours. They are offered November through February, daily (except December 24, 25, 26 and January 1).<a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/2.0/"title="Attribution-NoDerivs License" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> <a href="http://www.photodropper.com/photos/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/88841303@N00/178381268/"title="Rob Inh00d" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Rob Inh00d

Big Ben is as much a part of London as any of it’s other attractions. In 1857 the original bell cracked. The current 316 foot tower holds the clock and bell. It is thought to have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was the first Commissioner of Works and known as “Big Ben” in the House of Commons. Big Ben is part of Westminster Palace. Tours can be arranged to climb the tower through members of parliament.<a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/"title="Attribution License" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> <a href="http://www.photodropper.com/photos/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/20826826@N00/2128059001/"title="hashmil" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">hashmil

Natural History Museum is a way of experiencing all of life (as we know it) through all the ages. The skeletons of dinosaurs and a blue whale will send a shiver down your back. It’s really hard to realize what “life size” means until you see it. Try out the exhibit “The Power Within” to feel what an earth quake would feel like.

Children of all ages will love the Gallery Characters. Historical actors wander the museum telling their story to guests. Sir Hans Sloan created chocolate. He will introduce himself and tell you his story of chocolate. Or, you may be greeted by Mary Anning who will tell you her story as fossil collector and paleontologist. She may very well tell you of her famous discovery of an ichthyosaur (a Mesozoic age reptile) at the age of 15. It is open daily throughout the year except for December 25 and 26. Entry is free except for special exhibits, wow.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/60754591@N00/2204173423/"title="Palace of Westminster" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">
The House of Parliament otherwise known as the Palace of Westminster

The House of Parliament (proper name is Palace of Westminster) was a former home to kings. It was originally built for “Edward the Confessor” in the eleventh century. The building is enormous with 1,200 rooms and 100 stairways. During parliament’s summer recess, the building is open for tours daily except Sundays and Bank Holidays. Your guide will give you a British constitution overview, which has been in existence since 1300. Portraits of monarchs grace the walls as well as two battles of the Napoleonic War.

Camden Market is one of London’s famous street markets. The shops and stalls with funky clothes and one-of-a-kind gifts draw 100,000 visitors each weekend. There are restaurants and even a hopping night life at the Camden pubs. You will need cash for this market, but don’t carry more than you plan on spending. Be wary, the pickpockets you read about in Charles Dickens books are still around. For fun, get your palm read.

The tallest Ferris wheel in the world has played the role of scenery to many popular movies and TV programs. It carries 32 air conditioned capsules, each holding 25 people. It takes 30 minutes to make a complete rotation and does not stop to take on passengers unless they are handicapped. It moves so slowly that those without disabilities can walk right on and off.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28648431@N00/146945513/"title="18 hole - bliss" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">

Warming the area with 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and winter temperatures averaging 68 degrees, it is no surprise that the Fort Lauderdale area is one of the best year-round vacation spots in the U.S. Even though August and September can pour the heaviest rains of the season, the rest of the year offers a perfect golf climate. It’s great when everyone in your vacation party enjoy the same activities, but even if you are the only golf enthusiast, Fort Lauderdale offers shopping, great dining, water sports and more. There is no question everyone will find something in this city to make it a great trip.

Coral Ridge Country Club started as the Forananda Golf Course, however, constructions was halted in 1929 when the stock market crashed. In 1954 Robert Trent Jones, renowned golf course designer, molded the partially built course to his specifications. His vision was for a truly challenging, championship course with a grander completion than the golf course and shop he opened with. Eventually the course came to include a clubhouse, tennis courts and swimming pool. This 18-hole course does require membership which means you’ll need to stop by the clubhouse for a guest pass. The course is rated difficult, just as Mr. Jones planned. It’s a par 72 course with 7095 yards and a 134 slope and a 74.1 course rating.

Lauderhill Golf Course, managed by Paula Tucker, opened in 1968. This public course is a 9-hole, par 3. It’s designed to provide a fun golf game for any skill level with 1200 yards of play. Green fees are extremely reasonable at $15.

Deer Creek Golf is and 18-hole championship course features 7,050 of golf play. Designed by Bill Watts and Arthur Hill, it is a new course just built in 2005. This public course is kept in tip-top shape and is rated with a complete 5 stars for maintenance by players with very high scores in all other areas. The fairways have been over seeded to obtain the best possible play. It’s just 10 minutes from Fort Lauderdale and 30 minutes to the airport. Play on Bermuda grass for a par 72, slope of 133 and rated 75. The real bargain are their twilight fees of $50 at this golf only course.

Hillcrest Golf and Country Club spans 6,903 yards with a par 72. Conveniently located, it’s just minutes away from I-95. The 18-hole championship course will surprise you with a tough finishing hole. You may find it a bit more expensive than some of the other public courses in the area at $99 on weekends. It holds a rating of 73 and slope of 129 but has a 25 tee driving range. It has more bunkers, 100, than any other Fort Lauderdale area golf course which will add some fun for the experienced golfer, while giving a bit of challenge to the beginner. After your morning round of golf, stop by the Island Green Bar and Grill for lunch. It has a great view overlooking the 18th hole while taking a peek at the game on their 42 inch plasma.

