Your digestive system breaks down food that you eat and uses the nutrients in the food to build, repair and grow your body. Many organs and parts of your body are part of your digestive system. Each part in the digestive system helps to break food down into smaller pieces. The first part of digestion is when your mouth chews food to break it into smaller bits. The salvia in your mouth also helps with digestion. It makes the food easier to chew and the chemicals in saliva start to break down the food. Your esophagus moves the food pieces to your stomach. The stomach muscles grind the food and break down everything you eat. Next your small intestine continues to digest the food and pulls out all the nutrients from the food. Then your large intestine removes water from the remaining waste.