Arrowhead Golf Club is located in Davie, just 10 minutes to Fort Lauderdale. This Bill Watts designed course opened in 1969. The public course offers very reasonable summer rates at $34 for weekends, $26 during the week. Their twilight fees are $18 every summer day. There is 6,311 yards of green on this 18-hole course. It has a rating of 71, slope of 113 and a par 71 on full Bermuda greens. Enjoy their cocktail bar for a cold one after your game.

The Diplomat Golf Resort and Spa at beautiful Hallandale Beach. The newer public course, designed by Joseph L. Lee, opened in 2000. Check in to your room and feel like your in a luxury hotel with all the amenities especially their special spa. This is the perfect location for a couple when only one enjoys golfing as the other can enjoy a day at the spa. The 18-hole, par 72 course has a slope rating of 136, all on Bermuda. It is player rated highest in amenities, maintenance and difficulty with scenery and value also very high.

Pembroke Lakes Golf Course offers 6,555 yards of Bermuda greens. Designed by Howard Watson and opened in 2007, this new 18-hole course is a par 72, rated 71.1 and has a slope of 126. If you stop in for a round on a weekday morning, finish with lunch at their buffet. All is reasonably priced at Pembroke Lakes and you’ll receive great service on top. If Sunday is your golfing day, try their buffet after a round of golf. It goes until 2 pm.

The Club at Emerald Hills has been chosen as one of the U.S. Open sites, U.S. Amateur sites and U.S. Public Link qualifiers. This challenging course promises meticulously manicured greens on their 7,717 yard course. They’ve been voted “One of the Nations Top Golf Clubs” and “Excellent” by players in “America’s Top Golf Courses” in an ESPN survey. This 1969 course was designed by Bruce Devlin. Its rating is 74.6 with a slope of 142. After a round of golf enjoy a meal at their Restaurant Grille, open 11 am to 3 pm., lounge open until dusk. The excellent chefs are happy to book and cater an event for you in their banquet facility.

Las Vegas may have a reputation of being a place where money flows freely, but the city actually offers a large number of things to see and do without spending a dime. Below are just a few free ideas:

Watch the free casino shows. Most of the major casinos offer some sort of entertainment for free. This being Vegas, many of these are quite spectacular. There’s the Bellagio Fountains, probably the most popular free attraction in Las Vegas. This extravaganza features 1200 nozzles and 4500 lights as the music “dances” to music as it shoots 240 feet in the air. The Rio features a Carnivale parade in their Masquerade shopping village with larger-than-life characters high above the crowd. There are live circus acts at Circus Circus, and the huge volcano in front of the Mirage erupts every hour to the delight of spectators.

Experience “Old Las Vegas.” Downtown Las Vegas, centered around Fremont Street has its own free attractions. Each hour from dusk until midnight, the four-block pedestrian district of Fremont Street erupts in a combination of sound, light, and motion. Just around the corner is Las Vegas’ neon museum, which houses a collection of retired neon signs, such as the original lamp from the Aladdin Hotel. The self-guided tour is free.

Go Shopping. Shopping in Las Vegas is different from any other place in the world. Where else can you strolls the streets of Paris, visit ancient Egypt, and barter for goods in New York City–all within a one-block radius? The merchants of Las Vegas strive to intice casino winners to spend their bounty in Vegas and thus offer a dazzling array of goods, from art work to designer clothing to fun Vegas kitsch. Buying can be expensive, but looking is free.

Sample Chocolates. Just outside of Las Vegas is the Ethel M Chocolate factory. This luxury candy manufacturer is located in Henderson, just 15 minutes from the Strip and offers self-guided tours daily from 830am to 7pm. Of course, each tour ends with a few samples.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/20801313@N00/319685147/"title="Golden Gate Sunset" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">

San Francisco is a delightful place to visit in September and October. The weather is mild and often sunny. The summer tourists have returned home, and the area markets and restaurants are well-stocked with the bounty of the fall produce and wine harvest. The city also offers a number of beautiful parks where you can enjoy the weather and the many facets of this fascinating city. Below are just a few of my favorites:

Golden Gate Park. An discussion of San Francisco parks has to start with Golden Gate Park. This rectangular, 1017-acre park is located in the heart of the city, just north of Haight-Ashbury. Opened in the 1870s, Golden Gate Park is larger even than New York’s Central Park. There are a myriad of activities inside the park. You can marvel at the twin windmills, gifts from Queen Wilhemina of Holland, explore the Japanese Tea Garden, or visit the several museums located within Golden Gate Park. There’s even a small herd of buffalo. Admission is free, although some of the attractions within carry a fee.
